Opis:
Stress distributions developing in granular materials in hoppers during the process of filling is fundamental for an understanding of the phenomena observed in hoppers. Predictions of such stress distributions are therefore essential. In this paper, based on a model which was created to simulate various filling procedures, an (ABAQUS) analysis has been carried out to investigate the development of stress distribution in the material and the loads on the hopper wall when the hopper is filled by the concentric-filling method. Calculations have been carried out either according to a procedure known as "switch-on" or according to the so-called layer-by-layer procedure. It was found that the maximum stress developed at the end of the filling, not at the bottom, but somewhere in the lower area of the hopper (layer 3). The stresses developed during layer-by-layer filling were greater than those developed during the switch-on filling in the lower area of the hopper, but were smaller in its upper area. Maxima of normal pressure along the wall were not at the outlet, even from the very beginning of filling. Instead, it was located at a position around 2/5 of the length of the wall from the outlet when the filling was finished. Various filling methods would have an effect on the stress distribution within the material and, consequently, affect the type and magnitude of loads on the hopper wall, and particularly at the hopper outlet.

Opis:
A finite element analysis has been carried out to investigate flow patterns and loads on silos either with a ralatively steep hopper, or with a shallow hopper but in the presence of an insert. A Lagrangian-Eulerian approach was first adopted to simulate the material flow pattern, with the precondition that mass flow was obtained. It was then attempted to predict the loads exerted by granular materials on the walls of such silos. The load on the insert was also simulated. Techniques such as the adoption of adaptive meshes and filleting along sharp corners were applied in the analysis to overcome the difficulties usually encountered with large deformations in the FEM and the mathematic singularity presented by the abruptness of geometry. Filleting proved to be necessary to bring down the pressure peak at the transition level. The insert took over a significant part of the loads. Comparison with the classic theories have confirmed that the loads predicted on the wall agree quite well with the theoretical results in the silo's cylinder section, but that differences exist in the hopper section; the difference is greater when the hopper is shallower. It has also shown the limitations of predicting flow patterns of granular materials with the traditional elastic-plastic model; a more advanced model is needed.

Opis:
Integrated design of observer based Fault Detection (FD) for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with Lipschitz nonlinearities is studied. In the context of norm based residual evaluation, the residual generator and evaluator are designed together in an integrated form, and, based on it, a trade-off FD system is finally achieved in the sense that, for a given Fault Detection Rate (FDR), the False Alarm Rate (FAR) is minimized. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

Opis:
Fibers with low gum content were extracted from the bark of mulberry branches by a combination of bacteria and peroxide treatments. The bark of mulberry branches, with 30% cellulose, is a copious and inexpensive source of natural fibers. However, fibers extracted by microwave, enzyme or alkali had a high gum content (15.5% for hemicellulose and 8.6% for lignin), which rendered them difficult to be made into high- value textiles. In this research, strains with high polygalacturonase activities and subsequent hydrogen peroxide decreased the hemicellulose content to 2.5% and lignin content to 2.4%. Mulberry fibers in our study could be spun into yarns with a fineness of 18.2 tex. Compared to flax yarns, mulberry fiber yarns had a tenacity 20% higher, an elongation 18% higher and an unevenness 30% lower. Cotton/mulberry fiber fabrics had softer and smoother hand than cotton/flax fabrics. Overall, the fibers in our study show better potential for industrial textile applications than those in previous studies.
W porównaniu do przędz lnianych, przędze z włókien morwy wykazywały o 20% wyższą wytrzymałość, o 18% wyższe wydłużenie i o 30% niższą nierównomierność. Tkaniny bawełniane z dodatkiem morwy miały bardziej miękki i gładszy chwyt, niż tkaniny bawełniane z dodatkiem lnu.

Opis:
The effects of four different kinds of nanoparticles (NPs), namely, CuO, ZnO, TiO2, and Au, of the sizes ranging from <20 nm to 50 nm on Daphnia magna, early life stage of zebrafish, and various enzymes have been investigated. The experimental results showed that the NPs inhibited both the body length and hatching rate of zebrafish larvae; the small nanoparticles exhibited more toxicity. In a 21 day chronic toxicity test, metal ions of higher concentrations significantly reduced the number of Daphnia magna offspring. Studies on enzyme activity showed that the NPs reduced the glutathione content and inhibited catalase and superoxide dismutase activities, resulting in shorter body length, lower hatching success, and lower reproduction of zebrafish larvae. Therefore, studies should focus more on the potential toxicity of smaller NPs.

Opis:
Current targets in reducing CO2 and other greenhouse gases as well as fossil fuel depletion have promoted the research for alternatives to petroleum-based fuels. Pyrolysis oil (PO) from biomass and waste oil is seen as a method to reduce life-cycle CO2, broaden the energy mix and increase the use of renewable fuels. The abundancy and low prices of feedstock have attracted the attention of biomass pyrolysis in order to obtain energy-dense products. Research has been carried out in optimising the pyrolysis process, finding efficient ways to convert the waste to energy. However, the pyrolysis products have a high content in water, high viscosity and high corrosiveness which makes them unsuitable for engine combustion. Upgrading processes such as gasification, trans-esterification or hydro-deoxynegation are then needed. These processes are normally costly and require high energy input. Thus, emulsification in fossil fuels or alcohols is being used as an alternative. In this research work, the feasibility of using PO-diesel emulsion in a single-cylinder diesel engine has been investigated. In-cylinder pressure, regulated gaseous emissions, particulate matter, fuel consumption and lubricity analysis reported. The tests were carried out of a stable non-corrosive wood pyrolysis product produced by Future Blends Ltd of Milton Park, Oxfordshire, UK. The product is trademarked by FBL, and is a stabilized fraction of raw pyrolysis oil produced in a process for which the patent is pending. The results show an increase in gaseous emissions, fuel consumption and a reduction in soot. The combustion was delayed with the emulsified fuel and a high variability was observed during engine operation.
