Opis:
Salix lapponum is a relict species that occurs in peat bogs. The most numerous population in Poland, which is located on Lake Bikcze, was selected as a source of plant material for genetic analysis to check if it could be used to translocate and establish new populations in the future. For this purpose, the genetic variability of five groups of plants, which were located 50 to 130 m away from one another, was assessed using the AFLP method. GenoType software did not indicate clonal individuals in the studied population. Although the groups were located at short distances from one another, the genetic differentiation between them, expressed as ΦPT and GST coefficients, was very high and the clustering methods adopted showed the presence of genetic structure. The lack of correlation between geographic distance and pair-wise ΦPT indicated that at least in the past the gene flow was fluent, but nowadays seedling recruitment is barely visible. These results can be explained by the fact that from the beginning of the 21st century the Lake Bikcze population has dramatically decreased in size. On the other hand, the expected heterozygosity in each group is quite high. If we want to use this population as a donor of reproductive material, action should be taken as quickly as possible.

Opis:
In recent years, particular attention has been paid to enhancing the meaning of natural regeneration, which is a part of the implementation of the concept of sustainable development and is one of the pillars of the natural direction of forest silviculture. Since the middle of the last century, the contribution of natural regeneration in Poland has been steadily increasing. The paper presents the analysis of density and variability of growth traits of natural regeneration of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in south-eastern Poland. The study involved four compartments, which were prepared with the use of tiller and plough (active and double mouldboard). Density of seedlings, their height and root collar diameter, were measured. Density and growth characteristics of seedlings were higher at the tiller area and furrow compared with nonscarified soil and ridge. The highest cover with herbaceous plant was reported in ridges and non-scarified soil, but in most of the analysed compartments, it had no effect on the density of seedlings. It was found that different methods for soil preparation create different conditions for germination of seeds, which is reflected in the number of seedlings and its growth traits.

Opis:
Wykazano, że szybkość usuwania związków organicznych (ChZT) w cyklu pracy reaktora wynosiła 13,1÷18,9 gO2/(m3h), ubytek azotu amonowego następował z szybkością 5,9÷6,9 gN/(m3h), a szybkość przyrostu ilości azotanów(V) wynosiła 3,3÷4,9gN/(m3h). Uwalnianie ortofosforanów następowało w fazie napełniania i mieszania z początkową szybkością 43,2÷46,6 gP/(m3h) (stała szybkości uwalniania ortofosforanów wynosiła 0,93÷1,10 1/h), natomiast szybkość pobierania ortofosforanów – 16,8÷23,2 gP/(m3h).
The aim of this study was to assess kinetics of organic (COD), nitrogen and phosphorus compound removal from sewage by activated sludge in SBRs operating on technical scale in a winter season. Additionally, a balance of nitrogen compounds in the operating cycle of the SBR was presented. The rate of organic compounds removal in the reactor’s working cycle was 13.1–18.9 gO2/(m3h), of ammonia removal – 5.9–6.9 gN/(m3h), while the increase in nitrates was 3.3–4.9 gN/(m3h). Orthophosphates were released in the filling and mixing phase at an initial rate of 43.2–46.6 gP/(m3h) (the rate constant was 0.93–1.10 h–1). The orthophosphate storage rate was 16.8–23.2 gP/(m3h). The study demonstrated that complete ammonia oxidation occurred in the last hour of the reaction phase, which meant that the increase in the concentration of ammonia in the influent might result in an increase in the concentration of nitrogen in the effluent. On the basis of the nitrogen compounds balance in the SBR cycle, it was determined that the total amount of nitrogen removed from the sewage by denitrification and utilized for biomass synthesis was 27.02–29.62 gN/m3, while the denitrification efficiency was at the level of 67.4–75.4%.

Opis:
Objectives The aim of this study has been to assess the characteristics of acute poisoning deaths in Poland over a period of time 2009–2013. Material and Methods The analysis was based on the data obtained from the patient records stored in toxicology departments in 6 cities – Łódź, Kraków, Sosnowiec, Gdańsk, Wrocław and Poznań. Toxicological analyses were routinely performed in blood and/or urine. Major toxic substances were classified to one of the following categories: pharmaceuticals, alcohol group poisonings (ethanol and other alcohols), gases, solvents, drugs of abuse, pesticides, metals, mushrooms, others. Cases were analyzed according to the following criteria: year, age and gender of analyzed patients, toxic substance category and type of poisoning. The recorded fatal poisonings were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases. Results The record of 261 deaths were retrospectively reviewed. There were 187 males (71.64%) and 74 females (28.36%) and the male to female ratio was 2.52. Alcohol group poisonings were more frequently responsible for deaths in men compared to all poisonings, 91.1% vs. 71.6%, respectively (p < 0.05), and pharmaceutical agents were more frequently responsible for deaths in women, 47.4% vs. 28.4%, (p < 0.05). Methanol was the most common agent in the alcohol group poisonings, accounting for 43.75% (N = 49), followed by ethylene glycol, 39.29% (N = 44), and ethanol, 16.96% (N = 19). Conclusions Epidemiological profile data from investigation of poisoning deaths in Poland may be very useful for the development of preventive programs.
