Aim: The world has become increasingly interconnected and complex. This represents a very serious problem for sustainable development; therefore, the development of instruments that reduces ignorance as well as fragilities are required, this with the intention of being prepared to deal with unexpected events that can threaten sustainability. In this context, universities emerges as a key player since they have the responsibility to lead society towards a sustainable future through the generation of professionals, managers and decision makers which play significant roles in national and global economies; however, it seems that the talent and human resources that are being generated lack the capacity to face these complex problems. This research aims  to identify if teaching interventions, applied to engineering students, produces changes on students perception about business sustainability and sustainable development and, as consequence, identify if the creation of necessary cognitive capabilities for the solution of complex problems that can lead us to collapse scenarios can be produced on students. Design / Research methods: Questionnaires were applied in a Mexican university. The experiment consists of three phases: (1) a pre-test (n=337), (2) intervention and (3) a post-test (n=329) to see the differences after the interventions. Analysis has been carried out based in hypothesis testing through z-test in order to identify significative changes among the two samples. Conclusions / findings: Changes in the students' perception were observed. This means that the conditions for teaching sustainable development and sustainable business in this case of study can potentially contribute to creating in students the cognitive capabilities necessary to contribute to business sustainability. The results must be threated carefully; nevertheless, they provide the basis for further research. Originality / value of the article: This paper makes substantial and original contributions to knowledge in the field through empirical approach; provide a unique and explorative perspective of the situation of current conditions for teaching sustainable development and sustainable business and presents potential contributions in to the creation of students with the awareness and capacities to solve the complex problems of sustainable development

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a powerful mean to promotes sustainable development. A decade ago, the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) promoted this concept to support the creation of a more sustainable future. In 2015, the United Nations launched The Global Action Programme (GAP) to promote the EDS at all levels and in all settings. The University of Sonora in Northwestern Mexico has been engaged in greening its campus by a Sustainability Management System (SMS), which is based on the ISO 14001 international standard. This article is aimed at measuring the awareness of students about safety in chemistry laboratories at the University of Sonora. Despite of being the first university to be ISO 14001 certified in Latin America, findings in this study show that most of the students at the University of Sonora are unaware of key topics of the institutional sustainability management system. Particularly, students are unaware of internal practices for increasing safety in laboratories. A better awareness of the environmental policy and benefits of safety issues among students could be a positive indicator of the relevance of the SMS for increasing the safety within laboratories.

The energy consumption worldwide by the industrial sector is expected to keep increasing during the coming years; generating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as unwanted byproducts. For that reason, industrial facilities must take concrete initiatives in order to decouple their production growth from their CO2 emission generation in order to decrease their contributions to global warming. Concerned that this is a world-wide problem, Mexican maquiladoras have started several energy-efficiency initiatives. The aim of this article is to present significant results of a descriptive and analytical study that has been conducted into three maquiladoras located at northwestern Mexico of the first two stages of the Cleaner Production - Energy Efficiency program proposed by the United Nations Environment Programme. Findings reveal that, although electrical devices seem work efficiently, it is still possible to address energy waste. Additionally, attaching the energy-efficiency approach to the cleaner production framework was found a complicated task because, unlike emissions and toxic residues, energy inefficiencies are not easily visible, verifiable, or measurable.

Much of the energy used in the world is associated with the construction sector, and one of the ways to reduce that energy consumption is to do each constructive process in an energetically efficient way. The aim of this paper is to present results from an energy efficiency program in the construction of a business complex in Hermosillo, Mexico, particularly in the processes of reinforcing steel activities (rebar). Results reveal that appropriate use of equipment and the coordination between engineers and workers help to improve the energy efficiency during the construction phase also reducing material waste. Additionally, attaching the energy efficiency approach to the cleaner production framework is a complicated task due to energy inefficiencies are not easily identified and estimated. Since there is less energy consumption in construction process along the life cycle of buildings compared to operation activities, there is little evidence on energy efficiency studies in that part of the process. Therefore, this paper intends to provide experiences to construction experts in order to have better basis for decisions related to energy efficiency in this industry.
Duża część konsumpcji energii na świecie przypada na sektor budowlany, a jedną z metod redukcji tego zużycia jest przeprowadzenie każdego procesu budowlanego w sposób wydajny energetycznie. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wyników programu na rzecz wydajności energetycznej związanego z budową kompleksu biznesowego w Hermosillo w Meksyku, a zwłaszcza z użyciem stali zbrojeniowej (prętów zbrojeniowych). Wyniki wskazują, że właściwe wykorzystanie sprzętu oraz koordynacja pomiędzy inżynierami i pracownikami pomaga poprawić wydajność energetyczną w fazie budowy oraz ograniczyć odpady. Co więcej, włączenie podejścia opartego na wydajności energetycznej w ogólne podstawy czystszej produkcji jest skomplikowanym zadaniem z tego powodu, że niewydajność energetyczna jest trudna do zidentyfikowania i oszacowania. Dlatego też mniejsza konsumpcja energii w procesie budowlanym w całym cyklu życia budynków w porównaniu do działalności produkcyjnej nie odzwierciedla się w dowodach w postaci badań nad wydajnością energetyczną w tej części procesu. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu zaprezentowanie doświadczenia ekspertów budowlanych, aby wesprzeć proces decyzyjny związany z wydajnością energetyczną w analizowanym przemyśle.
