Background: The main goal of the research was to determine the usefulness of the Integration exercise programme stimulating development in children with learning difficulties who have preserved vestigial primitive reflexes. Their symptoms included weak motor and visual-motor coordination, lowered visual and auditory analysis and synthesis which resulted in difficulties in reading and writing, disrupted emotional development, psychomotor hyperactivity, weak concentration and other symptoms. Material/ Methods: 104 children with learning difficulties and other accompanying symptoms took part in the experiment. The children were trained in the shape of the Integration exercise programme at school under a therapist’s supervision and additionally at home under parental supervision. The children who went through the whole programme were qualified to the experimental group and those who resigned from the programme after a short period of time – to the control group. A pre-test and a post-test, before and after completion of the Integration exercise programme, was used to evaluate the results. Results: It was found that the Integration exercise programme is useful in therapy involving facilitation of development in children with learning difficulties, who exhibit various symptoms. Almost all the obtained results were statistically significant. The Integration exercise programme is particularly effective in the case of children exhibiting a whole set of symptoms along with learning difficulties, problems with concentration, weak emotion control, weak motor development, abnormal muscle tension, weak motor coordination. Conclusions:The Integration exercise programme widens the range of methods stimulating development and the range of possibilities to apply the therapy practiced in psychology, pedagogy and physiotherapy.

Stroke is a sudden-onset neurological deficit resulting from focal vascular lesions. This is either due to a clot-induced obstruction of a vessel (ischemic stroke) or a rupture of a vessel causing haemorrhage (hemorrhagic stroke). The appropriate diagnosis of brain stroke aphasic patients is a major public health problem one so important for effective rehabilitation. Here an important role is played by the diagnosis of impaired cognitive processes. The aim of the research was to find the index of impaired cognitive control with the use of ERPs in a patient following an ischemic stroke with aphasia. A male patient, aged 69, after an ischemic brain stroke experienced 4 months previously with resulting naming problem, was admitted to the Reintegrative and Teaching Center of the Polish Neuropsychological Society. In the neuropsychological evaluation three neuropsychological tests were employed: (a) the Boston Naming Test-Polish version, to evaluate the naming and word finding problem; (b) the nonverbal Bell test to ascertain a selective, visuospatial and strategic attentional evaluation; (c) the Digit Memory test to evaluate working memory capabilities; (d) ERPs as a neurophysiological index of impaired cognitive control. Significant changes were observed in testing. All cognitive functions including naming, nonverbal, visuospatial and strategic attention, along with the digit memory deviate substantially from the norm. The patient obtained a lo wer score, compared to the norm (p <0.05). Boston Naming Test (patient = 21< Mean-Norm = 57.29; SD= 0.52). Bell test (patient = 23 < Mean-Norm = 31.29; SD= 2.52). The purpose of the study was twofold: (1) to present post-COVID-19 syndrome, which involves a variety of ongoing neurological, neuropsychiatric, neurocognitive, emotional and behavioral disorders resulting from SARS-CoV-2 infection followed by a severe course of COVID-19 treated in long term pharmacologically induced coma in a visual artist, which impacted on her artwork; (2) to present QEEG/ERP results and neuropsychological testing results in the evaluation of the effectiveness of a comprehensive neurotherapy program, with individualized EEG-Neurofeedback, and art-therapy in the reduction of post-COVID-19 syndrome in this artist. Ms. G., 42, a visual artist, portraitist, with good health, became ill in May 2022. Allegedly flu symptoms appeared first. After a few days, shortness of breath joined in. The PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 was positive. The patient was hospitalized, referred to the ICU, put on a respirator and treated over 11 days of a pharmacologically induced coma. Two months after leaving hospital the patient developed post-COVID-19 syndrome. She was diagnosed by an interdisciplinary team: a neurologist, neuropsychiatrist and neuropsychologist. A PET scan of her brain revealed extensive changes involving a loss of metabolism in various brain areas. The presence of complex post-COVID, neurological, neuropsychiatric, neurocognitive, emotional and behavioral disorders was found and a neuropsychiatrist suggested a diagnosis of post-COVID schizophrenia. She was refered to the Reintegration and Training Center of the Polish Neuropsychological Society. We tested the working hypothesis as to the presence of schizophrenia and there was no reduction in the difference of ERPs waves under GO/NOGO task conditions. The absence of a neuromarker for schizophrenia allowed us to exclude this diagnosis and to propose a new disease entity, that being post-COVID-19 syndrome. She received a comprehensive two-component program of neurotherapy: (1) program A, consisting in goal-oriented neuropsychological rehabilitation, including art therapy, and (2) program B, based on the most commonly used form of EEG-Neurofeedback: frequency/ power EEG-Neurofeedback, using 2 bipolar surface electrodes, with the protocols written for her specific needs. The comprehensive neurotherapy program lasted 10 weeks, EEG Neurofeedback and art therapy classes were conducted 3 times a week for 45 minutes each. We found that after the completion of the comprehensive neurotherapy program there was a statistically significant reduction in high beta activity compared to the normative HBI database, which is associated with a reduction of anxiety. Also, we observed the improvement of neurocognitive functioning in neuropsychological testing (a significant reduction of anxiety and a noticeable improvement in neurocognitive functions). It should be stressed that the artist was happy that she had regained the ability to create, and even sells her artwork, although her style of painting had changed. Almost all the neurological, psychiatric, neurocognitive, emotional and behavioral disturbances, were reduced in their severity. The artist showed marked improvement and was able to return to painting. The artwork she produced after her illness is in high demand with art collectors. It can be also helpful in the reintegration of the Self System, and the improvement in her quality of life. Human Brain Index (HBI) methodology might be very useful in diagnosing and developing therapies for patients with Post-COVID-19 Syndrome.

Nowadays, amphetamines constitute the prescription drugs most commonly abused by adolescents and young adults (Berman, O’Neill, Fears et al. 2008). The prevalence of problematic (mainly illegal) use of amphetamines as a stimulant by college students, and here especially before serious examinations, has also been rising. This fact represents a serious public health concern. The patient, aged 19, was awakened from from a long-term coma that had lasted 21 days following an amphetamine overdose and manifested tetraparesis, cortical blindness and deficits in cognitive and emotional processes. After a year of rehabilitation the majority of symptoms had disappeared, but cortical blindness andworking memory deficits remained. In addition, frontal lobe syndrome symptoms appeared. After two years of therapy as a result of immense tiredness caused by all an night wedding reception she started to manifest Charles-Bonnet syndrome. She experienced strange visual sensations such as visual hallucinations and saw various non-existing shapes (coloured blots, patterns and fireworks of vivid colours). She also saw objects (often terrifying) as well as animals (mainly African) and people with deformed faces and long teeth, and persons in African dress with feathers and coral beads in their hair. Her real identity was not remembered by the patient for longer than 2 hours and even then she insisted on being referred to as Shakira. She was given a qEEG examination (in open and closed eyes conditions) and ERPs with the use of auditory stimuli at the period when the hallucinations (to a small degree) still occurred. Studies conducted into the functional neuroimaging of the brain work in milliseconds in the examined patient can explain her symptoms. A comparison of the subject’s ERPs with the grand average of ERPs in healthy controls shows that the N170 and N 250 components are impaired in the subject: the occipital-temporal area of the subject brain shows a strong positivity instead of negativities. This positivity might reflect an enhanced reactivity of neurons in the corresponding area induced by the removal of lateral inhibition from the neurons as a result of local damage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We evaluated the effectiveness of three different rehabilitation programs for chronic behavioral disorders in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients with orbito-frontal damage (OFC), incurred from 13 to 15 years prior to enrollment. From among 547 adult patients with severe TBIs treated neurosurgically from 1999 to 2003, 60 were selected for the study, divided into three groups of 20, matched for age and sex. Each group received one of three different rehabilitation protocols. Group A received a comprehensive program with two components: (1) a 6-month early neuropsychological rehabilitation program targeting cognitive deficits, beginning immediately post-injury, and (2) the “Academy of Life” program, with weekly meetings aimed at reducing behavioral disorders in social transactions. Group B received only cognitive rehabilitation, while Group C received only the “Academy of Life” progam. The Frontal Behavioral Inventory (FBInv) was used to assess behavioral disorders at baseline and again after completion of the study. At baseline, all 60 patients still displayed all or most of the common behavioral symptoms characteristic of frontal syndrome. The improvement achieved by group A (the comprehensive program) was significantly better upon completion of the study than that shown by the patients in groups B (cognitive only) and C (social skills only). A comprehensive program of rehabilitation, which combines early neuropsychological rehabilitation of cognitive deficits with the “Academy of Life” program, aimed at improving social skills, proved to be more effective than either of these two components administered without the other
