The moment a notion becomes fashionable its meaning becomes unclear. This also concerns the notion of `naturalism'. After reminding briefly of the evolution of the notion, some of the sources are discussed of contemporary naturalistic tendencies in philosophy of science and current interpretations of scientific theories. One of the characteristic features of contemporary naturalism is a strong tendency to monistic interpretations. This seems to be in drastic opposition to metaphysical and theological dualism connected with the Christian view of the world. But does this view really force this kind of dualism on it followers? The article presents various contemporary views of this problem with a particular stress on the discussion that has been going on around the question of “God's action in the world”. During these polemics the notions of bottom-up causality and top-down causality have been broadly discussed. The author of the article suggests a certain philosophical hypothesis that allows overcoming the controversy between monism and dualism making by that very fact contemporary naturalistic tendencies not objectionable for followers of the Christian view of the world.

In the previous paper (Filozofia Nauki No 3-4, 1994, pp. 7-17) we have shown how the initial and final singularities in the closed Friedman world model can be analysed in terms of the structured spaces in spite of the fact that these singularities constitute the single point in the b-boundary of space-time. In the present paper we generalize our approach by using methods of noncommutative geometry. We construct a noncommutative algebra in terms of which geometry of space-time with singularities can be developed. This algebra admits a representation in the space of operators on a Hilbert space, and the initial and final singularities in the closed Friedman model are given by its two distinct representations. The striking feature of this approach is its analogy with the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics.

Physics is inseparably connected with western philosophy. From the seventieth century, physics began to play the role similar to that of ontology. Moreover, many notions and problems moved from philosophy to physics. That way it came into being something that is now called „philosophy in physics”. It means that some traditional philosophical questions, like for example the problem of individualization, emerge in physics in a new, exact and mathematical form. Therefore, physics will in the future become gradually philosophy.

At least since Aristotle, logic was considered to be a tool (organon) in the service of philosophy. It was not until the 19th century that logic started to create its own field of research and be ready for unexpected applications. However, it is category theory that has drastically changed the entire perspective: in this theory logic is no longer a tool that can be applied to a given structure (be it a mathematical model or a physical theory), but rather it is its part or an aspect. Moreover, a given category itself determines the kind of logic that corresponds to its inner structure. The paper briefly recalls those aspects of category theory which are relevant to this set of problems and discusses the consequences of this new approach for philosophy of mathematics and philosophy of physics. Category theory also sheds light on the mutual relations between logic and philosophy in general. The possibility that it is not necessarily classical logic that should be applied to some fundamental problems of metaphysics motivates a more "apophatic" approach to philosophy.

Zygmunt Zawirski, a member of the Lwow-Warsaw Philosophical School, in 1927-28 published an extensive paper (in three parts) devoted to the critical examination of the eternal return hypothesis - the idea that the history of the universe is fundamentally a cyclic process. After presenting the development of this idea throughout the ages Zawirski discusses arguments on its behalf coming mainly from the second law of thermodynamics and from the Poincaré recurrence theorem. Zawirski's criticism is confronted with the present state of art. in this domain. Three new theoretical inputs are taken into account: first, our present knowledge of the global structure of space-time geometries with closed timelike curves; second, some results of relativistic thermodynamics; third, Tipler's no-return theorem (relativistic counterpart of the Poincaré theorem). Our knowledge regarding the eternal return, although not less hypothetical, is more „formalized” and more sophisticated than it was in Zawirski's time.

Noncommutative geometries and their application to physics have recently undergone rapid development. In the present paper the genesis of these geometries, some uf their principal methods and their philosophical significance are brietly discussed. Nuncommutative spaces are interesting from the philosophical point of view as an example of geometric spaces with no concepts of point and locality. It turns out that the authentic dynamics can be mathematically modelled even if there is no „local change” and no time.

There are many ways of reading a book of the book. One could take a look at the table of content, read a few pages and skip the rest; one could look for the main line of reasoning not bothering about details; one could read carefully from cover to cover (this does not happen to often); and one could not only to read everything, and also to ponder over the argument (this is rather exceptional) but even to enter into discussion with the author. Such readers should be precious to every author. I had a happy chance to have at least one such reader on whose critical remarks I now want to comment.         After politely praising my book, professor Burdzy carefully classified his remarks into four groups: errors, omissions, misleading information, and discussion. Errors (happily enough, only a few have been found) are not to be discussed with but corrected. I readily admit omissions; at least in some cases they could be called selection effects. As far as misleading material is concerned, I should say that to mislead the specialist is not the same as to mislead a common reader. In such a subtle matter as probability calculus many things depend on interpretation and interpretations are usually manifold. My account of interpretative questions related to probability are based on standard monographs and textbooks in the field (they are quoted in the book). It is a pity that, when working on the book, I did not know the book by professor Burdzy; if I did, perhaps my presentation of subjective interpretation would have been different. And finally, discussion…, I am open for it. A book that not excite discussion is a failed book.

The Michael Heller’s article entitled “How is philosophy in science possible?” was originally published in Polish in 1986 (see Heller, 1986) and then translated into English by Bartosz Brożek and Aeddan Shaw and published in 2011 in the collection of essays entitled Philosophy in Science. Methods and Applications (Heller, 2011). This seminal paper has founded further growth of the ‘philosophy in science’ and become the reference point in the methodological discussions, especially in Poland. On the 40th anniversary of Philosophical Problems in Science we wanted to make this paper freely available to the international public by reprinting its English version. In this issue it is followed by two additional articles-commentaries (by Paweł Polak and Kamil Trombik).

Various anniversaries encourage historical reflection. Although 40th anniversary is not a common reason for excessive celebration, in the case of a scientific journal, however, it is already long enough that it deserves a brief moment of thought.
Różne rocznice skłaniają do historycznych refleksji. Wprawdzie czterdzieści lat od jakiegoś wydarzenia nie zwykło się specjalnie świętować, ale w przypadku naukowego czasopisma jest to już na tyle długi okres, że warto mu poświęcić chwilę zamyślenia.

After briefly reviewing classical and quantum aspects of probability, basic concepts of the noncommutative calculus of probability (called also free calculus of probability) and its possible application to model the fundamental level of physics are presented. It is shown that the pair (M, *), where M is a (noncommutative) von Neumann algebra, and a state on it, is both a dynamical object and a probabilistic object. In this way, dynamics and probability can be unified in noncommutative geometry. Some philosophical consequences of such an approach are indicated.
