Opis:: Group of steel balls with different chemical composition, diameters and nitriding treatment parameters were investigated with using magnetic resonance and magnetization methods. Emerging nitrided regions consists of diffusion and surface layer of iron nitrides. The thickness of the individual layers depends on the type of steel and process parameters. Resonance signal shape and position were successfully described in the ferromagnetic resonance regime expected for dense iron magnetic system. Influence of the sample size, thermal treatment and carbon content on the absorption signal has been analyzed. Significant magnetic anisotropy has been revealed, as well as non-usual increasing of the magnetization as a function of temperature. It suggests, that overall antiferromagnetic ordering, destroyed by thermal movement, lead to increasing of the ferromagnetic region.

Opis:: Only reliable analytical results can serve as a basis of meaningful evaluation and protection of the environment against radioactive contaminants. So, laboratories dealing with the environmental radioactivity determinations should regularly demonstrate their ability to produce acceptable results. Since 2002, every two years organization of national interlaboratory comparisons (ILC) on the determination of different radionuclides in food and environmental samples is required by the Polish law. The aim of the paper is presentation how test materials applied in the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT, Warsaw, Poland) for the 2004 ILC on the determination of 137Cs and 90Sr in water, food and soil were prepared.

Opis:: This paper presents the approach of conducting proficiency tests (PT) on the determination of radionuclides in food and environmental samples adopted by the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT), Warsaw, Poland and the results of the provided PTs. The PTs have been organized by the National Atomic Energy Agency (NAEA), Poland, since 2004. The activity of the following radionuclides: 241Am, 137Cs, 3H, 239Pu, 226Ra and 90Sr were determined. The test materials: water, milk powder, wheat flour and soil, were prepared by spiking blank materials with standard solution of the radionuclide of interest. The activity concentrations were calculated and associated uncertainties were evaluated before sending the test materials to the laboratories. The results provided by the participants were statistically evaluated by means of z and zeta scores as well as using the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) criteria for trueness and precision. Observed trends and some benefits for the participants have been presented.
