Opis:
The study explored propagation techniques of Entada rheedii Spreng., a threatened medicinal climber species with extremely hard seed coat. Propagation trials included both pre-sowing treatments of seeds for germination and clonal propagation by stem cutting. Pre-sowing treatments included (a) soaking of both cut (notched) and uncut (intact) seeds in water for 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h and (b) immersion of intact seeds in 5% acetone solution for 5 min, 10 min, and 20 min before sowing in germination media in polybags. On the other hand, stem cutting involved treating the summer or autumn cuttings with 0%, 0.4%, and 0.8% IBA solution before rooting in non-mist propagator. Notched seeds soaked in water for 48 h showed the fastest seed germination with the highest germination percentages (73.3) and better seedling growth in terms of plant height, collar diameter, leaf number and total dry mass followed by notched seeds soaked in water for 72 h. The slowest germination and the lowest germination percentage (3.3), as well as the poorest growth performance was for intact seeds without any treatment. The highest rooting percent- age with maximum number of roots (36.6) was obtained from the summer cuttings treated with 0.4% IBA solution followed by autumn cuttings with 0.8% IBA and the lowest (43.3% and 8.3 roots) was for summer cuttings in control. The factors also dictated the survival and growth performance of rooted cuttings in the nursery conditions. The outcomes of these trials i.e., notched seeds soaking in water for 48 h will help to enhance the propagation of this valuable medicinal plant species.

Opis:
An advanced, solvent-less resin based Combustible Cartridge Case (CCC), designed to resolve the inherent problems of shrinkage and limited mechanical strength associated with the gelatinisation of nitrocellulose, has already been developed. The felt-moulded components contain thermoplastic polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) resin as the binder and the enhanced mechanical strength is achieved by carrying out hot compaction of dry felts at an elevated temperature (105 ± 2 °C). Presently, resin based technology is adopted for tank gun ammunition and also for the developed modular CCCs, i.e. the Modular Combustible Case (MCC) for different types of artillery gun ammunition. However, during exhaustive trials conducted with the resin based CCCs in 120 mm tank gun ammunition at three temperatures, i.e. -10, 27 and 55 °C, severe geometrical deformation was noticed when the rounds were conditioned at 55 °C for 24 h., adversely affecting the loading of rounds into the gun chamber. This was attributed to the combined effects of softening of the resin at that temperature and the load of the projectile/ shell (14.4 kg) experienced by the CCC region during conditioning of the round in the horizontal mode. In order to resolve this problem of deformation, PVAc resin was required to be modified. The PVAc resin was modified to the form of a nanocomposite. PVAc nano composite was prepared by dispersing organically modified nano clay, i.e. Cloisite 30B, into the resin before making the CCCs. The nanocomposite of PVAc resin was characterized by FTIR, DMA, softening point measurement etc. The results showed a remarkable improvement in the glass transition temperature (Tg) and in the softening temperature of the modified PVAc resin. This modified PVAc resin was used to prepare CCCs. Furthermore, these CCCs were coated with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) on the inner and the outer surfaces. The isocyanate coating becomes crosslinked in the matrix, thereby improving the softening point as well as the mechanical properties of the CCCs. These modified CCCs were repeatedly tested at 55 and 60 °C for 24 h. After testing, it was found that no deformation had taken place and the assembled rounds were easily loaded into the gun chamber. The use of the PVAc nanocomposite in the preparation of resin based CCCs, followed by isocyanate coating, is an effective means of achieving the required improvement in structural integrity of the resin CCCs at elevated temperatures.

Opis:
The present study aims to explore relationships between footedness and posturographic assessment in children aged from 4 to 10. A real-time computerised device was used on a force plate for movement analysis. It requires a static posturography to assess postural control of children with the same handedness and footedness. Methods: Thirty eight right-handed and right-footed children organized in three age groups of 4 to 6 years old, 6 to 8 years old and 8 to 10 years old participated in the study. Two statical tests, the Unilateral Stance (US) and the Weight Bearing Squat (WBS) were performed, jointly with a dynamic balance examination (Limits of Stability (LOS)). All these tests were executed to explore the body capability of the right/left side. Results: The study demonstrated significant differences involving the right/left side among the three age groups. Better performance on the youngest children’s right part and on the oldest children’s left part was observed. Differences between the left and right sides of the body were noticeably revealed by posturographic assessments in right-handed and right-footed children. Conclusions: Age seemed to be a determinant for these outcomes. Maturation of the vestibular at the ages of 6 or 7 years might explain the observed differences between the youngest children and older-children.
