Opis:
The author presents an outline of a complete, yet un nished, theory of style. The outline can make the foundation of a stylistic research program. A full scienti c theory possesses a structure within which one can distinguish three levels: 1) philosophical (ontological assumptions as well as epis- temological-axiological ones); 2) theoretical-methodological (a set of highly abstract notions and theorems which conceptualize and structure the fragment of reality that is described and explained); 3) empirical (a set of notions and descriptive-observational theorems, stating something directly about the examined fragment). By making reference to philosophical ontology the author accepts – on the ground of linguistic ontology – an assumption of four ways, ones which are mutually connected and constitute a one- ness: 1) concrete linguistic actions and their textual products; 2) language system; 3) individual consciousness of language, and 4) collective awareness of language. Beginning with the idea of style as a humanistic structure of text, one can respectively speak about the following: 1) the style of a concrete text; 2) the comprehensive style (precisely speaking about stylistic models in the common norm); 3) individual styles as components of the language consciousness of individuals; 4) collective styles as components of language awareness of given communities. Developing theories of style on the theoretical-methodological level requires considering the rela- tion between language-text-style and the world, man, society, as well as mind and culture. These relations impinge on the vision of style-related phenomena considered on the empirical level. The rich accomplishments of stylistics can be united thanks to the integrative power of a complete theory and the increasingly stronger integrative-holistic trend in the development of science, which is complementary towards the analytical-reductive tendency.

Jądrem naukowego postępowania badawczego jest dążenie do zbudowania teorii. Struktura pełnej teorii obejmuje trzy poziomy: filozoficzny (zespół przyjętych a priori założeń ontologicznych, epistemologicznych i aksjologicznych), teoretyczno-metodologiczny (najbardziej ogólne twierdzenia i abstrakcyjne pojęcia, konceptualizujące strukturalizujące i interpretujące teoretyzowany fragment świata) oraz empiryczny (empiryczne twierdzenia i pojęcia orzekające coś bezpośrednio o badanych obiektach). W swych podstawach filozoficznych współczesne teorie budowane na naukach humanistycznych powinny uwzględniać reinterpretację relacji między światem przedmiotowym, umysłem i językiem, dokonaną przez zwroty podmiotowy i językowy, a także uznać wielość sposobów istnienia rzeczywistości (obiektywne: TO i TE/TEN oraz subiektywne: JA i MY). W konsekwencji pełna teoria języka musi przyjąć, iż język nie tylko wyraża to, co w umyśle i komunikuje innym, lecz także kształtuje ludzkie myślenie i oddziałuje na obiektywną rzeczywistość. Język w nauce jest determinowany przez kontakt społeczno-kulturowy (tradycję) oraz kontekst komunikacyjny, ale na jego kształt ma też wpływ indywidualne, podmiotowe poczucie stylowe.
The core of scientific research procedure is the intention to develop a theory. The structure of a complete theory involves three levels: philosophical (a set of a priori ontological and axiological assumptions), theoretical/methodological (most general statements and abstract concepts, conceptualizing, structuring and interpreting the fragment of the world the theory refers to) and empirical (empirical statements and concepts involving certain declarations concerning the studied objects). The philosophical foundations of contemporary theories in the humanities should involve the reinterpretation of relationships between the material world, mind and language with the use of expressions such as “subjective” and “linguistic”, and acknowledge the multiplicity of ways in which the reality may exist (objective: THIS and THESE and subjective: ME and US). As a result, the complete theory of language must assume that language does not only express what is on someone’s mind and communicates it to others, but it also shapes human thinking and affects the objective reality. Language in science is determined by the socio-cultural context (tradition) and the communication context, but it is also affected by individual, subjective stylistic sense.

The term positive linguistics implies that linguistics is joining the transdisciplinary research orientation, which examines the idea of individual and social well-being and is called positive humanities (with reference to the term positive psychology coined by A. Maslow). This idea has immemorial roots and has been taken up in various cultures, cf. universal virtues (wisdom, bravery, humanity, fairness, restraint, and spirituality) as mental and moral personality traits supported by cultural patterns, social roles and institutions as well as language. The stimuli for developing this orientation in linguistics include the disturbing situation of the contemporary world and impacts of numerous disciplines (not only within the humanities, and hence the name valeology from Latin valeo ‘to be strong, healthy, not only in the medical sense’ is proposed) and one’s own traditions related to language culture and ethics of the word. Positive linguistics is underlain by the theory of language which assumes the mutual interactive impact of the world, mind and language, and various manners in which the linguistic reality exists. Positive linguistics is interested also in such a good speech as is accompanied in various spheres and situations of the human life above all by moral responsibility assumed by individual and collective entities.

What should be considered the central problem of linguaecology is the issue of protection of language quality (its various manners of existence: language use, system as well as individual and collective linguistic awareness) against destructive human impact, in particular culture, and protection of human health (individuals and human communities) against harmful language. The ecological nature of linguistic communication is determined not only by its axiological (emotional and moral) dimension but also, and foremost, by the intention not to harm oneself and others. In order to meet the challenges of our times (from climate crisis to hate speech), we need to oppose the view that human beings are selfi sh and aggressive by nature. This view contributes to us becoming like that. However, the true human nature is different: human beings are decent, they are homo cooperans.

The author presents an outline of the comprehensive theory of style the structure of which is composed of three levels: philosophical (ontological and epistemological assumptions), theoretical and metaphorical (a network of highly abstract key notions and terms conceptualising and structuring the theoreticised world), and empirical (a set of empirical notions and statements asserting something directly about the analysed world). After philosophical ontology, it adopts the assumption of four methods of existence of the linguistic reality and, accordingly, style (which is treated as a humanistic text structure, its highest organisational rule): 1. specifi c language actions and their textual products as well as the style of a given text; 2. a language system and stylistic patterns in the standard; 3. individual language awareness and individual style; 4. language awareness of specifi c human populations and collective styles. This outline can constitute the basis for creating more developed forms of the theory.

Opis:
An inalienable property of the linguistic reality is the multi-language nature of the world and the multi-variation character of the ethnic-national communication space. As regards Polish pace, one can distinguish a series of axes around which the processes of long lasting concentrate. The author discusses the following five axes: (1) idiolectal (individual languages), (2) one determined by the dichotomy: spoken language – written language (contemporarily it assumes the form: spoken language – media language – written language), (3) one connected with the opposition: dialects – literary language (today in the form: dialects – mixed languages – general language), (4) functional variations (their ‘canonical’ series: colloquial language – scientific language – journalistic language – language of the administration – religious language – artistic language), and (5) one of three styles (high – medium – low).
