Opis:
An exceptionally preserved specimen of the extinct trigonotarbid arachnid Eophrynus prestvicii (Arachnida: Trigonotarbida) from the Late Carboniferous (Duckmantian) British Middle Coal Measures of the UK is redescribed with the help of X-ray micro-tomography (XMT). Previous work is summarised and the correct spelling of the species name confirmed. Reconstruction of the void left by the original specimen within a siderite (ironstone) nodule reveals its three-dimensional structure as well as novel details which are difficult to resolve using traditional methods of study. The pedipalps and legs can now be reconstructed almost in their entirety and we can confirm that the chelicerae hung beneath the prosoma with a backwards-directed fang. Opisthosomal segmentation is clarified: a narrow tergite 1 is followed by eight further tergites (2–9), clearly demarked by their ornamentation. In general, a much more accurate picture of the spines and tuberculation ornamenting the dorsal surface of the body was resolved. Ventrally the opisthosoma bears socalled ventral sacs and terminates in a two-segmented pygidium. Based on the XMT model, a new reconstruction of E. prestvicii is presented. Although phylogenetically unrelated, the sometimes similar-looking, spiny and tuberculate lanitorid harvestmen (Opiliones: Lanitores) offer a possible ecological model for these highly ornamented trigonotarbids.

Opis:
The extinct arachnid order Trigonotarbida Petrunkevitch, 1949 is reported here for the first time from Ukraine. The material consists of an opisthosoma preserved in ventral view from the upper Carboniferous (lower Moscovian; Paralegoceras–Eowellerites ammonoid zone) of the Gorlivka locality in the Donets Basin, eastern Ukraine. Formal assignment to a family or genus is difficult, but the preserved ventral anatomy is consistent with a member of the families Aphantomartidae Petrunkevitch, 1945, Kreischeriidae Haase, 1890 or Eophrynidae Karsch, 1882. It is noteworthy for expanding the known distribution of trigonotarbids in Europe and is only the second Palaeozoic arachnid to be formally described from Ukraine; the other being the carapace of a whip scorpion (Thelyphonida Latreille, 1804) from Lomovatka in the Luhansk Region, also in the Donets Basin.

Opis:
It is now well accepted that electronic excitation and ionization arising from the slowing down of swift heavy ions can lead to structural modifications in some metallic targets as it has been known for a long time in insulators. A rapid overview of some results obtained after GeV monoatomic heavy ion irradiations will be given. It will then be shown that new specific effects take place during irradiations with cluster ions. The projectiles used are energetic cluster beams: 10 to 40 MeV Au$\text{}_{4}$ or C$\text{}_{60}$ ions. The rates of linear energy deposition in electronic excitation are close for GeV monoatomic and for 10 MeV cluster ions, but the cluster ions have characteristic velocities which are one order of magnitude smaller than those of monoatomic ions. This leads to a strong spatial localization of the deposited energy during the slowing down process. The density of deposited energy can then reach values as high as a few 100 eV/atom. This very high density of energy deposited in the electronic system of the targets can lead to spectacular structural modifications: generation in the vicinity of the ion trajectories of isolated or agglomerated point defects, new crystalline phases, amorphized regions... After an overview of such damage induced in bulk metals, semiconductors, and insulators, we will discuss surface damage, consisting in the formation of bumps, craters, "lava-flows" on the target surface.
