Opis:
Noise mapping is based on long-term noise indicators, such as LN or LDEN. On the other hand, transportation intensity changes during a day (road traffic peak hours) or a year (more flights during holidays) and this variability is not reflected in single sound level values. We wanted to find out whether not only sound level but also the number of noise events is the factor influencing noise annoyance assessment. Ambisonic recordings of real traffic in a city were used. Road, tramway, and aircraft traffic were investigated and two factors were manipulated: the equivalent sound level value and the number of noise events. All stimuli were presented in an anechoic chamber. The results showed that sound level is always a statistically significant parameter while the number of events has an impact only for tramways and airplanes. Moreover, the difference is observed only between one or more subgroups, no matter what the sound level value was. For road traffic this relation was not found to be statistically significant. It was also shown that the existence of tramway bonus or airplane malus is linked with the number of noise events.

Opis:
The development of the Internet of things and automatisation in everyday life also influences our houses. There are more and more devices on the market which can be controlled remotely. One kind of such control involves the use of voice signals. This method tends to use microphone arrays and dedicated algorithms to enhance the speech signal and recognize the words in it. In this project, a small 5-microphone array was developed. To enhance the quality of the signal, dedicated software was written. It consists of several modules, including the direction of arrival estimation, denoising, and differentiation between adults and children. The results showed that the custom algorithm can increase the signal to noise ratio by up to 6 dB.

Opis:
Annoyance due to wind turbine noise is usually assessed on the basis of surveys conducted among people living in the vicinity of turbines or in the laboratory conditions. Due to the fact that the latter are very different from natural conditions, we propose a solution to reduce this difference. Prior to the surveys, 50 participants were asked to familiarize themselves with 5 environmental signals. They were informed about the annoyance rating assigned to each signal (obtained earlier in laboratory conditions), expressed as a number between 0 (not annoying signal) and 10 (extremely annoying signal). Participants were then presented with new environmental sounds and asked to rate the annoyance caused by each sound, in accordance with the previously learned method. The analysis of our results shows that the variability of answers given by respondents at their homes is similar to those obtained earlier in laboratory conditions.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to examine how the wording of a question about audio, visual and audiovisual stimuli can affect the assessment of the environment. The participants of the psychophysical experiments were asked to rate, on a numerical scale, audio and visual information both separately and together, combined into mixes. A set of questions was used for all the investigated audio, visual, and audio-visual stimuli. The participants were asked about the comfort or the discomfort caused by the perceived stimuli presented at three different sound levels. The results show that there are no statistically significant differences between the assessment of comfort and discomfort associated with visual samples. Actually, the comfort and discomfort ratings are equivalent to the extent that a discomfort rating can be represented as the opposite to the comfort rating, i.e. the discomfort rating is equal to the 10 minus comfort rating. In general, the results obtained for audio and audio-visual samples were the same, with only a few exceptions that were dependent on sound level. No statistically significant differences were found for the loudest stimuli, but there were some exceptions for the softener cases. Based on the results, we show that only for visual stimuli both scales are totally interchangeable. When presenting audio and audio-visual samples, only one scale should be applied – either discomfort or comfort, depending on the context and the character of the stimuli.

ANNEX III
number of people affected by noise
Annex III
narażenie na hałas
Opis:
European Union Directive 2002/49/EC relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise (named as END) in article 6 paragraph 3 states that “harmful effects may be assessed by means of dose-effect relations referred to in ANNEX III”. In this still unfinished ANNEX III there are formulas which present how to calculate the number of people affected by a given noise. The dose-effect relations have been recently presented in WHO document “Environmental Noise Guidelines for the European Region”. These Guidelines allow to predict the percentage of people who will be affected by a specific kind of noise. E.g. it is shown how to calculate the percentage of highly annoyed people for a given value of noise index, Lden. In our paper we propose how to calculate the total number of people affected by noise in their living conditions and discuss the implementation of methods recommended in ANNEX III in Poland.
