Opis:
Bivalves, oysters, mussels, and clams are important constituents of riverine and estuarine ecosystems. Their shells and soft tissues provide information on the environments in which they live. Since they are filter feeders, they also are factors in improving water quality through removal of particulate matter from the water column. Finally, they are a valuable food source that has substantial economic value. Hence, characterization of shells and soft tissues is useful for improved understanding of these factors. Here, we used X-ray microprobes and computed microtomography facilities at the Brookhaven National Synchrotron Light Source to investigate elemental distributions in bivalves taken from locations around New York, Washington, DC, and New Orleans, LA. The results form the initial basis for compilation of a database of relevant parameters that can serve for tracking environmental changes and for assessing toxicity of particular metals. The work was enabled by active collaboration with students from the several regions, community groups, and research scientists. The collaboration was facilitated through use of web conferencing between Brookhaven National Laboratory and the varied locations.

Opis:
Without accurate analysis, it is difficult to identify training needs and develop the content of training programs required for preventing aviation accidents. The human factors analysis and classification system (HFACS) is based on Reason's system-wide model of human error. In this study, 523 accidents from the Republic of China Air Force were analyzed in which 1762 human errors were categorized. The results of the analysis showed that errors of judgment and poor decision-making were commonly reported amongst pilots. As a result, it was concluded that there was a need for military pilots to be trained specifically in making decisions in tactical environments. However, application of HFACS also allowed the identification of systemic training deficiencies within the organization further contributing to the accidents observed.

Opis:
Although recent discoveries from Lower Cretaceous sediments in northeastern China have greatly improved our understanding of the initial stages of avian diversification in eastern Asia, the early evolution of Aves elsewhere on the continent remains poorly understood. In 2004, a collaborative field effort directed by personnel from the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences and Carnegie Museum of Natural History recovered multiple partial to nearly complete avian skeletons from outcrops of the Lower Cretaceous Xiagou Formation exposed in the Changma Basin of northwestern Gansu Province, China. Here we describe a thrush−sized partial skeleton comprised of a fragmentary pelvic girdle and largely complete hind limbs. A phylogenetic analysis of 20 avian ingroup taxa and 169 anatomical characters places the specimen in Enantiornithes, and within that clade, in Euenantiornithes. When coupled with additional recent discoveries from the Changma Basin, the new skeleton improves our understanding of early avian evolution and diversification in central Asia.

Opis:
Finely−bedded lacustrine deposits of the Aptian (Lower Cretaceous) Xiagou Formation exposed in the Changma Basin of Gansu Province, northwestern China, have yielded numerous fossil vertebrate remains, including approximately 100 avian specimens. Though the majority of these birds appear referable to the ornithuromorph Gansus yumenensis, a number of enantiornithine fossils have also been recovered. Here we report on a specimen consisting of a complete, three−dimensionally preserved sternum, furcula, and sternal ribs that represents a second ornithuromorph taxon from the Xiagou Formation at Changma. The fossil exhibits morphologies that distinguish it from all previously−known Xiagou birds and demonstrate that it represents a derived non−ornithurine member of Ornithuromorpha. Though it is morphologically distinct from the equivalent elements of all other described ornithuromorphs, the material is too incomplete to justify the erection of a new taxon. Nonetheless, it increases the taxonomic diversity of the Xiagou avifauna, thereby expanding our knowledge of Early Cretaceous avian diversity and evolution.

Opis:
To reduce human casualties associated with explosive ordnance disposal, a wide range of protective wear has been designed to shield against the blast effects of improvised explosive devices and munitions. In this study, 4 commercially available bomb suits, representing a range of materials and armor masses, were evaluated against 0.227 and 0.567 kg of spherical C-4 explosives to determine the level of protection offered to the head, neck, and thorax. A Hybrid III dummy, an instrumented human surrogate [1], was tested with and without protection from the 4 commercially available bomb suits. 20 tests with the dummy torso mounted to simulate a kneeling position were performed to confirm repeatability and robustness of the dummies, as well as to evaluate the 4 suits. Correlations between injury risk assessments based on past human or animal injury model data and various parameters such as bomb suit mass, projected area, and dummy coverage area were drawn.

Opis:
The power of photocurrent spectroscopy to study the electronic properties of InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots is described. From comparison of results from different samples it is shown that photocurrent provides a direct means to measure absorption spectra of quantum dots. Studies in high electric field enable the electron-hole vertical alignment to be determined. Most surprisingly this is found to be opposite to that predicted by all recent predictions. Comparison with theory shows that this can only be explained if the dots contain significant amounts of gallium, and have a severely truncated shape. The nature of the ground and excited state transitions, carrier escape mechanisms from dots, in-plane wave function anisotropies and the modal gain of a quantum dot laser are determined.
