the oldest horse chestnut
Benedictine abbey - Opis:
- Horse chestnuts, Aesculus hippocastanum, are among the most decorative trees, often planted in stately places. The oldest specimen of the species in Poland is the horse chestnut which grows beside the Benedictine Abbey in Lubiń (Wielkopolskie Voivodeship), whose age is estimated at 260 years. The aim of the research conducted in 2018–2019 was to determine the health status of the tree using the latest research methods applied in modern dendrology. The results indicate that despite extensive decay within the trunk, Benedykt is in good condition. The tree shows high wind resistance in terms of both the stability of the root system and trunk flexibility. The rare fungi species Climacodon septentrionalis also present on the tree.
