    Opis:
    The evolutionary theology is a new branch of theology in which the dynamic picture of the origin and development of life in Universe by means of the adaptive processes governed by the natural selection is considered to be the adequate ontological foundation. The presented paper surveys the challenges that the implementation of the evolutionary ontology presses upon selected basic theological issues: methodology of theology, natural theology, the doctrine of the original sin and the problem of suffering and evil. It will be argued that the large extent of the expected modifications within the theological expression as the dynamic ontology is introduced qualifies as the change of the theological paradigm similarly to how the changes of the paradigms in sciences lead to the scientific revolutions. Finally, a novel model of the rationality of the development of the theological doctrine will be proposed where the hermeneutics of continuity and the hermeneutics of rupture are not in opposition but they contribute to the overall rationality as its complementary constitutive principles.
    Teologia ewolucyjna jest nowym obszarem w teologii, w którym zakłada się, że dynamiczny obraz początku i rozwoju życia we Wszechświecie, oparty na rządzonych doborem naturalnym scenariuszach adaptacyjnych, stanowi właściwą ontologiczną podstawę. Przedstawiona praca zawiera przegląd wyzwań, jakie wprowadzenie ewolucyjnego obrazu stawia wybranym problemom teologicznym: metodologii teologii, teologii naturalnej, doktrynie o grzechu pierworodnym oraz problemowi zła i cierpienia. W trakcie prowadzonych rozważań argumentowane będzie, że skala oczekiwanych modyfikacji w ekspresji teologicznej wraz z wprowadzeniem dynamicznej ontologii kwalifikuje się jako zmiana teologicznego paradygmatu podobnie jak zmiana paradygmatu w nauce prowadzi zgodnie z koncepcją Thomasa Kuhna do naukowej rewolucji. Ostatecznie, zaproponowany zostanie nowy model racjonalności rozwoju doktryny teologicznej, w którym hermeneutyka ciągłości i zerwania nie stoją w stosunku do siebie w opozycji, ale stanowią dla tej racjonalności jej dwie komplementarne składowe.

    Contemporary physics is in a great need of a unified theoretical framework allowing for a comprehensive physical description of particles and interactions. One of the leading candidates for such a framework, the superstring theory, has recently provoked immense critics due to the lack of its experimental verification (L. Smolin, R. Penrose). The survey of the specificity of the unification mechanisms that are operative within the superstring theory shows that, in comparison with such a successful paradigm as that of the general theory of relativity, the unification model of the theory does not follow the strict relation between the formalism and a unifying physical idea. The critical analysis of the superstring theory, presented by Lee Smolin in his book The Trouble with Physics, offers a detailed re-evaluation of theory's physical foundations but remains insensitive to issues of methodological, ontological and epistemological import. In particular, Smolin seems to be aware of the lack of the background independence as well as the need to compactify extra space-time dimensions that are hoped to be alleviated in the future M-theory. He treats purely mathematical criteria such as that of renormalizability on an equal footing with the physical interpretation of the theory. Such a methodological disarray leads to Smolin's biased estimate of the true drawbacks of the superstring theory.

    The aim of the presented article is to provide an in-depth analysis of the adequacy of designating Penrose as a complex Pythagorean in view of his much more common designation as a Platonist. Firstly, the original doctrine of the Pythagoreans will be briefly surveyed with the special emphasis on the relation between the doctrine of this school and the teachings of the late Platonic School as well as its further modifications. These modifications serve as the prototype of the contemporary claims of the mathematicity of the Universe. Secondly, two lines of Penrose’s arguments in support of his unique position on the ontology of the mathematical structures will be presented: (1) their existence independent of the physical world in the atemporal Platonic realm of pure mathematics and (2) the mathematical structures as the patterns governing the workings of the physical Universe. In the third step, a separate line of arguments will be surveyed that Penrose advances in support of the thesis that the complex numbers seem to suit these patterns with exceptional adequacy. Finally, the appropriateness of designation Penrose as a complex Pythagorean will be assessed with the special emphasis on the suddle threshold between his unique position and that of the adherents of the mathematicity of the Universe.

    Opis:
    A new paradigm in theology, termed evolutionary theology, supports the understanding of ecology as the proper ordering of the relations between living organisms and their environment. It is argued that evolutionary theology yields a unique conceptual framework in which the human species share a common history with the entire Universe and respecting nature’s integrity means securing a common destiny to everything that exists. This is a powerful motivation for adopting a balanced ecological attitude aimed at respecting nature’s inherent integrity. Furthermore, proposing theological arguments to substantiate ecological claims will help neutralize the objections that religion as such promotes anti-ecological attitudes. Such objections become more pressing when religion focuses exclusively on the afterlife in the immaterial and eternal world to come, and neglects the well-being of the material and temporal Universe.

    Despite many arduous attempts to reconcile the separation between theology and science, the common ground where these two areas of intellectual inquiry could converge has not been fully identified yet. The purpose of this paper is to use evolutionary theology as the new and unique framework in which science and theology are indeed brought into coherent alignment. The major step in this effort is to acknowledge that theology can no longer dialogue with science but must assume science and its method as its conceptual foundation. This approach successfully does away with any tensions that may arise between the two disciplines and establishes a firm ground on which neither of them will turn into ideology. Moreover, it enables the dialogue with contemporary scientific atheism on solid grounds and the restoration of the credibility of theology in the secularist culture of the day.

    An analysis of two different reconstructions of Aristotelian mechanics in the language of contemporary physics reveals interesting aspects of the historical development of physics: (1) there exists a structural invariant in all physical representations of reality in the form of the Cartesian product and (2) all intertheoretical transitions to date, at each stage of unification, have occurred in accordance with the correspondence principle. This means that the historical development of physics can be regarded as rational in the sense that subsequent theories become ever more general and Aristotelian mechanics can be treated as a natural forerunner of Newtonian mechanics and, by extension, Einstein’s relativity theory.

    The central goal of the presented article is to show that the type of rationality proper to the method of the contemporary sciences yields a unique conceptual environment in which the spirit of rationality instilled to the theological thought by its encounter with the Greek philosophy finds its natural expansion. At the outset, the origins of the Greek rationality in the Ionian school of philosophy are briefly discussed in order to illuminate their adequacy for the exposition and defense of doctrine in the times of the early Church Fathers. Next, the specificity of the scholastic method of St. Thomas Aquinas briefly surveyed to indicate the nature of the unique harmony between faith and reason achieved by the Angelic Doctor. In the following step, the role of rationality in theology is gleaned through negative examples of its elimination as evident in nominalism and the subsequent Lutheran intervention. This is followed by a short discourse into of the origins and the specificity of the contemporary scientific method with particular emphasis on the method’s unique potential to expand and deepen the Greek rationality. Finally, a case study of the evolutionary theology is offered in which the implementation of the dynamic (evolutionary) picture of the Universe as the conceptual foundation opens up new and profound ways of understanding the Universe’s meaning and the meaning of man in particular. Thus the spirit of the hellenistic rationality in theology is not only preserved but also significantly enhanced.

    Wychodząc od usystematyzowania hellerowskiej tezy o matematyczności przyrody, niniejsze studium poświęcone głównie będzie pokazaniu i krytycznej ocenie racji, wedle których Heller desygnuje teorię kategorii jako matematyczne środowisko szczególnie predestynowane dla wyartykułowania tej tezy. Kluczowe w tym kontekście będzie wskazanie, co uprawnia go do wprowadzenia mającej istotne ontologiczne znaczenie koncepcji pola kategorii i utożsamienia go z polem racjonalności. Ostatecznie stanie się możliwe lepsze zrozumienie, w jakim sensie w kontekście sformalizowanych teorii fizycznych Heller operuje pojęciem apofatyzmu filozoficznego, który wydaje się trafnie ujmować specyfikę jego poglądów na ontologiczne zobowiązania tych teorii i gdzie być może zbliża się on do niebezpiecznych myślowych pułapek. W swojej apofatycznej postawie Heller pozostaje blisko pierwszoplanowych postaci współczesnej fizyki i noblistów, Alberta Einsteina czy Rogera Penrose’a: fizyka nie mówi o tym, jaka rzeczywistość jest, ale pozwala stanąć na drodze do rzeczywistości.
    Starting with the systematization of Michael Heller’s thesis of the mathematicity of the Universe, the inquiry carried out in this article will be devoted to the presentation and the critical analysis of why the category theory can be designated as the most suitable mathematical environment to articulate this thesis. The key task will be to show what motivates Heller to introduce an ontologically pregnant concept of the field of categories and to equate it with the field of rationality. Finally, it will become more transparent in what sense Heller utilizes the concept of the philosophical apophatism in the context of the formalized physical theories. Heller shares his apophatic attitude with such prominent figures of the theoretical physics as Albert Einstein and Roger Penrose: physics does not say what reality is but it places a physicist on the road to reality.

    The transposition of  the theological expression into the framework of  epistemology suggested by the contemporary philosophy of science is a long-desired project. The presented article offers an overview of the different epistemological and methodological issues that arise when this expression is carried out in the common sense paradigm. It turns that once the necessary change into the mode of knowledge acquisition of contemporary science is made, one can significantly improve theology’s both methodological and conceptual foundations. In particular, this concerns the use of abstract concepts to better penetrate the intricacies of the Divine nature as well as the non-classical logics to improve theology’s inferential basis. The resulting question of the contextuality of theology, namely, its dependence on the conceptual framework and the picture of the world, is also surveyed. Consequently, theology can be perceived as a lexically open project. In conclusion it is argued that while the contemporary theology should retain its common sense exposition for the pastoral and catechetical purposes that allows for the efficient transmission of faith through intuitive knowledge, the state-of-the-art theological research must reach out to to abstract conceptual frameworks to assure the depth of its penetrative insight.

    The modeling of the human mind based on quantum effects has been gaining considerable interest due to the intriguing possibility of applying non-local interactions in the studies of consciousness. Inasmuch as the majority of the pertinent studies are restricted to the exclusive analysis of mental phenomena, the quantum model of mind proposed by Roger Penrose constitutes a part of a much larger scheme of the ultimate unification of physics. Penrose's efforts to find the 'missing science of consciousness' presuppose the non-algorithmic character of human thinking inferred from Gödel's incompleteness theorem. This is supposed to combine with the anticipated non-algorithmic character of the future quantum gravity theory involving the objective reduction of a quantum mechanical state vector. By surveying contemporary achievements of cognitive sciences as well as the development of Penrose's conjectures, presented in his recent work The Road to Reality, we wish to show that his non-algorithmic quantum model of human mind is contingent upon the fundamental philosophical assumption of the mathematicity of the Universe.
