Opis:
In 1986 the Archaeological Department of University of Łódź conducted excavations in the settlement of Pomeranian culture site 2. This site has been already known from very few records describing the previoue rescue investigations (from 1926 and 1962). Two settlement phases were distinguished on it: the first one related to the settlement of the culture of funnel-shaped wine-cups and the other one to Pomeranian culture. The archaeological-natural studies led nowadays aim at identification of settlement processes on the backround of changes in the natural environment. The present paper attempts to summing up the first stage of investigations. It includes facts known from archaeological sources and natural studies conducted so far (palinologic and pnlaeobotanical) which indicated on existing relationships among climatic changes, habitat conditions and recorded material traces of the settlement.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present different possibilities of reconstructing the primaeval natural environment on the example of Tuchola Forests as well as the extent to which such reconstruction is possible. It is an obvious fact that ecology exerts an influence on development of social formations, economy types, and the cultural development degree. That is why in researches carried out by archaeologists there are appearing more and more frequently attempts at superimposing the occuring cultural changes on the background of the natural environment conditions in which these changes were taking place. Before proceeding to the reconstruction of the primaeval environment it was necessary to get acquainted with the present conditions prevailing in Tuchola Forest, their geology, geomorphology, fauna and flora. This was followed by analysis of materials provided by pallnological analyses performed on archaeological positions in the area of Tuchola Forest (Obrowo, Iwiec, Cisy Staropolskie, Siwe Bagno, Smoldziny Turbary, Stawek Lake, Odry), and those from the neighbouring areas and belonging to the same geobotanical country (Fletnowo, Radowiska Małe, Mielno near Lipno). The data gathered in this way allowed to reveal changes in the natural environment occuring with the lapse of time. They also allowed to note the dominance of the pine-tree in this area for at least the last 5000 years. The preserved relics of fauna and flora coming from the reservations in Tuchola Forest allowed to trace the big diversity of habitats to be found here and connected with ecological conditions corresponding to them. The paleobotanical analysis of macrofragments produced rather poor data since in the area in question there is known only one position examined by means of this method (Odry)• These scarce data allowed to determine a strong •correlation between vegetation and geonorphology in this area as well as the time from which changes produced by man's activity should be reckoned with. These changes are more noticeable In the South-Western part of Tuchola Forest where more fertile soils were attracting groups of people earlier and where differentiated natural environment was undergoing bigger changes. These scarce data sources considerably restricted the reconstruction, but despite it such reconstruction seems to be useful in analysing changes In the human settlement process in this area.

Opis:
The present article attemps to confront the data from anthropological and archaeological sources from sets of the grave exploited during studies on the burials ground of Wielbark culture in Odry in 1972-1978. As a result of this confrontation it can be concluded that children’s graves situated in this burials ground can be dated for the whole period of its use. Within the site they do not constitute the distinguishing group appearing in from of flat graves as well as grave-mouds. No relation between the age of the dead and the form of the grave he had been buried in was observed. The confrontation or archaeological and anthropological sources allows for the statement that neither the size of the hollow of skeleton graves nor the archaeological material included in it can be the only indicators of the dead’s age. However, in case of the lack of any remains of bones all other data should be considered and criticised. As a result of analysis of burials it can be said that burials classified as children’s ones exceeded 1/3 of all burials.

Opis:
A certain departure from the model of economic development generally accepted in the rest of Polish territories is seen in the development of ancient and early mediaeval economy of the people dwelling in the northern parts of Tuchola Forests. Untill the end of the early bronze age an extensive economy of mesolythic character and since then the animal breeding dominated there. The land cultivation, although it has been confirmed by the presence of single grains of corn in pollen analysis spectrum since the younger Atlantic period was probably the secondary economic activity of the people till the Roman period. Only in early Middle Ages (about the XIII-th century) one can tell about the increased range of agriculture. It is likely that local younger mesolythic communities got to know the animal breeding due to contacts with population of culture of funnel-beaker culture. It seems that beginning with the younger Atlantic period the animal breeding initially accompanied other branches of economy of mesolythic character but with time it became dominating among other farming activities. It seems to reach its climax during tużyce - Pomeranian period(from the end of the IV-th period of the bronze age till the mid Laten period) but in successive periods the animal breeding may have played an important role in economy of the local people. Environmental conditions which on one hand hindered the development of agriculture on and on the other hand were conducive to extensive methods of gaining food in sufficient amount for maintaining groups of people dwelling in the discussed period in the northern part of Tuchola Forests were favourable for such a model of economic development.

Opis:
Archaeological investigations carried out by the Department of Archaeology of the Łódź University in the Odry microregion have revealed 10 prehistoric settlements. Neolithic settlement is represented by the Funnel Beaker culture and the Early Bronze Age, by relics known from archival data and associated with the Iwno and Trzciniec cultures. The settlement of the Lusatian- Pomeranian cycle from the end of the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age is the best recognized. The Roman period is documented by the Wielbark culture cemetery at Odry, investigated for many years, and the early medieval period is represented by single surface finds. In this paper an attempt has been made to find successive settlement phases in a peat-bog profile at Odry by means of the palynological method. Because of the specificity of the analysed material not all periods of intensive settlement have been distinguished in the pollen material. However, the obtained 14C dates and pollen curves allow us to correlate certain natural facts with archaeological findings. Owing to the pollen analysis it has been possible not only to reconstruct the natural environment in prehistoric times but also to observe the economic activity o f man. Yet a more complete reconstruction will be possible only on the basis of examined lake sediments from the region in question.
