Opis:
This paper deals with the problem referred to the Early Iron Age lake settlement of the West Baltic Barrow culture and the cultural factors that affected the stilt houses among the local settlement patterns. This concept is based on the results achieved thus far for the lake settlements with a special emphasis on the sites in Mołtajny near Kętrzyn and Pieczarki near Giżycko (investigated during 1986-1992). The sites have provided the data concerning both the cultural and natural environment impact on the stilt housing Here it appears that the residents of such objects did not significantly differ from the communities that had inhabited neither fortified nor open settlements as it is reinforced by the same approach to farming and breeding strategies and similar manufacturing activities such as the bronze metalworking. Therefore the problem concerning the motives that led some groups of the West Baltic Barrow culture community to stilt housing remains still unresolved

Opis:
In designing of reinforced concrete bridges are often used pre-cast of pre-tensioned or post-tensioned prestressed members. In professional practice, when designing bridge span pre-cast of pre-tensioned prestressed beams IG type, different axial beams spacing’s are used and they are joined by a reinforced concrete slab. The paper presents a comparative analysis of an influence of the axial spacing of IG type beams in the cross-section of the bridge, on the bridge span effort, using standards PN-85/S-10042 and PN-EN 1992-2:2010. The optimal axial spacing of precast IG type beams is presented, while maintaining the standard conditions of ULS (Ultimate Limit State). Such a solution has a positive impact on the costs of the entire project, significantly lowering the global investment cost.

Opis:
“Wake up Poland” March in the Coverage of Polish Television StationsThe article presents the results of a study devoted to the methods and manners of covering the "Wake up Poland (Obudź się Polsko)" march (held in Warsaw on September 29th, 2012) in Polish TV news programs. The research has covered the major evening news ("Wydarzenia" Polsat, "Fakty" TVN, "Panorama" TVP2, "Wiadomości" TVP1,  "Informacje" TV Trwam) on the day preceding the event, then on the day when the event occurred place, and on the day after the event (28-30 September 2012), and live coverage of the event, presented in the news TV programs. The material was analyzed in six established categories: truthfulness, diligence, morality, reason of state, discrimination, and quality. In the analysis of the live coverage the researchers has used six quantitative operational criteria: (1) the number of pro et contra statements, (2) the number of affiliated and anonymous statements, (3) the diversity of contesting statements, (4) pro et contra affiliations of experts, (5) the sum of statements, (6) the number of reporters involved in the coverage. Qualitative analysis of individual evening news has included an examination of the interpretative frames used to explain the events from the point of view of various interest groups involved. This article presents the detailed methodology of the survey and its part dedicated to live coverage. The second part of the study, concerning only the evening news, will be presented in the next issue of "Zeszyty Prasoznawcze". Both texts should be considered complementary – for this reason, the discussion will be placed in the second text.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to assess the dynamics of oxidative damage to cellular macromolecules such as proteins, lipids and DNA under conditions of oxidative stress triggering early stages of estrogen-dependent carcinogenesis. A rodent model of carcinogenesis was used. Syrian hamsters were sacrificed after 1, 3, 5 h and one month from the initial implantation of estradiol. Matching control groups were used. Kidneys as target organs for estradiol-mediated oxidative stress were excised and homogenized for biochemical assays. Subcellular fractions were isolated. Carbonyl groups (as a marker of protein oxidation) and lipid hydroxyperoxides were assessed. DNA was isolated and 8-oxodGuo was assessed. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to confirm the results for lipid peroxidation. Exposition to estradiol in the rodent model leads to damage of macromolecules of the cell, including proteins and DNA, but not lipids. Proteins appear to be the primary target of the damage but are closely followed by DNA. It has previously been speculated that protein peroxides can increase DNA modifications. This time sequence was observed in our study. Nevertheless, the direct relation between protein and DNA damage still remains unsolved.
