Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is an important oilseed crop and grain legume grown worldwide. The groundnut seed has dual advantage of being important as a source of edible oil as well as protein. However, it is self pollinating and possesses limited variability. Despite its long history of cultivation, broad sub-specific variability and wide geographic distribution of the cultivated groundnut, defects in its genetic composition with respect to requirement of man are wide spread and for many of these no remedial resources are known to exist among its varietal forms. The exploitation of genetic resources from wild species is extremely difficult because of ploidy differences between cultivated tetraploid and diploid wild species coupled with compatibility barriers except with Arachis section. to induce polygenic variability for yield and its components in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) var. VRI-2 were treated with γ-radiation (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 KR). Effects of gamma rays treatment were observed in M1 generation gradually reduced in all parameters except days to first flower to increase concentration of treatment. In M2, M3 and M4 populations, the significant increase of grain yields and yield components of Groundnut were observed. Potential high yielding mutants were identified in progenies of treated seeds.

Mutation breeding has been widely used for the improvement of plant characters in various crops. It is a powerful and effective tool in the hands of plant breeders. In any mutation breeding program, selection of an effective and efficient mutagen is very essential to produce high frequency of desirable mutation. Groundnut (Arachis hypogia) var. VRI-2. was treated with different concentration of physical and chemical mutagen namely gamma rays 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 KR and Ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS). For inducing mutation various concentration of EMS such as 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 % for six hours were applied to 200 seed sample of each concentration and one respective control. The LD50 value was observed in 50% of gamma rays and 0.5 % of EMS. The morphological and yield characters were significantly reduced seed germination, seedling survival, days to first flower, plant height, number of leaves per plant, number of grains per plant, grain length and breath, 100 grains weight, grain yield per plant, fresh and dry weight per plant. The increasing doses/concentration of gamma rays and EMS decreased in phenotypic and yield characters in M1generation. The mutagenized populations showed significantly higher variability in the M2 generation. Mutant lines showing higher yield per plant than the respective parents and checks were isolated in M2 and subsequent generation were significantly more pod yield and yield components than the untreated plants.

The potential use of commercial enzyme and pH control has been investigated for enhancing dairy manure fermentation and modeling dissolved organic matter and orthophosphate (PO4-P) dynamics of fermenters. Anaerobic lab-scale batch fermenters (initial total solids concentration (TSo) = 3.8 wt. %) were fed with separated dairy manure solids and operated under pH controls (5 and 9.5). The enzyme-supplemented alkaline fermenters clearly outperformed the acidic fermenters in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) solubilization: ca. 50% vs. 20%, respectively. Soluble PO4-P in the acidic fermenters was comparably higher but constituted less than 20% of total phosphorus. Better soluble COD (>80%) and soluble PO4-P (>70%) yields were noted for the dilute fermenters (TSo = 0.6–0.8 wt. %). An existing model was retrofitted, calibrated and validated for simulating dynamics of soluble COD, volatile fatty acids, and soluble orthophosphate under various pH and enzyme conditions.
