    [„I will focus on the monstrosity of phenomena”]. On the poetic imagination of Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska. This article examines a selection of Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska’s poems inspired by the Baroque imagination. In her last volume of poetry published by the interwar poet before the Second World War (Szkicownik poetycki) she pays tribute to the late Baroque poet, Józef Baka. Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska analyses the imagery, mood and language of his work, which encourages the reader to look at the sources of her poetic outlook. From the very beginning of her poetic development, Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska was fascinated by the natural world, both its beauty and ugliness, the latter involving the processes of decay, decomposition and death in their various forms. The analysed poems show a sense of the duality of the world, awe, and absurdity of existence, reflect in the complexity of all phenomena. This attitude is built on the base of the original poetic technique of Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska, and at the same time demonstrates associations with the Baroque poetry.

    Przedmiotem uwagi w artykule jest twórczość wybranych pisarzy, którzy w tekstach poetyckich manifestują związki z określonym miejscem – Częstochową i jej okolicami, gdzie spędzili wczesne lata życia lub osiedlili się tu w wieku dojrzałym. Na przykładzie utworów poetyckich wybranych twórców prześledzono, w jaki sposób miejsce ważne dla twórcy kształtuje jego światopogląd, sferę wartości, wyobraźnię. Użyta w tytule szkicu formuła obejmuje tu dokonania, które wykraczają poza wąsko rozumiany regionalizm; utrwalają ślady miejsc, a jednocześnie nadają im głębsze znaczenia.
    The article is dedicated to the works of selected writers who manifest their relations with a particular place – Częstochowa and its environs in their poetic texts This are the places where they spent the early years of their lives or settled down in as adults. Selected poetic works show how a place important for an author shapes his or her view on life, the sphere of values and imagination. The wording used in the title encompasses the achievements that go beyond the narrowly understood regionalism; they preserve the traces of places and at the same time give them deeper meanings.

    The paper is dedicated to Franz Kafka’s letters written to the women important in his life – Milena Jesenská and Felice Bauer. The letters to Milena, published earlier (1952, Polish translation 1959) apply to the period 1919–1922, the letters to Felice date back to the years 1912–1917 and were published later (1969, Polish translation 1976). Kafka’s letters are treated by the author mainly as a record of the writer’s personal experience, as a reflection of his complex personality, his indecision in the life matters, his being scared of life, and also as a record of his concerns related to his creative work. This kind of confessions made by Kafka in his letters to women indicate an area of intimacy. In addition, the published correspondence constitutes an important factor of the reception and leads to a better understanding of the life and works of the writer.
    Im Zentrum des Aufsatzes stehen Franz Kafkas Briefe an Milena Jesenská und Felice Bauer, zwei Frauen, die ihm viel bedeuteten. Die als erstes veröffentlichten Briefe an Milena (1952, polnische Übertragung 1959) betreffen den Zeitraum 1919–1922, die Briefe an Felice aus den Jahren 1912–1917 wurden später publiziert (1969, polnische Übertragung 1976). Die Briefe Kafkas werden hier hauptsächlich als Ausdruck persönlicher Erlebnisse des Dichters betrachtet, als Abbild seiner komplizierten Persönlichkeit, seiner Lebensfremdheit und eines starken Empfindens der Grausamkeit des Lebens, aber auch als Aufzeichnung schöp-ferischer Verwirrungen. Derartige Geständnisse in den an Frauen gerichteten Briefen erzeugen das Bild der Intimität, darüber hinaus ist der im Druck erschienene Briefwechsel ein wichtiger Faktor der Rezeption und führt zur besseren Erkenntnis des Lebens und der Quel-len von Kafkas Werk.
    Przedmiotem rozważań w artykule są listy Franza Kafki do kobiet ważnych w jego życiu – Mileny Jesenskiej i Felicji Bauer. Listy do Mileny, opublikowane wcześniej (1952, polski przekład 1959), dotyczą okresu 1919–1922, listy do Felicji z czasu wcześniej-szego, z lat 1912–1917, opublikowano później (1969, polski przekład 1976). Listy Kafki traktowane są w artykule głównie jako zapis przeżyć osobistych pisarza, jako obraz jego złożonej osobowości, niezdecydowania w życiowych sprawach, przerażenia życiem, a także jako zapis jego rozterek związanych z pracą twórczą. Tego rodzaju wyznania Kafki w listach do kobiet wyznaczają obszar intymności. Ponadto ogłoszona drukiem korespondencja stanowi ważny czynnik recepcji i prowadzi do lepszego poznania życia i źródeł twórczości pisarza.

    Opis:
    The article deals with the reception of Austrian literature – as it has been presented in “Literatura na Świecie” – since the magazine was founded in 1971. The main goal has been to analyze the ways in which the magazine has contributed to the spread of literature among Polish readers. Because of the breadth of the topic, the article focuses on specific problems in: the representativeness of the works printed or excerpted, the portrayal of Austrian writers, the reviews of texts, critical reviews, translations, and discussions regarding translations. The analysis indicates that the magazine has contributed to the expansion of knowledge concerning Austrian literature and its main representatives, (Rainer Maria Rilke, Robert Musil, Elias Canetti, Franz Kafka, Georg Trakl, Paul Celan, Ilse Aichinger, Elfriede. Jelinek and others , and others), their specificity, along with the historical and cultural conditions of the literature and its proponents.
    In diesem Beitrag wird die Rezeption der österreichischen Literatur in der Zeitschrift „Literatura na Świecie” vom Beginn ihres Bestehens im Jahr 1971 vorgestellt. Die hauptsächliche Aufgabe bestand darin, dem polnischen Leser die österreichische Literatur näherzubringen. Im Hinblick auf den überaus großen Umfang des Themas wurde der Zugang anhand von Problemfeldern gewählt. Im Zentrum der Betrachtung finden sich Fragen wie z.B. die nach dem repräsentativen Charakter gedruckter Werke oder Fragmente, nach den Lebensläufen von österreichischen Schriftstellern, Werkbesprechungen, Rezensionen, Übersetzungen und damit verbundene Diskussionen. Im Lichte dieser Unternehmungen lässt sich feststellen, dass die Zeitschrift zur Verbreitung des Wissens über die österreichische Literatur und ihre Hauptvertreter (R.M. Rilke, R. Musil, E. Canetti, F. Kafka, G. Trakl, P. Celan, I. Aichinger, E. Jelinek und andere) sowie über ihre Eigenheiten und ihr historisches und kulturelles Umfeld maßgeblich beigetragen hat.
    W artykule przedstawiona została recepcja literatury austriackiej na łamach czasopisma „Literatura na Świecie” od początku jego istnienia (1971). Głównym celem było ukazanie sposobów przybliżania tej literatury polskiemu czytelnikowi. Ze względu na dużą rozpiętość tematu zastosowano ujęcie problemowe, w centrum uwagi znalazły się takie kwestie, jak: reprezentatywność drukowanych utworów (lub ich fragmentów), sylwetki pisarzy austriackich, omówienia utworów, recenzje, działalność przekładowa i związane z nią dyskusje. W świetle tych poczynań można stwierdzić, że pismo przyczyniło się do poszerzenia wiedzy o literaturze austriackiej, jej głównych przedstawicielach (R.M. Rilke, R. Musil, E. Canetti, F. Kafka, G. Trakl, P. Celan, I. Aichinger, E. Jelinek i in.), specyfice, uwarunkowaniach historycznych i kulturowych.

    The article is devoted to Maria Czerkawska’s poetry written during interwar period. Nature is the main subject of her poems. It is shown in a detailed and precise way. The good example is her book entitled Zielony cień  (1928) and subsequent volumes. Zielony cień  contains portraits of plants. Literary critics noticed several important features of these poems: versatility of observation, accuracy and concreteness of description. The same characteristics can also be observed in works of Skamander group of poets. Article focuses on the following topics: suffering observed in nature and continuous process of dying. Czerkawska’s poems tell us about transience, absurdity, horror and drama of existence. It is caused by close relation between the lyric subject and the nature. Czerkawska is trying to discover nature’s secrets. These tendencies are also present in poems of Bolesław Leśmian, Leopold Staff and Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska.

    Tekst dotyczy Haliny Poświatowskiej (1935–1967), autorki kilku zbiorów poetyckich, opowieści autobiograficznej, dwóch opowiadań, dramatów (w tym nieukończonych). Jej poezja od początku (debiut książkowy w 1958 roku) budziła uwagę czytelników i badaczy, komentowana była w artykułach i książkach, a postać przedwcześnie zmarłej poetki utrwalona została w wielu wspomnieniach. Moim celem jest przedstawienie złożonej osobowości Poświatowskiej poprzez konfrontowanie różnych wspomnień i listów, a także ukazanie, jak pewne doświadczenia życiowe, wydarzenia, przeżycia (głównie związane z chorobą serca) stawały się materiałem literackim. Stąd przydatnym narzędziem w analizie wierszy Poświatowskiej jest autobiografizm. W artykule korzystam z wierszy i listów poetki, wspomnień rodziny i przyjaciół.
    The text concerns Halina Poświatowska (1935–1967), the author of several poetry collections, an autobiographical story, two short stories and dramas (including the unfinished ones). From the very beginning, her poetry (her book debut in 1958) aroused the attention of the readers and researchers and was commented on in numerous articles and books, and the figure of the prematurely deceased poet was recorded in many memoirs. My aim is to present a complex personality of Poświatowska, by confronting various memories and letters, as well as to show how certain life experiences, events and emotions (mainly related to her heart disease) became a literary material. Hence, autobiographism is a useful tool in the analysis of Poświatowska’s poems. In this article, I make use of the poet’s verses and letters, as well as the memories of her family and friends.
