Opis:
Establishing end-to-end connections on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks requires setting up lightpaths, defining the sequence of optical fibres and the wavelength in each fibre (the routing and wavelength assignmentproblem) for traffic flow. This paper reviews a bicriteria model for obtaining a topological path (unidirectional or symmetric bidirectional) for each lightpath request in a WDM network, developed by the authors, and presents a performance analysis of the model by considering important network performance measures. An extensive performance analysis of the two bicriteria model is presented, comparing the performance metrics obtained with the monocriterion models using the same objective functions, in five different reference networks commonly used in literature.

Opis:
The operation of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks involves not only the establishment of lightpaths, defining the sequence of optical fibres and the wavelength in each fibre for traffic flow, but also a fault management scheme in order to avoid the huge loss of data that can result from a single link failure. Dedicated path protection, which establishes two end-to-end disjoint routes between the source-destination node pair, is an effective scheme to preserve customers' connections. This paper reviews a bicriteria model for dedicated path protection, that obtains a topological path pair of node-disjoint routes for each lightpath request in a WDM network, developed by the authors. An extensive performance analysis of the bicriteria model is then presented, comparing the performance metrics obtained with the monocriterion models using the same objective functions, in four different reference networks commonly used in literature.

Opis:
A greenhouse assay was carried out to evaluate the effect of winter cover crop residues on spontaneous plants that commonly occur on summer annual fields in Southern Brazil. Dry shoot residues of rye (Secale cereale), vetch (Vicia villosa), fodder radish (Raphanus sativus), and a mix of the three species, were applied over pots that had been seeded with alexandergrass (Brachiaria plantaginea), hairy beggarticks (Bidens pilosa), wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla), and morning glory (Ipomoea grandifolia) at four different depths (0, 1, 2, or 4 cm). Plant emergence and biomass production were measured. Residues of rye reduced the emergence of B. plantaginea, while vetch diminished I. grandifolia and B. plantaginea emergence. Fodder radish reduced emergence of I. grandifolia. The mix of cover crops reduced emergence of I. grandifolia, B. plantaginea, and B. pilosa. None of the cover crops differed from the control on E. heterophylla emergence. The lowest yields in spontaneous plant shoot biomass were obtained from the cover with rye + vetch + fodder radish. The lowest values of root biomass occurred under cover with rye, fodder radish or the mix. Use of vetch residues decreased emergence of B. plantaginea and I. grandifolia, but enhanced biomass accumulation by the latter.

Opis:
The objective of this work is to investigate the influence of slotted air gap constructive parameters on magnetic flux density of rotating machines. For this purpose, different approaches were used to solve the air gap field diagram using finite element method and the magnetic field distribution uniformity was evaluated by Carter's factor calculation on two-dimensional and three-dimensional models. Sensitivity analysis of slot constructive parameters was performed and results show that slot geometry modifies the magnetic flux on air gap and shifts the air gap magnetic equipotential midline of double slotted machines. Finally, minimization of Carter’s factor on two-dimensional model presents an optimized slot geometry with a near uniform magnetic flux density distribution.

Opis:
This paper proposes a methodology based on system connections to calculate its complexity. Two study cases are proposed: the dining Chinese philosophers’ problem and the distribution center. Both studies are modeled using the theory of Discrete Event Systems and simulations in different contexts were performed in order to measure their complexities. The obtained results present i) the static complexity as a limiting factor for the dynamic complexity, ii) the lowest cost in terms of complexity for each unit of measure of the system performance and iii) the output sensitivity to the input parameters. The associated complexity and performance measures aggregate knowledge about the system.
