Opis:
The article addresses the issue of colonial heritage in contemporary urban space of Banjul, the capital of The Gambia. The author analyses source materials that describe functioning and image of the city during British rule as well as documentation collected all along field work carried out in February 2016. In its first part the paper presents colonial and postcolonial history of the city, including main stages and factors that determined spatial development of Banjul. The principal part of the article is the description of contemporary urban space. Firstly, it consists of the analysis of the elements built during colonial period that endured until present day (figure 1 shows the scheme of colonial heritage in urban space of Banjul concerning its material and immaterial aspects), secondly, the elements that emerged after The Gambia’s decolonization in 1965. Both groups of elements are accompanied with pictures taken by the author during the field work. They present the complexity of colonial heritage in the city. Methodist Church in Banjul on Macoumba Jallows Street – formerly Dobson Street (photo 1) as well as St. Mary Catholic Church on Daniel Goddard Street – formerly Hagan Street (photo 2), are typical examples of sacred buildings from colonial period. Service buildings in the center of the Gambian capital city, built in 1890 (photo 3) and colonial buildings on Wilfried Davidson Carrol Street – formerly Picton Street (photo 4), are the instances of residential architecture. Another example of colonial building is the facade of Methodist School on Macoumba Jallows Street with characteristic stairs on both sides of the entrance (photo 6). The monument in the garden of St. Mary Anglican Church on Independence Drive (photo 5) constitutes the example of symbolic heritage. On the other hand, pictures 8 to 10 present objects built after 1965 – during postcolonial period of Gambian history: roundabout with the monument of President Jammeh, King Fahda's Mosque, the biggest port of The Gambia and one of new office buildings. Presented examples demonstrate diversity of Banjul’s urban space, where colonial as well as new elements coexist. Moreover, the analysis shows that in spite of 50 years that have passed since The Gambia’s independence, the elements of material and immaterial colonial heritage still dominate in its capital’s urban space. Figures 2 and 3 present the development of the city between 1916 and 2016. New objects, though well exposed, are seen infrequently. The authorities of independent state are capable of influencing urban space in the way that is significant only in its immaterial manner, for instance by changing urban names and functions of certain buildings. These modifications are motivated mainly politically since authorities use city’s symbolic space to manifest chosen policy lines. Replacement of material elements of colonial heritage by new ones occur less often, mainly with participation of foreign capital.

Opis:
The article discusses connections between the inscription on the UNESCO List and the increase of tourist attractiveness. It provides a brief overview of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa as well as the analysis of four case studies in Senegal: Island of Gorée, the historic town of Saint-Louis, Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary and Saloum Delta. The authors seek the answer to following questions. Can the inscription on the UNESCO List be regarded as a tourist value of a site and therefore increase its tourist attractiveness? Is the attractiveness primary (resulting from a unique value of a site) or secondary (related to the prestige of the inscription on the List)? The first part of the article focuses on UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa, particularly in West Africa. Figure 1 shows the number of African sites on the UNESCO List and the number of African signatories to the UNESCO Convention, whereas Table 1 and 2 provide more specific data concerning the UNESCO Sites in West Africa and in Senegal only. The second part of the article presents the analysis of four sites in Senegal mentioned above. It proves that connections between tourist attractiveness and inscription on the UNESCO List are considerably different in each case. The analysis of one of the most opinion-forming and influential travel guides – Lonely Planet also provides interesting insights. It shows that in case of Senegal the inscription on the UNESCO List does not always cause the increase of tourist attractiveness of a site. Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, Saloum Delta and historic town of Saint-Louis are the examples of the UNESCO sites that do not stimulate significant tourist flows. Saloum Delta attracts tourists due to its natural rather than cultural values (indicated by the UNESCO). Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary encounters many difficulties both economic and natural and as a result was added to the List of World Heritage in Danger (in 1984 and than again in 2000). Furthermore, its infrastructure is damaged and tourist flows are insignificant. Historic town of Saint-Louis could become a dominant tourist attraction in Senegal, however decades of ineffective policies led to a situation in which the potential of the site is not fully used. Island of Gorée is an example of well managed and frequently visited tourist attraction. However, there are many controversies concerning its actual, historical significance in the Atlantic Slave Trade that undermine its inscription on the UNESCO List. Not only do the authors highlight touristic potential of Senegal but also indicate many challenges in front of both national authorities and the UNESCO representatives.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to indicate the features of contemporary urban agriculture present in the contiguously built-up areas of Havana. Using an exploratory and classification approach, the authors draw on fieldwork and a prior analysis of satellite and aerial imagery, first to characterize the spatial distribution of urban gardens and then to point to their main intrinsic features, including the methods and organization of production and the functions performed. The research conducted shows that urban agriculture is distributed across the city in an uneven fashion, with the main concentration in districts of lower-density urban construction, which reflects the availability of land resources intentionally left between buildings by modernist planners. The most common production technique applied is organopónico, or organoponics. However, the material commonly used to construct the bordering walls is asbestos, which may pose a significant threat for both producers and consumers. Two case studies are analyzed to exemplify different approaches to organic food production.

We studied ultrathin layers of n-cyanobiphenyl (n=5,6,7,8) mesogene molecules forming thin films on a graphene plane using molecular dynamics simulations in a wide temperature range (220–420K). Each modeled ensemble was heated to the maximum temperature and then cooled (reverse procedure). We calculated the second rank order parameter as a measure of the molecular order of mesogene molecules and we discuss the distribution of angles between them and the global sample director.

Opis:
The standard of living of the citizens of different countries is mostly identified with the level of gross domestic product (GDP), nominal and per capita. In the public sphere, on the other hand, there is talk of ‘socio-economic’ development, supposedly reflected in the economic indicators mentioned above. The conviction of the universality of these two measures, as well as the equalization of social and economic development, is becoming an increasingly frequent basis for the criticism of GDP as a measure of national wellbeing. However, what is the true relationship between GDP and level of citizens’ happiness? This issue is considered by the authors.
Zagadnienie to stanowi przedmiot rozważań autorów
