Opis:
Aquatic animals, which are the result of many millions of years of evolutionary optimization, are very quick, efficient, robust, and versatile. Accordingly, biologically-inspired mechanisms which emulate the movement of animals have recently become very popular. For the efficient design of a propulsion system it is very important to analyze the fluid flow in detail. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) has become a powerful technique to understand the phenomena because it gives extensive information about the fluid flow characteristics. In the present work, a propulsion system consisting of an undulating fin which emulates the fish swimming was built. In order to optimize the mechanism, several undulating configurations were studied using a 3D turbulent CFD model. The thrust, drag, efficiency and hydrodynamic characteristics were analyzed. Furthermore, it was shown that the efficiency and thrust depend strongly on the oscillation frequency, amplitude and wavelength. In order to validate this CFD model, the numerically obtained thrust was successfully compared with experimental results from the laboratory mechanism.

Opis:
Botrytis cinerea is the cause of the most common disease in the Galician and Portuguese vineyards. Knowledge of the spore levels in the atmosphere of vineyards is a tool for forecasting models of the concentration of spores in order to adjust the phytosanitary treatments to real risk infection periods. The presented study was conducted in two vineyards, one located in Cenlle (Spain) and other in Amares (Portugal), from 2005-2007. A volumetric trap, model Lanzoni VPPS-2000, was used for the aerobiological study. Phenological observations were conducted on 20 vines of three grape varieties in Cenlle (Treixadura, Godello and Loureira) and in Amares (Trajadura, Loureiro and Pedernã), by using the BBCH scale. The highest total spore concentrations during the grapevine cycle were recorded in 2007 in both locations (Cenlle:16,145 spores; Amares:1,858 spores), and the lowest, in 2005 in Cenlle (1,700 spores) and in Amares (800 spores) in 2006. In Cenlle, the best adjusted model was an ARIMA (0,2,2), including the relative humidity four days earlier, while in Amares there was an ARIMA (1,2,3), considering the relative humidity three days earlier and rainfall two days earlier. The t-test showed no significant difference between observed and predicted data by the model.

The CO2 emission is a significant environmental problem threatening the sustained development of mankind. One of the possible ways of limiting the emission is the disposal of carbon dioxide in geologic formations.A pilot project of CO2 storage in geologic formations in the Czech Republic (REPP-CO2) is presented in this paper. The project is part of the Norwegian Fund and the research consortium (headed by the Czech Republic Geologic Office), with VSB-TU Ostrava as a participant. The VSB-TU Ostravais represented by the Faculty of Geology and Mining (HGF) and the Faculty of Metallurgy and Materials Science (FMMI) in the consortium. The research activity of the consortium mainly focuses on the development and improvement of selected laboratory methods, modelling and simulation, which are basic for the evaluation of safety of CO2 storing in geologic forma-tions. Thise paper presents the research conducted by the Faculty of Geology and Mining (HGF) VSB-TU Ostrava within the project.

Opis:
Several species of Solanum produce secondary metabolites with antimicrobial activity. In the present study, the inhibitory activity of Solanum chrysotrichum, S. erianthum, S. torvum and S. rostratum against phytopathogenic Curvularia lunata was determined. Methanol extracts from roots, stems, leaves and fruits were evaluated by the method of mycelial inhibition on agar and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined on a liquid medium. To increase the antimicrobial activity, the combined activity of the most active extracts for each phytopathogen was also determined (a combination of intra and interspecies extracts). The results showed that 12 of the 16 methanolic extracts of Solanum species had antifungal effects against C. lunata. The extracts of S. rostratum and S. erianthum developed the highest activity (~80% inhibition and 28.4 MIC μg . ml–1), even, equal to or greater than, the reference fungicide. The mixture of the active extracts of S. chrysotrichum and S. torvum increased their activity. Various extracts affected the macro and microscopic morphology and most of them reduced the number of conidia of the fungus. This resulted in the capacity to control the vegetative growth and reproduction of C. lunata, the causal fungus of corn leaf spot disease.

Opis:
Introduction. Although airborne fungal diversity in tropical countries is known to be considerable, aerobiological research to-date has identified only a part of the fungal mycobiota that may have an impact both on human health and on crops. Previous studies in Havana city identified only 30 genera and 5 spore types; therefore, new research is required in these latitudes. This study sought to investigate airborne spore levels in Havana, with a view to learning more about local fungal diversity and assessing its influence in quantitative terms. Materials and method. A Hirst type volumetric sampler was located on the rooftop of a building 35 meters above ground level, in a busy area of the city. Sampling was carried out continuously (operating 24hours/day), at 10 L per minute during the year 2015. The fungal spores were collected on a Melinex tape coated with a 2% silicone solution. The results were expressed as spores per cubic meter (spores/m3) of air when to referring to daily values, and spores count if referring to annual value. Results. Fourteen new genera were identified in the course of volumetric sampling: six produce ascospores and eight conidia. Morphobiometric characteristics were noted for all genera, and airborne concentrations were calculated. These genera accounted for 56.4% of relative fungal frequency over the study year. Conclusions. Many airbone fungi are primary causes of both respiratory disease and crop damage. These new findings constitute a major contribution to Cuba’s aerobiological database.
