    Opis:
    Over the past two decades there has been a growing body of evidence, clinical and anecdotal, that equine-facilitated therapy (EFT) is a powerful tool for social workers and mental health clinicians. Recent research studies have begun to identify, name, and explain the mechanisms of EFT as a treatment tool for individual clients. However, EFT lacks a unified theoretical foundation; many studies lack an explicit theory altogether. Strong empirical support begins with a strong theoretical foundation, the research field lacks a unified voice for the scientific value of EFT. Attachment theory can guide the understanding of how EFT operates and can support more rigorous inquiry to evaluate its effect in mental health treatment. This article reviews the human-horse relationship in the context of attachment theory and concludes with a recommendation for research to strengthen the empirical base of EFT in social work practice.

    The profession of social work is dedicated to the betterment of society and to the protection of marginalized and vulnerable groups. The profession’s mission is detailed in the set of seven core values: service; social justice; dignity and work of the person; importance of human relationships; integrity; and competence. Relationships between people and among groups are the primary tools of social work assessment, intervention and evaluation. In the time of coronavirus and COVID-19, there are many challenges for professional practitioners to adhere to social work’s core values as well as to maintain their own health and welfare in a time of uncertain and rapidly changing situations. This paper will examine the challenges and innovations for each social work core value and present ideas for innovation and adaptation suited to these times. The paper will present challenges and innovations using examples of two community agencies providing services to people who are homeless and addicted. In summary we will offer some insights and expectations for the future of social work in the coming years, after this experience of coronavirus and COVID-19.

    The objective is to examine the intersection of advocacy for social change, the individual’s emotional costs of advocacy, and the use of trauma informed care in supervisory practice to encourage and support advocates and their work.  Supervision models exist, but none address the needs of advocates who might become targets for scorn and persecution. The literature on trauma informed care provides a direction to improve the support and supervision of advocates, especially those who use their personal experiences as examples in their work. We reviewed data bases and relevant literature regarding supervision and the principles of trauma informed care.  Periodical literature was reviewed for examples of those affected personally and professionally by their advocacy efforts. Review of the literature revealed little new knowledge on supervision but provided a base to apply the principles of trauma informed care to support and encourage advocacy for social change. This paper suggests the use of trauma informed care in supervisory relationships and advocacy work. This is an original approach to encourage and uphold advocates in difficult times.

    Opis:
    Social work in Poland and in the United States shares the values of human dignity and self-determination, but there are often value conflicts in terms of how various groups experience social roles and social expectations. This paper explores the use of multiple lenses to understand the past and current conditions for LGBT+ people in Poland. An international, university-level collaboration uses a framework of “invisible groups” to highlight the needs of those who are on the margins of society and whose human and individual rights are suppressed. The article reviews the results of a recently published on-line survey of LGBT+ populations and their views of their experiences in Polish society to illustrate their “invisibility” and the need for advocacy from the international social work community.

    This article examines sociological, psychological, and suicidological research on the determinants of male suicide to explore the fact that Polish men complete suicide 7.4 times more than women, a frequency twice as high as in the US. This paper is based upon an examination of relevant literature and statistical databases. A keyword search was completed in both Polish and English language databases. Ideals of masculinity and negative social attitudes towards a non-binary view of gender may increase stressors and discourage men in Poland from revealing their problems while seeking support, explaining the high rates of suicide completion among Polish men. Suicide prevention programs must tackle gender conceptualizations and alcohol use patterns as well as increase avenues for male help-seeking behaviors. These changes will require political and religious organizations to confront the weakening of male hegemony as the organizing principle for family and society. This paper explores the increased rate of male suicide in Poland from the perspective of gender.

    In the face of a global pandemic, domesticated and companion animals are relegated to the most vulnerable stratification of society. Companion animals (pets) have been established as family members in a wide breath of cultures globally; thereby ensuring reliance on humans for maintaining care and wellbeing. Furthermore, those on social media are sharing animal stories, photos, memes, and videos as a mechanism of distraction, enjoyment, and humor. Animals are becoming the force to bring humanity together through crisis, and yet, they require human care and compassion. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the world was confronted with three pertinent questions: 1. How do individuals provide physical and emotional care and enrichment for pets during a pandemic? 2. Are there zoonotic concerns in caring for a pet? 3. What are the mid- and long-term repercussions of the pandemic for pet care? To address these questions, this paper identifies avenues of support, and challenges that can be addressed in the midst of the pandemic to advance and ensure companion animal welfare. This is the moment we collectively challenge the notion of companion animals as family members and the importance of these very animals in our lives.

    This article presents a detailed history of the development of a particular immersion program to teach English to young Polish students. The program draws support from two organizations, the Kościuszko Foundation and the Polish Scouting Organization. Kościuszko Foundation is dedicated to strengthening the ties between the United States and Poland as well as to increase knowledge of Poland’s history and culture in the United States. The cooperation of these two organizations developed an experience of immersion in language and cultural exchange. Both the teachers and the students in this program benefited from the opportunity to engage in a number of different types of language activities and cultural events through a summer camp experience. This program is, of course, unique, but the elements of context, culture and immersion could be used in other programs to develop English skills and knowledge in the context American culture.

    Social work deals with problems of individuals, families, organizations and communities. However, an evolving set of challenges continues to shape the future of social work theory, research and interventions. Social work is a profession with its own code and follows a set of standards and ethics rules at the federal level, but the licensing processes are controlled at the state level and the professional policies are set at the national and local level. Social workers, therefore, are trained to think in a systemic way and to work with a person-in-environment perspective at the individual and the community level. This text shows how the challenges of the twenty-first century impact the education of social workers as well as social work practice. The economy and globalization present a number of challenges – all of which contribute to creation of new social problems and need for social innovation. New technologies have opened the door for educational and clinical opportunities to connect and engage people in need, however, the digitalization excluded a group of people with a low income. Social work education must keep up with the pressures of the economic aspects influencing the education market and the growing evidence base to support trauma-informed care, the use of psychiatric rehabilitation, prevent bullying at schools and cyberspace, care for elderly and the constant changes ushered in by modernization and globalization. The implications of these challenges are reviewed and provide guidance for social work educators, social work students and social work practitioners.

    Pracownicy socjalni zajmują się problemami poszczególnych ludzi, ich rodzin, organizacji i społeczności. Jednakże wyzwania współczesności wymuszają zmiany w założeniach teoretycznych, charakterze badań i praktyce zawodu. Praca socjalna w Stanach Zjednoczonych jest skodyfikowaną profesją z określonym na poziomie federalnym zestawem standardów i zasad etycznych, z licencją uzyskiwaną na poziomie stanowym i polityką zawodową definiowaną na poziomie krajowym i lokalnym. Dzięki temu pracownicy socjalni mogą być przygotowani do myślenia systemowego i do pracy z „człowiekiem w jego środowisku” na poziomie jednostki i zbiorowości. W artykule prześledzimy, jak wyzwania XXI wieku wpływają na nauczanie zawodu i na praktykę pracy socjalnej. Zarówno ekonomia, jak i globalizacja stwarzają nowe wyzwania wyrażające się w nowych problemach społecznych. Nowe technologie cyfrowe przyczyniają się do tworzenia nowych edukacyjnych i klinicznych możliwości kontaktu z człowiekiem, chociaż ze względu na swoją cenę technologie wykluczyły grupę ludzi o niskich dochodach („podział cyfrowy”). Nauczanie pracy socjalnej musi poradzić sobie zarówno z presją ekonomicznych uwarunkowań na rynku edukacji, jak i z osiągnięciami badań empirycznych w takich dziedzinach, jak leczenie zorientowane na traumę, zdrowienie psychiczne, zapobieganie znęcaniu się, troska o osoby starsze oraz z wszelkimi innymi zmianami, będącymi skutkiem nowoczesności i globalizacji. W artykule przedstawiono współczesne wyzwania, jakie stoją przed pracą socjalną i ich znaczenie w życiu zawodowym studentów i praktyków.

    Autorzy artykułu opisują, w jaki sposób w placówkach ochrony zdrowia przeprowadzana jest terapia zorientowana na traumę. Omawiają podstawowe definicje traumy, badania dotyczące traumatycznych przeżyć i ich wpływ na stan zdrowia społeczeństwa czy korelację między występowaniem traumatycznych doświadczeń w dzieciństwie (ACE) a stanem zdrowia w późniejszym wieku. Wskazują, że w każdej placówce medycznej powinno się także stworzyć organizacyjną strukturę zorientowaną na traumę oraz przedstawiają, według jakich zasad takie miejsca powinny funkcjonować. Zwracają uwagę na uwzględnianie traumy w programach leczenia uzależnień, różnice między systemem leczenia a technikami terapeutycznymi oraz na dopasowanie odpowiednich technik leczenia, m.in. superwizji, do pacjentów z różnie sklasyfikowanymi traumami np. z PTSD czy weteranów wojskowych.
