Opis:
Marine algae Gelidium, Grateloupia elliptica Holmes, and Codium fragile are employed for preparation of PANI/seaweed composites. Infrared absorption (IR), electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy measurements are carried out to confirm the resultant structure. The direct use of natural biological materials for polymerisation reaction allows us to production of polymers with characteristic surface. This can be referred to as bio-interface polymerisation.

Opis:
Herein we report on the preparation of polyaniline (PANI) composite using a cocoon by in situ chemical oxidative polymerisation. The composites thus prepared were characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), infrared (IR), and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. We confirmed the PANI/cocoon composite and subsequent carbonisation allowed the formation of micro-sized wafer-shaped carbon. The polymerisation reaction occurs in a chiral reaction field of the silk surface, which can be referred to as bio-interface polymerisation.
W artykule opisano przygotowanie polianilinowych (PANI) kompozytów przy zastosowaniu kokonów i przeprowadzeniu in situ chemicznej utleniającej polimeryzacji. Wytworzone kompozyty zostały scharakteryzowane za pomocą skaningowego mikroskopu elektronowego (SEM), analizy termograwimetrycznej (TGA), spektrofotometrii w podczerwieni (IR) oraz elektronowego rezonansu spinowego (ESR). Potwierdzono, że otrzymane kompozyty, a następnie ich karbonizacja umożliwiły powstawanie mikroskopijnej wielkości płytek węglowych.

Opis:
Ullmann type polycondensations in the presence of CuI and a base were carried out to afford network type π-conjugated copolymers. Infrared absorption spectroscopy measurements and surface observation using a scanning electron microscopy are carried out. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy measurements revealed that the cross-linked copolymers thus obtained contain small amount of copper. This polymerization conveniently allows production of network π-conjugated polymers. The polymer can be expected to have thermo-resistance.

Opis:
Two plants having tubular stems were examined. Water lily belongs to nymphaeaceae, while butterbur belongs to asteraceae. These plants are not relatives; however both have large leaves with lacinia. Furthermore, these plants have tubular long stems. Observations of leaf surface are described. Water lily leaf has an inside layer consisting of a network polygonal structure. The leaf has three layers at the microscopic level including small transparent skin tissue, and a middle layer showing a polygonal green structure where photosynthesis can be performed. The bottom layer shows fine tubular tissues. Stomas are observed on the surface of the leaf, with transparent tissue on the top layer and the stem of the butterbur with honeycomb (polygonal) structures in the leaves and stems. Plants are of interest for technology because their remarkable functional structure may provide clues for applications in materials science. In this study, the fine structures of the two plants were observed to learn their functional structure.

Signal molecules for quorum sensing are employed for ligands to palladium. The complex can be used as a catalyst. Migita-Kosugi-Stille coupling reactions are driven by using a series of N-(3- oxo-acyl)-L-homoserine lactones as ligands coordinating with Pd. Catalysis of [Pd-(signal molecules for quorum sensing), or Pd/QS] allows production of conjugated polymers with light-emitting functions.

Opis:
We propose a practical simple local navigation system inspired by the sequence learning mechanism of the entorhino-hippocampal system. The proposed system memorizes a route as sequences of landmarks in the same way humans do. The proposed local navigation system includes a local route memory unit, landmark extraction unit, and learning-type matching unit. In the local route memory unit, the concept of the sequence learning mechanism of the entorhino-hippocampal system is implemented using a fully connected network, while a sequence of landmarks is embedded in the connection matrix as the local route memory. This system has two operation modes: learning and recall modes. In learning mode, a sequence of landmarks, i.e. a local route, is represented by enhanced loop connections in the connection matrix. In recall mode, the system traces the stored route comparing current landmarks with the stored landmarks using the landmark extraction and learning-type matching units. The system uses a prospective sequence to match the current landmark sequence with the recalled one. Using a prospective sequence in the route comparison allows confirmation of the correct route and deals with any slight change in the current sequence of landmarks. A certainty index is also introduced for judging the validity of the route selection. We describe a basic update mechanism for the stored landmark sequence in the case of a small change in the local route memory. The validity of the proposed system is confirmed using an autonomous mobile robot with the proposed navigation system.

Opis:
In the present study, we used next-generation sequencing to investigate the impacts of two commercially available prescription diet regimens on the fecal microbiomes of eleven client-owned healthy pet dogs. We tested an anallergenic diet on 6 dogs and a low-fat diet on 5 dogs. Before starting the study, each dog was fed a different commercial diet over 5 weeks. After collecting pre-diet fecal samples, the anallergenic or low-fat diet was administered for 5 weeks. We then collected fecal samples and compared the pre- and post-diet fecal microbiomes. In the dogs on the anallergenic diet, we found significantly decreased proportions of Bacteroides, Ruminococcaceae, and Fusobacteriaceae, belonging to the phyla Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Fusobacteria, respectively. The proportion of the genus Streptococcus belonging to the phylum Firmicutes was significantly increased upon administering the anallergenic diet. In the dogs on the low-fat diet, although the phyla Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes tended to increase (p=0.116) and decrease (p=0.147) relative to the pre-diet levels, respectively, there were no significant differences in the proportions of any phylum between the pre- and post-diet fecal microbiomes. The anallergenic diet induced a significantly lower diversity index value than that found in the pre-diet period. Principal coordinate analysis based on unweighted UniFrac distance matrices revealed separation between the pre- and post-diet microbiomes in the dogs on the anallergenic diet. These results suggest that, even in pet dogs kept indoors in different living environments, unification of the diet induces apparent changes in the fecal microbiome.
