Opis:
The COVID-19 pandemic is recognized as one of the most dramatic global health, social, and economic crises of the last decades, and maybe the whole century. Therefore, it is obvious that there is a need to examine the constructs of new thinking, new ways of life, and new behavior, which will help people not only to overcome the pandemic but also to build a future after it. The words isolation, quarantine, social distancing, lockdown, masks, antibodies, and zoom meeting quickly became the keywords of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this article, which is based on an analysis of the scientific literature and interviews, we ask whether new behavioral patterns such as social distancing, mask-wearing, online communication, and others might become the “new normal”. However, what might be perceived as the “new normal” to some, may seem like social absurdity to others. Thus, with an open-minded approach, we analyze the “new normal” as a complex, controversial, and evolving concept.

Opis:
Background. Suboptimal health status (SHS) is recognised as a subclinical, reversible stage of a chronic disease. Previous studies have proposed that SHS may be related to poor lifestyle factors, as well as work-related and study-related stress. Objectives. The present study was designed to assess the relationship between health status, general distress and job-related risk factors. Material and methods. A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 606 current workers in Klaipeda, Lithuania, who had no history of clinically diagnosed disease. The SHS score was derived from SHSQ-25; the General Symptom Distress Scale (GSDS ) was used for distress evaluation. Results. 90% (547) of respondents revealed an optimal health level. The main domains of SHS status were fatigue and mental status. SHS was related to cardiovascular, digestive and musculoskeletal symptoms, as well as to frequent infections and allergy. SHS was more prevalent in women. The overall health status depends on the following job-related risk factors: the professional potential to grow, rest, deadlines, competition, work experience, income, etc. Conclusions. Health status was related to distress and mainly manifested itself through fatigue, anxiety and sleep disturbances. Resting hours, professional potential to grow, risk in another person’s life and work in public have a significant influence on SHS

Opis:
Background. Psychosocial stress is a cause of illness and can lead to behavioral changes that tend to be harmful to health. Stress at work can cause burnout and damage workers’ well-being and health. Timely diagnosis of distress symptoms can help ensure the quality of a worker’s life. Objectives. The aim of the study was to identify the stress prevalence and its expression and to reveal the influence of psychosocial factors. Material and methods. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 606 current workers of Klaipeda, Lithuania, who had no history of clinical diagnosed disease. The General Symptoms Distress Scale (GSDS) was used for distress evaluation. Results. Overall stress intensity in the study group was moderate. Anxiety, fatigue, pain, sleep difficulties, and concentration difficulties are the most common distress symptoms depending on workers’ gender, education, work experience, nature of work, insufficient rest, and some work related stress factors. Occupation, working hours per day, and health-related behavioral factors have no correlation with the distress symptoms. Conclusions. Overall stress intensity in the study group was 6 (out of 10). According to the GSDS, the mean number of distress symptoms was 3,8 (out of 13), the intensity of these was 4,6 (out of 10), and management was 6,1 (out of 10). Female gender, education, less work experience, sedentary nature of work, and insufficient rest are the factors positively associated with having more distress symptoms. Hazardous environmental conditions, competition and career growth, deadlines, meeting the public, hazards encountered, and physical demands influence the expression of distress symptoms.
