Success in the labor market requires to gain of professional qualifications and their updating. This process should last a lifetime and can take the form of formal and non-formal education. It is particularly important in the case of professions whose help other people, i.a. social workers. The presented article is an attempt to show the role of education in the process of professionalization of social workers. The article presents also forms of formal and non-formal education among social workers in the Podkarpackie Province.

The main aim of social system is to reduce poverty and minimizing social problems. The adequate social infrastructure and human resources are necessary to accomplish this goal. One of the most important group among social services are social workers. The quality of their work has strong influence on the effectiveness of the social assistance system. The article presents the results of a survey conducted among 378 social workers from the Podkarpacie Province. The results of empirical research has identified some conditions of the profession of social workers. The article is also an attempt to identify the level of burnout among social workers in Podkarpacie Province.

Praca zawodowa pełni ważną rolę w życiu każdego człowieka. Szczególnego znaczenia nabiera jednak w przypadku osób zagrożonych wykluczeniem społecznym. Jedną z takich grup w Polsce są osoby niepełnosprawne. Celem artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie jaka jest rola wykształcenia i kwalifikacji zawodowych oraz stanu zdrowia w procesie aktywizacji zawodowej osób niepełnosprawnych oraz czy polityka publiczna ukierunkowana na osoby niepełnosprawne w Polsce jest efektywna. Z przeprowadzonych analiz wynika, że wykształcenie i kwalifikacje zawodowe pełnią kluczową rolę w procesie aktywizacji zawodowej osób niepełnosprawnych w Polsce. Wyższy poziom kwalifikacji zawodowych może zrekompensować osobom niepełnosprawnym niższą produktywność wywołaną przez dysfunkcję zdrowotną. Polityka publiczna w Polsce w latach 1993–2015 ukierunkowana na osoby niepełnosprawne była nieefektywna, gdyż nie przyczyniła się do zwiększenia poziomu aktywności zawodowej i zatrudnienia osób niepełnosprawnych na rynku pracy.
The professional work plays an important role in the life of every man. However professional work gain special importance for people who are at risk of social exclusion. One of those group in Poland are disabled people. The article is an attempt to find out what is the role of level of education and health in professional work activation of disabled people. Second aim of the article is to answer the question if the public policy aimed to disabled people in Poland is effective. Analyses show that the level of education and professional qualifications play a key role in the professional work activation of disabled people. A higher level of education can compensate disabled people the lower productivity caused by the dysfunction health. In the years 1993–2015 public policy in Poland aimed to disabled people was inefficient because it did not increase the level of economic activity and employment of disabled people in the labor market.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie struktury wybranych świadczeń - pieniężnych lub niepieniężnych - w systemie pomocy społecznej oraz zidentyfikowanie kluczowych w Polsce trendów w tym obszarze w latach 2012-2018. Przeprowadzone na potrzeby artykułu analizy sygnalizują, że zapowiedź odejścia od transferów pieniężnych na rzecz świadczeń pozapieniężnych, aktywizacji społecznej czy zawodowej ma jedynie charakter deklaratywny. W analizowanym okresie wystąpił negatywny trend polegający na zwiększeniu się liczby odbiorców świadczeń realizowanych w formie pieniężnej przy spadku liczby osób objętych wsparciem w formie pozapieniężnej. Rosła także liczba świadczeń przyznawanych z powodu dysfunkcji zdrowotnych i niepełnosprawności, malała zaś liczba świadczeń z powodu bezrobocia i ubóstwa. Ponadto nastąpiło zwiększenie zatrudnienia w sektorze pomocy społecznej, ale przy jednoczesnym spadku zatrudnienia pracowników socjalnych.
Benefits from the social assistance system in Poland at the local level may be paid in cash or non-cash forms. The purpose of the article is to present selected benefits in the social assistance system and identify trends in changes occurring in the provision of social assistance benefits in 2012-2018. In the analysed period in Poland there was an increase in employment in the social assistance sector, with a simultaneous decrease in the employment of social workers. During 2012-2018, a negative trend was also observed, consisting in an increase in the number of recipients of benefits in the form of cash, with a decrease in the number of persons covered by non-cash support. In Poland the number of benefits in the social assistance system granted due to health dysfunction and disability has increased, while the number of benefits due to unemployment and poverty has decreased. The analyses carried out for the purposes of the article indicate that in Poland public policy in the area of social assistance consisting in the activation and strengthening of social assistance beneficiaries and the abandonment of redistribution of funds to those in need is only declarative.

Opis:
One of the basic active tools used in social assistance in Poland is a social contract. It is an agreement between a social worker and the person who benefits (or their family) which defines and exactly describes their mutual obligations, expectations, rights and responsibilities. The article presents the results of a survey conducted among 413 social workers from the Podkarpacie Province. The results of empirical research has identified social workers` attitudes and opinions towards social contracts. The empirical results shows that social contract is unpopular and ineffective tool of social work practice in Podkarpacie Province.

Opis:
Non-destructive research of historical objects makes possible to collect valuable information concerning technical construction and the state of preservation. Observations and analyses carried out in visible light, UV, infrared as well as under the impact of X-ray radiation provide an image of the object's surface and its inner structure. The outcome obtained in this manner is registered most often in the form of digital photographs. Such a form of recording together with suitable computer techniques create the possibility of systematizing and making informations collected from the photograph more precise. Presented publication deals with the possibility of applying computer analysis techniques into nondestructive studies of works of art. This is an attempt at elaborating a method (or a tool) which will improve the examination of historical objects. The example of three selected objects from the collections of the National Museum in Krakow presents various possibilities of computer analysis as well as its application in suitable research. Such a method could become useful in assessing the state of the preservation of the object as well as its technical structure or manner of execution. The article, of a purely reconnaissance nature, is a collective publication of the Laboratory of Non-Destructive Analysis and Research of Historic Objects of the National Museum in Krakow and the Strata Mechanics Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow.

In order to determine in detail the structure of the painting, physical and chemical analyses were carried out, such as: UV light examination, IR light examination, X-ray, chemical analysis of the ground layer and pigments (of the original paint layer as well as the overpaint layers). The stratigraphy of the existing layers was determined based on the examination of the cross-sections. Pigments were identified by the analysis of their elemental contents. Chemical analyses were carried out using noninvasive methods. Measurements were carried out using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF).

Aim/purpose – The paper examines the level of investment activity among the last semester master’s degree students of economics fields, including investment in stocks and in forex (FX) in comparison to a poker game. Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents the exploration of similarities and differences of stock trading, forex trading and poker playing (a critical analysis of the literature), and questionnaire research among 613 students of the last semester of studies at the University of Economics in Katowice. Findings – A decreasing level of a participation of individuals in financial markets refers to different financial segments like capital markets and trading on, e.g. the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) or the foreign exchange market (forex, FX). The current market situation does not constitute favourable conditions to increase commitment of individual investors on the WSE. In addition, other form of investment among young people is being observed, e.g. poker. The results of the research stress the role of an effective financial education and its influence on a changing the attitudes towards investments. Research implications/limitations – The research sample is limited to the students of one university. Originality/value/contribution – So far, there has not been conducted any research among potential important participants of financial markets which takes into account the listed alternatives: investments on the Warsaw Stock Exchange and in forex, or a poker game.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the effect of climate change, mainly higher and lower precipitation, on the intensity of the impact of a coal waste dump on groundwater. The analysis used meteorological data for the Katowice region in 2002-2020 as well as data on the height of the groundwater table in the vicinity of the coal waste dump, and data on physicochemical parameters and chemical composition of groundwater in 2004-2020. Based on the analyses, it was found that the periods of drought in the Silesian Voivodeship, located in the south of Poland, occurred mainly in spring, while periods of excessive short-term rainfall in summer. The period of excessive annual precipitation occurred between 2007 and 2010, followed by a long period of dry or very dry years that lasted until 2016. During the period of excess annual precipitation, the leachate from the waste dump caused a decrease in the pH of groundwater from ca. 5 to 2.50, while an increase in electrolytic conductivity (EC) and the concentration of sulphates and zinc from ca. 1300 ms/cm, 100 mg/L, 5 mg/L to 5100 ms/cm, 3890 mg/L, 18.5 mg/L, respectively.

Opis:
The Suchedniów water reservoir is located in the central section of the River Kamionka in the northern part of the Holy Cross Mountains of central Poland. This area once belonged to the Old Polish Industrial District that, during the Middle Ages, was very intensively developed by iron metallurgy. Many forges and mills along the rivers used water power, which led to the construction of an anthropogenic, small-scale water retention system. At the beginning of the twentieth century many of these reservoirs were drained after the collapse of metallurgical activities. The present-day reservoir was built in 1974 and drained in 2017. Research into the drained basin has documented various forms and sediments, some of which record present-day depositional processes (fire proof clay layer, inland fan delta), while others represent the historical period (lacustrine sediments of older reservoirs). Traces of catastrophic events have been preserved as well; an assemblage of megaripples marks the sudden drainage caused by a dam break in 1974.

The “Polish Research on Gastric Cancer” project has been continued since 1986. The main aim of this project, which is a multicenter and interdisciplinary research, is enhancing the treatment results of gastric cancer patients by developing and promoting the use of optimal methods for diagnosis and treatment, both surgical as well as combined. One of the more important achievements of the project is the development and publication of a document named “Polish Consensus on Treatment of Patients with Gastric Cancer”, whose first version was published in 1998. Following versions were updated adequately to changing trends in the proceedings in patients with gastric cancer. A scientific symposium on “Polish Consensus on Treatment of Gastric Cancer – update 2016” was held in 3-4 June 2016 in Cracow. During the symposium a panel session was held during which all authors publicly presented the Consensus assumptions to be discussed further. Moreover, the already mentioned session was preceded by a correspondence as well as a working meeting in order to consolidate the position. It has to be underlined that the directions and guidelines included in the Consensus are not the arbitrarily assumed rules of conduct in a legal aspect and as such every doctor/team of doctors is entitled to make different decisions as long as they are beneficial to a patient with gastric cancer. The Consensus discusses as follows: a) recommended qualifications (stage of advancement, pathological, lymph node topography and the extent of lymphadenectomy, division of cancer of the gastroesophageal junction), b) rules for diagnostics including recommendations regarding endoscopic examination and clinical evaluation of the advancement stage, c) recommendations regarding surgical treatment (extent of resection, extent of lymphadenectomy, tactics of proceedings in cancer of the gastroesophageal junction), d) recommendations regarding combined treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy, e) place of endoscopic and less invasive surgery in the treatment of gastric cancer. This publication is a summary of the arrangements made in the panel session during the abovementioned scientific symposium in Cracow in 2016.

Od roku 1986 kontynuowany jest projekt naukowy pt. „Polskie Badania nad Rakiem Żołądka”. Głównym celem tego projektu czyli wieloośrodkowych i interdyscyplinarnych badań jest poprawa wyników leczenia chorych na raka żołądka poprzez opracowanie i propagowanie optymalnych metod rozpoznawania i leczenia zarówno chirurgicznego, jak i skojarzonego. Jednym z ważniejszych osiągnięć projektu jest opracowanie i publikacja dokumentu pt. „Polski Konsensus w Sprawie Leczenia Chorych na Raka Żołądka”, którego pierwsza wersja została opublikowana w roku 1998. Kolejne wersje były aktualizowane adekwatnie do zmieniających się trendów w postępowaniu u chorych na raka żołądka. W Krakowie w dniach 3-4 czerwca 2016r. odbyło się sympozjum naukowe „Polski konsensus w sprawie leczenia raka żołądka – aktualizacja 2016”. W czasie sympozjum odbyła się sesja panelowa w trakcie wszyscy autorzy przedstawili publicznie założenia Konsensusu do dalszej dyskusji. Ponadto wspomniana sesja była poprzedzona zarówno dyskusją w formie korespondencji i jak i spotkaniem roboczym w celu ujednolicenia stanowiska. Należy podkreślić, że zawarte w Konsensusie wskazówki i zalecenia nie są arbitralnie przyjętymi zasadami postępowania w aspekcie prawnym a tym samym każdy lekarz/zespół lekarzy ma prawo podjęcia innych decyzji o ile będzie to korzystne dla chorego na raka żołądka. Konsensus omawia kolejno: a) zalecane kwalifikacje (stopnia zaawansowania, patologiczna, topografii węzłów chłonnych oraz zakresu wycięcia węzłów chłonnych, podziału raka połączenia przełykowo-żołądkowa) b) zasady rozpoznawania w tym zalecenia dotyczące badania endoskopowego i klinicznej oceny stopnia zaawansowania c) zalecenia dotyczące leczenia chirurgicznego (zakres resekcji, zakres limfadenektomii, taktyka postępowania w raku połączenia przełykowo-jelitowego) d) zalecenia dotyczące leczenia skojarzonego z chemioterapią lub radioterapią. e) miejsce chirurgii endoskopowej i małoinwazyjnej w leczeniu raka żołądka. Niniejsza publikacja jest podsumowaniem ustaleń sesji panelowej w trakcie wspomnianego sympozjum naukowego w Krakowie w 2016 roku.

Opis:
Previously published studies on levels of the transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) protein and mRNA of the corresponding gene in patients suffering from inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) gave varying results, leading to contradictory conclusions. To solve the contradictions, we aimed to assess longitudinally TGF-β1 protein and mRNA levels at different stages of the disease in children suffering from IBD. The study group consisted of 19 pediatric patients with IBD at the age between 3.5 and 18.4 years. The control group consisted of 42 children aged between 2.0 and 18.0 years. The plasma TGF-β1 concentration was measured with ELISA. mRNA levels of the TGF-β1 gene isolated from samples of the intestinal tissue were assessed by reverse transcription and real-time PCR. Levels of TGF-β1 protein in plasma and corresponding mRNA in intestinal tissue were significantly higher in IBD patients than in controls. TGF-β1 and corresponding transcripts were also more abundant in plasma and intestinal tissue, respectively, in patients at the active stage of the disease than during remission. In every single IBD patient, plasma TGF-β1 level and mRNA level in intestinal tissue was higher at the active stage of the disease than during remission. Levels of TGF-β1 and corresponding mRNA are elevated during the active stage of IBD but not during the remission. Longitudinal assessment of this cytokine in a single patient may help to monitor the clinical course of IBD.
