Opis:
In this paper, linear-elastic Rayleigh beams with a periodic structure are considered. Dynamics of such beams is described by partial differential equations with non-continuous highly oscillating coefficients. The analysis of dynamic problems using the aforementioned equations is very often problematic to perform. Thus, other simplified models of Rayleigh beams are proposed. Some of these models are based on the concept of the effective stiffness. Among them, one can distinguish the theory of asymptotic homogenization. However, in these models, the size of the mesostructure parameter (the size of a periodicity cell) is often neglected. Therefore, a non-asymptotic averaged model of the periodic beam is introduced, called the tolerance model, which is derived by applying the tolerance averaging technique (TA). The obtained tolerance model equations have constant coefficients, and in contrast to other averaged models, some of them depend on the size of the periodicity cell.

Opis:
Introduction and aim. Neutropenic enterocolitis is a severe disease that affects patients with immunodeficiency and is often related with the chemotherapy of the hematologic malignancies. Its pathophysiology is not fully understood. Neutropenic colitis may lead to sepsis, gastrointestinal bleeding and even perforations requiring surgical management. The therapy consists of antibiotic therapy, transfusions, hematopoietic growth factor treatment, usage of fluids and electrolytes, bowel rest and even surgical operations. The aim of this review is to consider the potential usage of probiotics in the prevention and treatment of neutropenic enterocolitis. Material and methods. References for that article were found through PubMed and Google Scholar, using terms: “neutropenic enterocolitis” and “probiotics”, or “gut microbiota” and “neutropenic enterocolitis”. The research was limited to abstracts and available full-text articles. Analysis of the literature. The most possible mechanism of neutropenic enterocolitis development appoints bacterial invasion with co-existing immunodeficiency. The probiotics appeal as beneficial agents in both prevention and treatment of neutropenic enterocolitis in according to their impact on gut immune barrier improvement. However older societies’ guidelines were cautious, the most modern ones appoint probiotics as a promising agent in neutropenic enterocolitis, what corresponds with results from current randomized clinical trials. Conclusion. As neutropenic enterocolitis is a severe disease we need to look for better or alternative therapies of that state. The probiotics seems to have beneficial effects in terms of prevention and treatment of neutropenic enterocolitis due to their impact on gut immune barrier. Benefits of such therapy are reflected in current societies’ guidelines which consider probiotics as a promising agent in neutropenic enterocolitis.

Opis:
Introduction and aim. The foramen magnum is a rare location of meningioma development, accounting for 1.8 to 3.2% of all reported tumors of this type. Microsurgical resection, representing a gold standard in foramen magnum meningioma treatment, may result in various neurological deficits or incomplete resection due to challenging anatomical conditions. Currently, even surgical resections of foramen magnum meningioma conducted by experienced neurosurgeons are burdened by a relatively high complication rate of 17.2% Description of the case. We report the case of a 25-year-old male who presented increasing headaches and decreasing activity for 5 months. In his medical history, the patient had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, and suffered partial seizures. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed anterolateral foramen magnum meningioma. The tumor was resected via a far-lateral approach. After the surgery, the patient maintained a preoperative neurological state without additional neurological deficits. The post-operative magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated complete tumor removal. Histopathological examination revealed transitional meningioma (WHO grade I). Conclusion. Our case demonstrates that the far-lateral approach can be efficient for the resection of anterolateral foramen magnum meningioma. In such cases, Simpson grade 1 can be achieved without complications, providing immediate relief of symptoms and minimizing the risk of recurrence.
