Opis:
John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc. is mandated to offer aquatic-sports courses such as paddling, rowing, sailing, and swimming to equip students with needed skills essential for survival in case of emergencies. Since, there is a dearth of instructional materials in Physical Education 2 (Advanced Swimming and Life-saving Techniques), the JBLFMU-Arevalo was given a research grant by the CHED (Commission on Higher Education) known as DARE TO (Discovery Applied Research and Extension Trans/Inter-Disciplinary Opportunities) to address the problem. This DARE TO grant aimed to develop instructional materials in PE 2 that will enhance the swimming performance and life-saving techniques of students. That is why the researchers would like to test for the effectiveness of this instructional material in the form of modules over the traditional approach which is lecture in improving the students’ swimming performance and life-saving techniques in terms of their knowledge and skills. This non-equivalent control group under quasi-experimental study was utilized among the BSMT (Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation) students. A pretest was used to determine swimming performance of the experimental and control groups. An intervention through the use of instructional materials was employed in the experimental group for the whole semester (five months) while the control group was exposed to lecture as a traditional method of instruction. After a semester, the posttest was administered. The statistical tools used were mean, standard deviation, Mann-Whitney test, and Wilcoxon-signed ranks test. The findings of the study revealed that the instructional material is effective in enhancing the swimming performance and life-saving techniques of students both in the aspects of knowledge and skills. Both the experimental and control groups were “Fair” in their knowledge pretest scores but during the posttest, the experimental group was “Good” and the control group was “Fair”. On the other hand, both the experimental and control groups were “Fair” in their skills’ pretest scores but during their posttest, the control group was “Good” while the experimental group was “Excellent”. The experimental group who used the module showed significantly better performance during the posttest both for knowledge and skills compared to the control group who did not use the module (lecture only). The study further showed significant differences in the mean gains between the experimental and control groups after the conduct of pretest and posttest in favor of the experimental group. It can be gleaned from the results that the module can enhance the knowledge and skills in swimming performance and life-saving techniques of the experimental group. It is highly recommended that this module be utilized among maritime schools offering swimming and life-saving courses.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Since the characteristic of chronic non-specific lumbar dysfunction presents a high prevalence and morbidity, and that there are still conflicting results with the use of photobiomodulation, the aim of this study was to analyze the effect of photobiomodulation application in patients with chronic non-specific lombalgy. Materials and method. A quantitative, experimental, randomized study composed of 21 volunteers randomly separated into two groups: 1) the intervention group (IG), who were given an application of photobiomodulation (LED (617nm ±10%, 1,500 mW) and low-level laser therapy (830nm, 150 mW, beam area 12.57mm), combined energy of 8.4 J per area for one minute in four different locations: in regions of greatest pain referred to palpation, on a bilateral basis, area of the applicator – 23,8 cm2). 2) the control group (CG), in which the device remained switched-off during therapy. All subjects were evaluated by McGill and Roland Morris questionnaires before and at the end of 6 interventions (3 weeks). Results. For both McGill and Roland Morris total pain rates, there was no inter-group interaction or interaction between evaluation and group (p>0.05). In the comparison between evaluations (before and after), there was a significant difference (p<0.001). Conclusions. The use of photobiomodulation in these parameters in young patients with chronic non-specific lombalgy, was not more effective than the placebo for the relief of painful symptoms. Nor did it promote a decrease in the repercussion of lombalgy in the performance of daily activities.

Opis:
The shear strength of sand and its mechanical properties can be affected by numerous parameters. This work presents an experimental investigation which aims to study the influence of the fines content, the depositional method and the grain size on the shear strength of Chlef sand. Tests were conducted with the shear box on two types of soil, the natural sand and the clean sand-silt mixture. Dense samples (Dr = 88%) were reconstituted through dry deposition for each type of the material. An additional series of tests was carried out on a medium dense natural sand (Dr = 52%) prepared by dry and wet (w = 3%) deposition methods. All specimens were subjected to normal stresses of 100 kPa, 200 kPa and 300 kPa and there was no immersion of water. The tests results show that the behavior of sand can be affected by three parameters, the fines content, the deposition method and the particle size. The maximum shear stress and the friction angle decrease as the fines content increases, the initial water content increases, the effective grain size diameter decreases and the uniformity coefficient increases. The cohesion intercept increases with the increasing fines content and decreasing initial water content. Overall, the samples prepared by the dry deposition method show more resistance than those prepared by the wet deposition method. The results obtained are generally in agreement with the previous research on drained and undrained saturated sand in the literature.

Opis:
In this paper we propose right-angled Artin groups as a platform for secret sharing schemes based on the efficiency (linear time) of the word problem. Inspired by previous work of Grigoriev-Shpilrain in the context of graphs, we define two new problems: Subgroup Isomorphism Problem and Group Homomorphism Problem. Based on them, we also propose two new authentication schemes. For right-angled Artin groups, the Group Homomorphism and Graph Homomorphism problems are equivalent, and the later is known to be NP-complete. In the case of the Subgroup Isomorphism problem, we bring some results due to Bridson who shows there are right-angled Artin groups in which this problem is unsolvable.

Opis:
The phenomenon of the Anderson localization of waves in elastic systems is studied. We analyze this phenomenon in two different sets of systems: disordered linear chains of harmonic oscillators and disordered rods which oscillate with torsional waves. The first set is analyzed numerically whereas the second one is studied both experimentally and theoretically. In particular, we discuss the localization properties of the waves as a function of the frequency. In doing that we have used the inverse participation ratio, which is related to the localization length. We find that the normal modes localize exponentially according to the Anderson theory. In the elastic systems, the localization length decreases with frequency. This behavior is in contrast with what happens in analogous quantum mechanical systems, for which the localization length grows with energy. This difference is explained by means of the properties of the reflection coefficient of a single scatterer in each case.
