Opis:
The article, based on the commemorative books of the Brlićevac summer house and the correspondence of the Croatian writer Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, attempts to show the influence that the family estate had on Brlić-Mažuranić and her work. Atthe estate in the immediate vicinityof Brod, where the spouses lived, the family spent the summer months for many consecutive years and Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić wrote most of her works. The close contact with nature, which this place provided to a nature-loving writer, became the dominant source of her inspiration, it also guaranteed great well-being, unattainable in other places she lived ( Brod, Zagreb ). The property played a huge role in the life of the famous Croatian who, in her time free from the work in the vineyard, willingly devoted herself to recreation typical of a summer resort, and each celebration of the moments spent together with the loved ones, led to a kind of sacralization of this space.

Opis:
This article shows the phenomenon of Croatian journalist and writer Marija Jurić Zagorka. Well-known in Croatia and recently very popular not only among her readers but also scholars (especially feminist-oriented), she remains almost completely absent in Poland today despite the fact that her first novel, The Slaves [Roblje], was translated at the very beginning of the 20th century and she herself was commemorated as the first female journalist from Central Europe in the 1930s.

Opis:
In this paper, I would like to present the story of two Polish 20th century translations of Osman by baroque poet Ivan Gundulić. In the production process of the translation there were involved three main actors: Croatian initiator of the whole process, Julije Benešić, and the two translators, Czesław Jastrzębiec-Kozłowski and Jerzy Pogonowski.

Opis:
Unatoč nesmanjenoj, više no stogodišnjoj popularnosti Ivane Brlić ‑Mažuranić u Hrvatskoj, njezino je stvaralaštvo u Poljskoj gotovo odsutno. Pokušavajući utvrditi razloge te odsutnosti, treba rekonstruirati okolnosti u kojima su nastali poljski prijevodi zbirke Priče iz davnine i ocrtati siluete njezinih prevoditelja. Vode nas one do umjetnice i slikarice Wande Pogonowske, koju treba smatrati prvom poljskom prevoditeljicom poznatih bajki.
Despite the over one hundred years long popularity of Ivana Brlić ‑Mažuranić in Croatia, her collection Croatian Tales of Long Ago remains almost absent in Poland. An attempt to determine the reasons for this absence involves the reconstruction of the circumstances of its Polish trans‑ lations and the outline of the translators’ silhouettes, which leads to Wanda Pogonowska, who was a visual artist and a painter by education and who should be considered as the first Polish translator of the famous Croatian tales. Although she took on the translation twice (in the 1930s and 1950s) and has remained the only person who translated the entire collection into Polish, the final effect of her translation efforts, due to the problems with its publication, is still unknown, and the memory of Wanda Pogonowska is slowly fading away. Wiktor Bazielich was also an amateur translator but who made up for his lack of professionalism with his extraordinary perseverance and managed to publish in the interwar press his own translation of one fairy tale from the Brlić‑Mažuranić’ collection. The same tale about the fisherman Palunko was translated again forty years later by Magdalena Petryńska (unaware of the existence of the earlier Polish version), who, with her considerable achievements, in contrast to the pre ‑war translators of Brlić ‑Mažuranić, proudly represents the circle of the most outstanding contemporary Polish translators of South Slavic prose. Existing translations show that the translators adopted extremely different transla‑ tion strategies. Wiktor Bazielich’s attitude, which could result from his intention of introducing Polish recipients to the realities of South Slavic culture or from the translator’s skills, is close to formal equivalence; while the procedure of Magdalena Petryńska was dictated by a concern for the communication comfort of the story’s recipients — children and can be described as functional equivalence.

Opis:
The text presents one of Dubravka Ugresic’s latest novels perceived as the subject of translation. "The ministry of pain" founded on (ex-)Yugoslavian past turns out extremely difficult, in some parts it seems close to the untranslability. The problem concerns especially the parts which are more essayistic and estimate Croatian literature or communism in former Yugoslavia. Dorota Jovanka Ćirlić, the translator, had decided to explain some of the difficulties in her special note added to the novel (the footnotes supplement the writer’s endnotes). The troublesome words and phrases left without that kind of explanation might find it directly in the novel (descriptively commented) or require reader’s self-reliance. Apart from the cultural setting there is also a language question in the novel which because of its complex character and the translation strategy shall be interpreted separately.
