Opis:
State transfer is a well-known routine for various systems of spins-1/2. Still, it is not well studied for chains of spins of larger magnitudes. In this contribution we argue that while perfect state transfer may seem unnatural in spin-1 systems, it is still feasible for arrays of V-type three-level atoms. Tomography of such 1D array is also shown to be possible by acting on one atom from such an array.

Opis:
India is a rich cultural country in which diverse cultural and religious festivals are organized. Idol is an image of a god which is used as an object of worship. After worshipped, these idols are immersed into water bodies. Idols are constructed by plaster of paris, clay, cloths, small iron rods, bamboo and decorated with different paints such as varnish, water colors etc. which can lead to significant alteration in the water quality after immersion. Paints which are used to colour these idols contains various heavy metals such as Mercury, Cadmium, Arsenic, Zinc, Chromium and Lead. Particularly, red, blue, orange and green colours contain mercury, zinc oxide, chromium and lead, which are potent carcinogens. Two heavy metals such as Lead and Chromium also add in the water bodies through Sindoor (a traditional red colored cosmetic powder, usually worn by married women and often used in the festivals). The floating materials released through idol in the river and lake after decomposition result in eutrophication, increase in acidity and heavy metal concentration. Heavy metal pollution caused by idol immersion can damage the ecosystem as it kills fishes, damages plants, blocks the natural flow of the water, causing stagnation. The effects of idol immersion on various water bodies of India like Bhoj wetland, Budhabalanga river, Ganges river, Hussainsagar lake, Kolar river, Sarayu river, Tapi river, Chhatri lake, north and west lakes of Bangalore and Yamuna river have been observed so far. Investigations were carried out to find out the effects of immersion of idols on water quality by collecting and analyzing the water samples from the immersion sites of the rivers. The samplings were done before the immersion, on the day of immersion and after the event and several parameters like Temperature, pH, Dissolved Oxygen, BOD, Dissolved CO2, Conductivity, Salinity, Alkalinity, TDS, Total Hardness, Chlorides etc. are estimated. Most of the studies found significant changes in the water quality parameters during and after immersions. Central Pollution Control Board has formulated guidelines on the practice of idol immersion in water bodies, which should be followed for controlling pollution.

Opis:
Purpose: After a thorough study of literature it is concluded that the studies related to unskirted/skirted octagonal footings on sand have not yet been investigated. Thus, this paper presents a numerical analysis to assess the ultimate bearing capacity of the unskirted, unskirted-embedded, singly and doubly skirted octagonal footings resting on different sands (S1, S2, and S3). The length of skirt and depth of the embedded footing were varied from 0.0B to 1.5B. Design/methodology/approach: The numerical square and octagonal footing with singly and doubly skirted footing models were developed using Plaxis 3D software. Findings: The results of the doubly skirted octagonal footings ultimate bearing capacity were marginally higher in comparison to the singly skirted footing at all normalised skirt depths as well as for all sands up to a Ds/B ratio 0.25 beyond which the increase in the ultimate bearing capacity in case of doubly skirted footing was appreciable. Research limitations/implications: The results presented in this paper were based on numerical analysis. However, for the actual footings the soil placement and compaction, details of skirt construction and the stress level will be different from the numerical analysis. Further investigations using full-scale numerical models simulating field size footings were recommended to generalize the results. Originality/value: No such study on singly and doubly skirted octagonal shaped footings were conducted so far. Hence, an attempt was made in this article to predict the bearing capacity of those footings using Plaxis 3D.

Opis:
Purpose: The paper presents an experimental and numerical study to evaluate the bearing capacity of unskirted, singly and doubly skirted irregular pentagonal footings on different sands (S1, S2, S3) at a relative density of 30 %. The skirt depth of the footing was varied from 0.0B to 1.5B (B is the width of the square footing). Design/methodology/approach: The experimental and numerical study of the singly and doubly skirted irregular pentagonal footing resting on sands was modelled in a test tank and Plaxis 3D software respectively. Findings: The results of this study reveal that the bearing capacity was higher for the skirted irregular pentagonal footings on sand S3 followed by sand S2 and S1. The lowest percentage improvement for the singly skirted footing on sand S3 was 18.51% at a Ds/B = 0.25 whereas the highest improvement was 90.81% at a Ds/B = 1.50 for the singly skirted footing on sand S2. The highest percentage improvement for the doubly skirted footing on sand S2 was 95.13% at a Ds/B = 1.5 whereas the lowest improvement was 23.70% at a Ds/B = 0.25 the doubly skirted footing on sand S3. The results further revealed that the numerically obtained bearing capacity was marginally higher in comparison to the one obtained experimentally for the footings on all sands. Further, the experimental results validated the results obtained numerically with an average deviation of 8%. The percentage improvement in the bearing capacity was higher for the irregular pentagonal footing resting on sand S2 in comparison to sand S3 and S1. The settlement response of the irregular pentagonal footings is unchanged by increasing the number of elements beyond 7700. Both the experimental and numerical studies revealed a linear elastic behaviour at Ds = 0.5B, while the experimentally obtained pressure-settlement ratio plot shows a clear failure at Ds= 1B and 1.5B. Research limitations/implications: The results presented in this paper were based on the experimental and numerical study conducted on small scale model footings. However, for the actual footings, further study is recommended using full-scale field size footings to generalize the results. Originality/value: No experimental and numerical studies on singly and doubly skirted irregular pentagonal footings were conducted so far. Hence, an attempt was made in this article to predict the bearing capacity of these footings experimentally and using Plaxis 3D respectively.

Opis:
The present study makes an effort to understand the damage of earthen dams under static and seismic loading condition. To make the investigation more realistic, behaviour of earthen dams considering the occurrence of a phreatic line indicating the submerged zone due to seepage within the dam body is considered. In case of earthen dams, homogeneous or nonhomogeneous, the consideration of the occurrence of a phreatic line or seepage line through the dam body is an important part of the earthen dam design methodology. The impervious material properties in the submerged zone below the phreatic line due to seepage may differ a lot in magnitudes as compared to the value of the same materials lying above this line. Hence, to have the exact stress distribution scenarios within the earthen dam, the different material properties above and below the phreatic line are considered in this present study. The study is first carried out by two-dimensional as well as three-dimensional finite element analysis under static loading condition. The work is further extended to observe the effect of seepage due to the consideration of the phreatic line on dynamic characteristics of earthen dams. Free vibration analysis and seismic analysis based on the Complete Quadratic Combination (CQC) method by considering twodimensional and three-dimensional modeling are carried out to present the frequencies, mode shapes and the stress distribution pattern of the earthen dam.

Opis:
Purpose: This study aims to study the load – settlement behaviour of circular footing rested on encased single stone column. Design/methodology/approach: The effect of vertical, horizontal and combined verticalhorizontal encasement of stone column on the load carrying capacity were examined numerically. The effect of stone column dimension (80 mm and 100 mm), length (400 mm and 500 mm), and spacing of reinforcement on the load carrying capacity and reinforcement ratio were assessed. Findings: The obtained results revealed that the load carrying capacity of geotextile encased stone columns are more than ordinary stone columns. For vertically encased stone columns as the diameter increases, the advantage of encasement decreases. Whereas, for horizontally encased stone column and combined vertical- horizontal encased stone column, the performance of encasement intensifies as the diameter of stone column increases. The improvement in the load carrying capacity of clay bed reinforced with combined verticalhorizontal encased stone columns are higher than vertical encased stone columns or horizontal encased stone column. The maximum performance of encasement was observed for VHESC1 of D = 80 mm. Research limitations/implications: For this study, the diameter of footing and stone column was kept same. The interface strength factor between stone column and clay bed was not considered. Practical implications: The encased stone column could be use improve the laod bearing capacity of weak soils. Originality/value: Many studies are available in literature regarding use of geosynthetic as vertical encasement and horizontal encasement of stone column. The study on combined effect of vertical and horizontal encasement of stone column on load carrying capacity of weak soil is very minimal. Keeping this in view, the present work was carried out.

Opis:
Arsenic (As) is a metalloid that causes severe water pollution due to its extravagant toxicity. Ceriodaphnia dubia, a freshwater crustacean, was selected as a model system to evaluate the degree of time and dosage dependent acute toxicity caused by pentavalent As [As(V)]. C. dubia were collected from a natural pond and treated with different concentrations of As(V) for 24 hours and 48 hours. For both 24 hours and 48 hours treatment periods, the mortality rates were increased significantly ( P< 0.05) with increase in As(V) concentrations. Simultaneously, it was also observed that As(V) - induced mortality in C. dubia also depended on the time of exposure to the metalloid. We propose this model as a low-cost technique towards rapid screening of water quality in relation to As contamination.
