Opis:
Despite several technical advances over the last decade, CNC controlled manufacturing still bases upon outdated paradigms: manufacturing data are generated and transferred along a heterogeneous and divided CAD/CAM/CNC data chain. The role of the NC controller is limited to the execution of tool paths generated beforehand and the possibility of online tool path adaptation is not planned in legacy NC controllers. In contrast, practical observations make this legacy approach quite inappropriate in an industrial framework. Significant geometrical variability is sometimes observed both prior and after milling in parts that belong to the same batch. In that context, the integration of online tool path adaptation strategies appears to be essential. In this paper, a methodology for correcting the tool path in real-time thanks to measurements provided by a laser scanner moving with the tool is introduced. The resulting local information is used to approximate the workpiece exact geometry by using a POD (Prosper Orthogonal Decomposition) snapshot technique and to adjust the path in accordance. This method has the great advantage of taking into consideration geometrical features such as curvature, twist but also additional parameters whose impact on the tool path is significant (unexpected initial setup of the part for example). This method has been implemented on the advanced CNC programming platform of the laboratory, which hosts in particular a high speed machining centre equipped with an open NC controller.

Opis:
Additive Manufacturing (AM) for metal part can be divided into two different types: The powder technology and the wire technology. Usually, powder is adapted for fine components and small parts whereas wire is used for structural components and large scale part. One of the main benefits of AM is to simplify assemblies by reducing the number of components and to provide a large freedom of design. A standard AM system consists of a combination of three blocks: a motion system, a heat source and a feedstock. For Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), the heat source is a welding generator and the feedstock is a wire. The motion system generally used is a 6 axis robot or a CNC machine. This paper aims to propose a methodology to generate 5 axis toolpaths for WAAM and highlight the main parameters which selection is a key issue to resolve. The goal is to compare 3 axis and 5 axis toolpaths on part accuracy, depending the clearance angle of the part.

Opis:
The current language for CNC programming is G-code which dates from the beginning of the eighties with the norm ISO 6983. With the new technologies, G-code becomes obsolete. It presents drawbacks that create a rupture in the numerical chain at the manufacturing step. A new standard, Step_NC, aims to overtake these lacks. A Step_NC file includes all the information for manufacturing, as geometry description of the entities, workplan, machining strategies, tools, etc. For rough pocket milling, the ISO norms propose different kind of classical strategies as bidirectional, parallel or spiral contour, etc. This paper describes a new way of toolpath programming by the repetition of a pattern all along a guide curve. It presents several advantages as building fastness and easiness. The integration of pattern strategies in Step_NC standard is an other step for the development of these strategies but also for the enrichment of Step_NC possibilities. A complete Step_NC numerical chain was built, integrating these pattern strategies. The implementation of this approach of building pattern strategies was made by the development of tools for the complete manufacturing cycle, from the CAD file to the machined part. Several application cases were experimented on machine tool to validate this approach and the efficiency of the developed tools.

Opis:
Demand of high speed production not only increases the complexity of today's CNC process, but also increases the risks and possibility of collision because of the difference between real (machining) and virtual scenes (CAD/CAM process). Idea here is to make this process more intelligent by processing image taken from the real or virtual machine scenes. Identify objects (already known in the CAD database), obtain safe and efficient trajectories that will modify the previous known trajectories from the CAM systems and will be used finally in real machining environments. This work more focuses to improve trajectory generation, collision avoidance and communication in CAD/CAM systems by image processing technique. Safe and Efficient Trajectory (SET) algorithm for point trajectory is discussed along with its extended version for object trajectory known as Rectangular Enveloped object Safe and Efficient Trajectory (RESET) algorithm that will perfectly generate safe un-functional trajectories [3] for multi-axis machine tool envelop. Meanwhile scene objects are detected and identified by image processing tool while trajectory and setup is optimized and improved accordingly in order to avoid collision. This generated trajectory can be used for setup correction before and after production or for "real times/online" production. Finally work has been validated through real and virtual machine scene images.

Opis:
Marine propellers are complex surfaces that are usually machined with a perfect roughness in order not to disturb the theoretical flow. Because this requirement is penalizing from a manufacturing point of view, the global objective of the study is to propose an approach in which the machining parameters are linked to functional properties of the blade in order to remove the polishing phase. To reach this objective, hydrodynamic data are used: streak lines, that are computed during the propeller design phase, characterize the fluid behavior at the close vicinity of the blade. Those lines, which are theoretically continuous at the leading edge, turn out to be discontinuous, due to the computing method. To be consistent with the fluid behavior as much as possible, the idea presented in the paper is to compose a continuous trajectory, especially at the leading edge, to mill the surface. Thus, an algorithm is developed to plan tool paths which are smoothed at leading edge using Bezier curves. Moreover, this algorithm allows to quantify the cusp height at the leading edge to avoid a drop in performance using criteria linked to the dynamical behavior of a five axis machine tool. In this work, a strategy is developed and enables multiaxial milling of a blade surface by using geometric and hydrodynamic data and by respecting the associated constraints.

programming CAD/CAM/CNC data interoperability
Opis:
Despite substantial improvements CNC manufacturing is still based on dated practices and habits. This is mostly due to the use of ISO 6983 standard (G-codes) combined with vendor specific formats to exchange CAD/CAM/ CNC information. The manufacturing sector is consequently made of a collection of disconnected elements that are difficult to make communicate together. On the contrary STEP-NC approach offers many opportunities to overtake the current situation and rethink CAD/CAM/CNC numerical chains. However, the actual integration of STEP-NC in industrial concerns is quite limited. It is essential to couple this innovative approach with existing equipments. This paper shows how STEP-NC can be an efficient way to reconcile today's interoperability and efficiency demands by introducing the association of two manufacturing platforms: SPAIM, developed at IRCCyN (France), and which controls current industrial machine tools directly from STEP-NC files and IIMP from the University of Auckland (New Zealand), which realizes data portability between heterogeneous proprietary formats, process interoperability. As a result, both approaches lead to improved supervision and integration of the machining systems.

Opis:
The context of this paper implies disciplines of mechanical design, machining and hydrodynamics behaviours applied to propellers. Performances of propellers are linked with their shape and their surface texture. To optimise hydrodynamics behaviours, it is demonstrated in this paper that required polishing operation is not essential. To study the influence of an predefined surface texture on the performances of a three-dimensional foil, a comparative analysis is conducted. The presented methodology allows the definition of tool paths, according to the desired surface texture and upstream flow. Three foils are machined, and their performances are compared to each other: the first, considered as the reference, has a surface roughness like mirror, the second features machined peaks parallel to the upstream flow and the third has machined peaks following streamlines obtained by Computational Fluid Dynamics for operating conditions. The validation of this method is experimental: on the one hand by the manufacturing of foils following pre-established trajectories, and on the other hand by the functional test in hydrodynamic tunnel. This paper presents the methodology steps, and the hydrodynamic behaviours that the three different foils show. In a first approach, the different surface textures do not influence the lift coefficient but strongly influence the drag coefficient of a foil. Furthermore several hypotheses educed from the observed tendencies are discussed.

Opis:
Additive manufacturing (AM) is a process that joins similar or dissimilar materials into application-oriented objects in a wide range of sizes and shapes. This article presents an overview of two additive manufacturing techniques; namely Laser metal deposition (LMD) and Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). In LMD, metallic powders are contained in one or more chambers, which are then channelled through deposition nozzles. A laser heats the particles to produce metallic beads, which are deposited in layers with the aid of an in-built motion system. In WAAM, a high voltage electric arc functions as the heat source, which helps with ensuring deposition of materials, while materials in wire form are used for the feedstock. This article highlights some of the strengths and challenges that are offered by both processes. As part of the authors’ original research work, Ti-6Al-4V, Stainless steel 316L and Al-12Si were prepared using LMD, while the WAAM technique was used to prepare two Al alloys; Al-5356 and CuAl8Ni2. Microstructural analysis will focus on similarity and differences in grains that are formed in layers. This article will also offer an overall comparison on how these samples compare with other materials that have been prepared using LMD and WAAM.
