Opis:
The excessive focus on entertainment in the content of the modern mass media has become the subject of academic reflection in Poland over the last decade. In the West this issue has been discussed for at least thirty years. Out of the various concepts that serve the purpose of describing and analyzing the focus on entertainment in the mass media the author focuses on the concept of infotainment, borrowed from American English; the meaning and scope of this concept in academic and journalistic texts is analyzed. It is indicated that the concept has a limited explanatory value when taken over without its cultural and linguistic context, and it is particularly useless as the name of a genre, used instead of the news. Discussing contemporary academic reflections on the focus on entertainment in the mass media and their content, three main currents are indicated and briefly described: the functional, historical and critically-discursive; the issue of the focus on entertainment of professional journalists is also addressed.

Opis:
Six out of seven competing Polish political parties had their official fan page on Facebook (RPP, PSL, PJN – open access, PO, PiS, SLD – restricted access). These fan pages mostly attracted the parties’ supporters who were not interested in a problem-oriented political debate, but in their self-presentation among friends and acquaintances. The main objective was to be seen by others as involved in the public activity of one’s party - the activity inspired by the instigators themselves. The posts on Facebook – in their majority inspired by site administrators – represent a moderate, popular but polite and emotionally positive trend in the Internet-based political discourse.

Opis:
This paper analyses the broadcasting of unprecedented news about Pope Benedict XVI abdication by ‘Fakty’, the main news service of the most popular Polish commercial TV channel - TVN. ‘Papal news’ in this case can be regarded as a typical developing news story, pursued for over a month. The article examines in detail news broadcast between February 11 and March 13, 2013, with particular reference to: Vatican exhibition themes in services, duration of news about the Pope, content of verbal and iconic aspect, selection of the experts and behaviour of journalists both in the studio and in the centre of events. Although the presentation of the Pope’s abdication could be framed and understood as a specific type of religious and political media event (and was framed as such especially by two competing stations: TVP1 and TVN), framework analysis has shown that in the case of “papal news” it was extremely difficult for commercial TV channel to employ the usual methods of framing: e.g. framing primarily as a conflict, but also as human story, due to its consequences and moral questions involved.

Opis:
This paper provides insights into the relationship between language and politically relevant aspects of culture in India and China which are as follows: attitude toward revolution and tradition, the domination of politics over religion or vice versa, and a concern for the liberty of the individual. The paper introduces a novel approach to the comparative study of civilizations by advancing the political-linguistic explanation. In so doing, it combines Hajime Nakamura’s hypothesis of the strict connection between language and culture (understood as a way of thinking) with Samuel P. Huntington’s emphasis on the impact of cultural differences on the political dimension of society – so that our explanatory model can be expressed as follows: language→culture→politics. As far as language is concerned, the focus is on the basic structure of Sanskrit and Chinese; besides, special attention is given to Indian and Chinese philosophies of language. Culturally, the most relevant schools of Hindu philosophy may be called “ultraconservative” since they tend to ground unchanging meaning firmly in metaphysics and rely on the supreme authority of ancient religious texts. In contrast, the Chinese typically considered language a social mechanism for shaping our behavior (so the relation of language and society is the most crucial); they also expressed clearly divergent views on naming. In short, at least four distinctive perspectives are essential: (1) conservative Confucianism, (2) anti-traditional and highly authoritarian Legalism, (3) egalitarian and linguistically skeptical Laozian Daoism, (4) nonconformist and proto-libertarian Zhuangzian Daoism.
