    The aim of the present article was to conduct a primary analysis of a style/styles of a modern self-help manual (particularly in the form of a book), which analysis would take into consideration the following detailed problems: a handbook versus typical styles, the stylistic component of the handbook model, the style of a handbook and/versus the “handbook-like” style, the style of handbook texts. The observations presented here should be perceived as a fragment of a broader project which focused on recreating a model (a pattern) of the genre and its textual realisations. The analyses were conducted in line with the paradigms of linguistic genology and stylistics. The subject was selected on the basis of an assumption pertaining to the uncertain discursive status of handbooks – being now an expansive, polymorphic and transgressive form of discourse, which spreads its features to other genre forms. Uncertain remains the stylistic affiliation of this form of utterance, recognised by receivers/readers. Within the handbook sphere (no matter what genre it represents), one may introduce indicators of numerous styles and language variants. Specialist fields of science (law, Information Technology, medicine, etc.) impose their own, more or less hermetic ‘language’ on genre actualisations. Language styles are represented not only by verbal codes. In the case of handbooks, equally important is the image code – a picture, chart, or in a broader sense: a graphic shape of the text (a book). The review of textual empiricism should also be extended by stylistic distinctiveness which arises from individual preferences and traits of the author of discourse.

    Assuming a close connection between memory, style and trauma, the author has focused on auto-description of personal experiences, retrospective thoughts, etc. referring to the difficult/traumatic experiences of an individual present in Grażyna Jagielska’s books (cf. the following titles: Miłość z kamienia. Życie z korespondentem wojennym, Kraków 2013; Anioły jedzą trzy razy dziennie. 147 dni w psychiatryku, Kraków 2014; Ona wraca na dobre. Podróż terapeutyczna, Kraków 2015). The actual analyses of the source material were preceded by an approximation of the genealogy of the trauma, its definition or possible representations, as well as by the discussion of the scientific (including humanistic) evolutions of the interest in critical incidents or their consequences. Moreover, an important point of the considerations was also the question concerning the possibility of a linguistic/discursive approach to the subject issues. As follows from the analytical part of the paper, painful traces of the past are present at various levels of the reviewed (and biographically burdened) texts. The points where the categories mentioned in the sketch title meet are related to the narrative technique, style of expressionand repertoire of symbols used by Grażyna Jagielska, with selected components of the presented world, as well as with the creation of the subject (subjected to unintentional victimisation and aiming to, among other things, explain internal conflicts). Although certain therapeutic values can be assigned to memories, the researcher is of the opinion that the textual updates considered often go beyond this simplified qualification.

    The basie topie of the considerations shown in the article are strategies subordinated to the impressive function, their essence being stimulating a reader's attention, awakening a reader's interest in the message and achieving the assumed therapeutic and didactic results. The research comprised positions that hit best the readers' needs and are records of a specific type of communication and hence an interesting object oflinguistic observation - handbooks dealing with sexology (intimate handbooks), psychology (motivational handbooks) and computer science (computer handbooks). In the author's opinion, the contents of a handbook can be - as a subjective act- a pretext for a sender to show himself; on the other hand, it is a medium through which an addressee can be subject to various stimuli (persuasive intentions: intra- and extra textual). The presented methods of gaining readers are manifested in distinct (and prevailing in the gathered materiał) tendencies to (I) make the reception of the message easy; (2) improve the communication of the message; and (3) expose the dialogue nature of the text, which is, in fact, a monologue.

    The Author of this article departs from the assumption that the current public debate is filled with varied social, cultural and communicative phenomena.     Przedmiotem artykułu są mechanizmy i wybrane gramatyczno-leksykalne środki perswazji językowej dominujące w narracjach wspomnieniowych świadków powstania warszawskiego. Materiał badawczy stanowi ponad 3400 wywiadów utrwalonych w postaci transkrypcji i opracowanych w ramach projektu pn. Archiwum Historii Mówionej Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego. Teoretyczno-metodologiczne zaplecze analiz to założenia lingwistyki pamięci, czerpiącej m.in. z ustaleń stylistyki i retoryki, oraz lingwistyki korpusowej. W analizach skorzystano również z rozróżnienia mechanizmów, za pomocą których realizuje się funkcja perswazyjna, autorstwa Stanisława Barańczaka. Przeprowadzone badania, wypełniające lukę w dociekaniach sprofilowanych pamięcioznawczo pozwalają stwierdzić, że narracja historyczna może być postrzegana jako struktura retoryczna, a poznanie przeszłości polega na jej konstruowaniu, w czym decydującą rolę odgrywa język.
    The article focuses on the mechanisms and selected grammatical and lexical means of linguistic persuasion prevailing in reminiscent narratives of the Warsaw Uprising witnesses. The research material comprises over 3,400 interview transcripts developed as part of the project entitled the Oral History Archive of the Warsaw Uprising Museum. The analyses’ theoretical and methodological background constitutes, in turn, the assumptions of memory linguistics drawing, inter alia, from the findings of stylistics and rhetoric as well as corpus linguistics. The analyses also took advantage of the distinction of mechanisms used to fulfil the persuasive function, by Stanisław Barańczak. The research conducted, which fills the gap in the investigations profiled in terms of memory allows us to conclude that the historical narrative can be perceived as a rhetorical structure, and learning about the past consists in constructing the past, where a decisive role is played by the language.

    The authors of the article present the results of (quantitative and qualitative) research on narrative interviews from the Oral History Archive – more precisely: memories of the Warsaw Uprising witnesses (its active participants). The main subject of the analyses, which align with the trends of reflections on the phenomenon of studies on social archives and follow the premises of memory linguistics, are the elements of the lexical level, i.e. collocations of the possessive pronouns mój, nasz (my, ours). In the discourse on the events of August 1944, they can be considered to be some of the significant determinants of individual and/or collective identities of the subjects. The search for answers to the questions about how the identity of the Warsaw Uprising participants is revealed at the level of selected biographical narrations, whatelements dominate there and how it is determined, allows for drawing some conclusions, including the final one: despite the expected predominance of individual identity (and personal views of the past), the examined relationships show a strong expansion of the sense of community which is evident even in the areas that fall within the domain of individual memory.

    Przedmiotem artykułu są sposoby społecznego modelowania i negocjowania znaczeń leksemów maseczka oraz maska, występujących w wypowiedziach przeciwników obostrzeń sanitarnych związanych z pandemią Covid-19. Materiał badawczy stanowią komentarze zamieszczane na oficjalnym facebookowym profilu Ministerstwa Zdrowia (jako przestrzeni neutralnej, potencjalnie otwartej dla przedstawicieli różnych wspólnot dyskursywnych) od kwietnia do maja 2020 roku. Teoretyczny, a także metodologiczny punkt odniesienia analiz wyznaczają z kolei lingwistyczne badania nad dyskursem; w celu pełniejszego ujęcia walk semantycznych czy walk wartości toczących się w zajmującym autorki opracowania dyskursie skorzystano również z pewnych ustaleń lingwistyki korpusowej i genologii internetowej. Szczegółowy ogląd wybranych kolokacji wskazanych jednostek (maseczki i maski), ich tekstowych ekwiwalentów, naddatków semantycznych (znaczeń asocjacyjnych, ekspresywnych) oraz profili znaczeniowych ujawniających się w konkretnych tekstach pozwala stwierdzić, że leksemy te stały się nasemantyzowanymi symbolami, dla przeciwników reżimu sanitarnego mającymi konotacje jednoznacznie pejoratywne. Można je ponadto uznać za słowa sztandarowe współkształtujące dyskursywny obraz świata pandemii.

    The article presents a research project on linguistically profiled (quantitative and qualitative) analyses of the (sub)space of pandemic-related discourses, as well as the corpus of Polish texts concerning the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic that broke out in 2020, prepared for analytical purposes. The authors describe the following: 1. the reasons for the interest in this issue, the subject and purpose of the research and the research theoretical and methodological background -- discourse linguistics (mainly from the perspective of Jürgen Spizmüller and Ingo Warnke); 2. source material of the project (mainly individual/non-institutional Internet statements that constitute the basis for the shaping of specific systems of meaning, i.e. comments posted under posts on Facebook or Twitter and the dialogical relations among them); 3. problems related to the development of the pandemic discourses corpus (criteria for the selection of texts, methods of the corpus balancing, categories of metadata that shall be used for the material description); 4. conclusions drawn from an exemplary analytical procedure where a section of the corpus was used; 5. the potential of the above-mentioned research and possible applications of the research results.

    Overweight or obesity which often develop in athletes who end their careers is one of the most important issues of the world of sport. During aging, an increase in the amount of intra-abdominal fat is observed; this fat increases the risk of such metabolic disease as diabetes or hypertension. The participants of the study were 94 males. The people were randomly assigned to one of 2 groups: group 1 – people using the diet based on calorie restriction CRON (n = 32), and group 2 – those who followed the recommendations of the Mediterranean diet (n = 34). The patients who at the check-up declared not following any diet were assigned to the control group (n = 28). A change in parameters was observed in each of the sub-groups after the intervention. The most significant changes were observed in the sub-group which lost >2.6 kg. Both the diet based on mild calorie restriction and the Mediterranean diet had positive effect on the change of the former athlete’s body parameters after the 6-week long dietary intervention. Both diets which were being tested changed the body composition of the athletes who ended their careers in a similar way.
