Opis:
The objective of the study was to establish possibilities of the development of the I stage larvae of E. cervi in fishes and amphibians, and possibilities of paratheny in the organism of these animals. In the alimentary tract of the fishes both the I stage and the invasive (i.e. III stage) larvae can not cross the intestine barrier and undergo digestion. However, in the frag organism the I stage larvae of E. cervi are capable of crossing the wall of the alimentary canal and of going through a part of their development, though not attaining the II stage. The invasive larvae fed to the frogs penetrate under the peritoneum, into the mesenterium and the muscles and there they survive inside cysts. Frogs as parathenic hosts for E. cervi can be dangerous for predators feeding on amphibians. The larvae of E. cervi liberated in their organism can pass through the cerebral phase of their development thus causing neural clinical symptoms.

Microfilariae of Dipetalonema rugosicauda were found in roe deers in all examined hunting grounds. Prevalence of invasion oscillated from 6,6% to 57,1 %. The wide dispersion of D. rugosicauda in Poland is caused by common occurrence in our country of the intermediate host and vector of this nematode - tick Ixodes ricinus.

Opis:
Single doses (from 300 to 1000 larvi per an animal) of invasive larvae E. cervi Cameron, 1931, obtained from experimentally infected snails Helix pomatia L. were given to 17 guinea pigs and 17 golden hamsters. Clinical nervous symptoms in the form of paresis and paralysis of limbs occurred only in the guinea pigs which were given a dose of 1000 larvi. These animals died in the period from the 75th to 117th day of infection. From their central nervous system single adult males and females of E. cervi were isolated. In the lungs and mesenteries of 2 dead pigs live larvae of E. cervi were found. This fact proves that the guinea pig can fulfil the role of a final and a paratenic host of E. cervi. No clinical symptoms were noticed in any hamster. In hamsters dissected on the 7th day of infection live larvae of E. cervi were found in the mesentery and in the fleshy part of the diaphgram. After 14 days the larvae found both in the mesentery and in the diaphragm were dead and surrounded by cellular infiltration. A strong tissue reaction of the hamster after the administration of E. cervi larvae is responsible for the larvae destruction and resorption.

Dirofilariosis caused by the Dirofilaria repens nematodes is widely dispersed in southern Europe, Asia and Africa among dogs, cats, other carnivores and occasionally, humans. The first case of D. repens infection, found in Poland in 2007, concerned humans. In 2009, dirofilariosis was first registered in dogs in 3 focuses in central Poland, Warsaw, Pruszków and Żyrardów, whose range grew considerably with the subsequent identification of D. repens microfilariae in 119 dogs in Warsaw and 18 districts of the Mazowieckie Province. The microfilariae of D. repens were found in blood samples taken from 1588 dogs from all 16 provinces of Poland. D. repens was also recently detected in a mixture of Culex pipiens and Aedes vexans mosquitoes collected in Mazowieckie Province using Real Time PCR. The results of this study confirms the acclimatisation of D. repens on the territory of Poland and a possibility for it to close its life cycle in domestic species of mosquito.

The relationship between European bison and cervidae is a good model for studies on the influence of migration and introduction of new species on the helminthofauna of wild ruminants and the occurrence of new parasitoses. Changes in the helminthofauna of bison and deer under the influence of changes in the environment and living conditions, as well as the introduction and migration of other species, are discussed in detail. The exchange of helminths between bison, cervids and domestic ruminants is demonstrated. Examples of helminth introduction from specific Cervidae species, the formation of the new host-parasite systems and the appearance of new parasitoses are also presented.

Opis:
During the years 1992-1993 terrestrial snails were examined to the infection with larvae of Protostrongylidae family in the South and North of Poland. Using compressor method 2267 terrestrial snails from two areas (Pszczyna and Iława) were examined. Collected gastropods belonged to the following species: Arion subfuscus (45 specimens), Bradybaena fruticum (9), Cepaea nemoralis (29), Succinea putris (2147), Zonitoides nitidus (37). Larvae of three species of Protostrongylidae family were found: Elaphostrongylus cervi, Varestrongylus sagittatus and V. capreoli. The highest extensiveness of invasion of Protostrongylidae was noticed in Succinea putris and reached 23,5% in one of plots in the Iława Forest District. The highest intensity of infection was found in S. putris and was as follows: E. cervi up to 150 larvae, V. sagittatus up to 41, and V. capreoli up to 132 larvae. Besides Z. nitidus (1 specimen) there were not noticed any larvae of Protostrongylidae in other species of terrestrial snails. Average extensiveness of invasion of Protostrongylidae in 1992 and 1993 amounted to 7,2 and 9,5% in Iława, and 13,9 and 9,4% in Pszczyna, respectively. The highest percentage of infested gastropods was noticed in June and July. Similar results were obtained in both biotopes examined.

Elaphostrongylus cervi
Opis:
Elaphostrongylus cervi is a parasite of skeletal muscles and central nervous system of wild and farm red deer in Europe and Asia. Numerous species of terrestrial snails can be its intermediate hosts. Considering the fact that invasive larvae of E. cervi are released by deer to the external environment in huge numbers, fishes and birds can be accidentally infect by them. In this study the development of larvae E. cervi in those nonspecific hosts was discussed. It was determined that invasive larvae of E. cervi in the digestive tract of fish do not penetrate the intestinal wall, do not develop any further, and are probably digested. Similarly, those larvae given to chicken are also incapable of breaking the gut barrier and are digested. In all infected animals, the phenomenon of parathenia has not been observed and the meat of the animals studied poses not threat to humans.

Protozoa from the genus Eimeria belong to the least recognized parasites of the European bison. There are only a few data concerning the infection of the bison by these protozoa in Białowieża Forest. In the winter of 2007/2008 weighting 3 g fecal samples from the rectum of 16 shot bison were examined by flotation method. In 13 of them were found coccidian oocysts from genus Eimeria, which were determined to the species by morphometric study under the microscope. In all 13 positive samples, it is 81.2%, oocysts of Eimeria bovis were found. Intensiveness of this infection oscillated from 1 to 181 and the mean one was 38 oocysts. E. zuernii was found in 9 samples in the mean intensity 19 (1–154) oocysts. E. ellipsoidalis occurred in 3 bison with a very low intensity 1 to 3 oocysts. The most rarely occurred E. canadiensis, only in 2 examined bison in the number of 2 and 3 oocysts. All found coccidian species are the typical parasites of cattle. Białowieża Forest is a new place of occurrence of these parasites. European bison is a new host for E. zuernii.

Opis:
Samples of oesophagus, diaphragm and heart muscles were taken from one European bison from Białowieża Forest during seasonal European bison elimination in 2008. Five gram of each muscle was examined by staining small samples in 0.2% aqueous solution of methylene blue. After that they were placed between compressor glasses and examined under a dissecting microscope in order to detect Sarcocystis sp. infection. All sarcocysts observed were counted. The 5-g sample of the heart muscle yielded a total of 756 sarcocysts while that of the diaphragm contained 107 of them and that of the oesophagus – 89. All of the sarcocysts were isolated from 1 g of each muscle by using preparation needles (probes). After that the sarcocysts were taken to 0.5% physiological solution and examined under light microscope. The special attention was paid to detection of their cyst wall, which was thin (1 mm up to 1.2 mm) and smooth in all cases. Sometimes villar protrusions were seen on the surface of the cysts. Differences between the size of sarcocysts isolated from different muscle samples were observed. The longest and the slenderest sarcocysts were found in the diaphragm. Slightly smaller in the oesophagus and the smallest ones in the heart muscle tissue. The average size of sarcocysts isolated from diaphragm was 957.6 mm x 112.7 mm. Sarcocysts found in the oesophagus measured 484.1 mm x 194.6 mm and those isolated from the heart muscle attained 305.4 mm x 103.9 m

A three-year-old elk was necropsied in Kampinos Forest, near the village of Granica. An analysis of a 3g faecal sample from the animal revealed the presence of 130 oocysts of Eimeria catubrina. The parasite is typical of roe deer; this study is only the second reported observation of E. catubrina in elks. As coccidia are so rarely found in elks, this observation of E. catubrina in this new localization is a matter of concern.

Forming of gastro-intestinal nematodes fauna of free ranging European bison in Białowieża Primeval Forest during last 17 years (1984-2001). 28 European bison of both sexes and in different age shot in Bialowieża Primeval Forest in January 1984, (10 animals), January 1992 (10 animals) and in January and the beginning of February 2001 (8 animals) have been necropsied. The examined animals in mentioned years were of similar age. There were examined abomasa and duodena of shot animals. All necropsied bison were infected with gastro-intestinal nematodes. The bighest intensity of infection with nematodcs of abomasum was found in 1992 year and with nematodes of duodenum in 2001 year. In the examined period were found as many as 21 species of gastro-intestinal nematodes, and 15 of them occurred in 1984, 16 in 1992 and 17 in 2001; 12 species, namely: Trichostrongylus axei, T. capricola, Ostertagia ostertagi, O. lyrata, O. leptospicularis, O. kolchida, Spiculopteragia boehmi, Cooperia oncophora. Nematodirus helventianus, N. roscidus. N. europaeus and Aonchotheca bilobata occurred in all 3 examined years. The highest mean intensity of infection and the percentage index of intensity of these 12 species of nematodes showed O. leptospicularis which was 45% to 47% of all Ostertagiinae. Beyond of these 12 species of nematodes which occurred in all examined years, there were found 9 species more: Ostertagia antipini, Spiculopteragia mathevossiani, S. asymmetrica, Mazamastrongylus dagestanicus, Cooperia surnabada, C. punctata, C. pectinata, Haemonchus placei and Ashworthius sidemi. They occurred sporadically and in low density. During the examined period, bison have adapted 10 species of parasites from Cervides. Mazamastrongylus dagestanicus -parasite primary typical for moose, was for the first time found in bison.

Four free living European bison from Białowieża/Caucasus line shot in february 1997 within Lutowiska Forestry District in the Bieszczady Mountains were used in investigations. All examined ani mais were infected with helminths. There were found 10 species of parasites. Five species of them Ostertagia leptospicularis, O. kolchida, Spiculopteragia boehmi, Cooperia pectinata and Ashworthius sidemi are thypical parasites of Cervides, and from them were infected bison in Bieszczady. In all necropsied animals was found invasion of nematode A. sidemi, with mean intensity 1542 specimens. It is the first registration of A. sidemi in Poland and European bison is a new host for this parasite. It seems that the source of infection A. sidemi in European bison in Bieszczady is the local population of deer, which during their migrations could bring this parasite from neighbouring Ukraine and Slovakia, where this nematode have been introduced together with deer Cervus nippon. There are also presented results of coproscopic examinations of 17 fecal samples from free living European bison in Bieszczady.

A total of 114 elk faecal samples from the Polesie National Park and adjacent forest districts were examined in 2013 and 2014. Three samples were positive. The positive samples were from the village of Wereszczyn, the Sobibor forest district, and the Polesie National Park and Forest district, Parczew. Morphometric examination revealed that the oocysts belong to the species Eimeria alces. This is the second identification of the parasite in elk in Poland and the fifth worldwide.

Opis:
Asworthius sidemi Schulz, 1933 is a blood sucking gastrointestinal nematode, primarily typical for Asiatic deer. It was found for the first time in Poland in European bison in 1997. To estimate the level of invasion of A. sidemi and histopathological changes connected with the presence of the parasite in the years 2004-2007 parasitological and histopathological examinations of 54 European bison from Białowieża Forest were carried out. Parasitological examination was carried out by the sedimentation method and A. sidemi were diagnosed under a binocular microscope. Samples for histological examination were collected from the abomasum and duodenum walls as well as from regional lymph nodes. Tissue samples were then fixed with 10% buffered formalin, embedded in paraffin, cut in to 5 μm thick sections and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). Parasitological examinations showed the presence of fourth stage larvae and juvenile forms of A. sidemi. The maximal intensity of invasion rose systematically from 4470 A. sidemi nematodes in 2004/2005 to 44310 in 2006/2007. Histopathological examinations showed infiltrations of inflammatory cells in the walls of abomasa and duodena at various levels of intensity (mainly lymphoid cells and eosinophils), hyperemiae, oedemae and lesions of mucosa and proliferation of lymphatic follicles. In individual cases of dysplasia of epithelial cells, atrophy or hyperplasia of glands and the presence of parasites in the lumen or walls of the abomasum/duodenum were observed. In one case, parasitic nodules were found. In regional lymph nodes proliferation of lymphatic follicles, presence of eosinophils and desolation of reproduction centers were observed. Intensification of histopathological changes was connected to a considerable degree with the developmental stage of A. sidemi as shown by parasitological examination.

Parasitological autopsy of 31 european bisons, 9 red-deers and 3 roe-deers was made in Białowieża Forest in the period 1983-1988. Together 20 species of nematods were found, from them as much as 18 in bisons, 6 in red-deers and 8 in roe-deers. The highest intensity and 100% of extensity was shown by nematods from subfamily Ostertagiinae. Four species of this subfamily (O. leptospicularis, O. kolchida, S. boehmi i S. mathevossiani) have been permanently adapted by bisons from cervids, however two species of nematods typical for bisons and cattle (O. ostertagii and O. lyrata) have not been adopted by deers. Besides, bisons adopted from deers the following species of nematods: T. capricola, C. pectinata; N. roscidus, N. europaeus and from moose N. alcidis. Bisons gave to red-deers only C. bilobata, and roe-deers have not adopted any nematods from bisons. B. trigonocephalum and S. dagestanica found in roe-deers are in Poland typical parasites of mooses.

Opis:

Opis:
The examination of 18 abomasums and 23 excrement samples of red deer from the Strzałowo Forest District (Pisz Primeval Forest) showed infestation of these animals with 6 gastric−intestinal nematode species (Spiculopteragia boehmi, Ostertagia leptospicularis, Ostertagia kolchida, Spiculopteragia mathevossiani, Trichostrongylus axei and Nematodirus roscidus) and 3 pulmonary nematode species (Elaphostrongylus cervi, Varestrongylus sagittatus and Dictyocaulus eckerti). As a result of performed disinfestation, the average infestation level of the animals with S. boehmi nematodes and female nematodes from the family Ostertagiinae was reduced and the infestation with D. eckerti was eliminated.

Opis:
In the Białowieża Forest the parasitological autopsy of large intestine of 6 bisons was made at the beginning of winter of 1987-1988, and 9 dissections were made in the latter part of both seasons. Four species of nematodes were found to occur together: Chabertia ovina, Oesophagostomum radiatum, Oe. venulosum and Trichocephalus ovis. At the end of wintering in bisons the invasion of Ch. ovina appeared in high percent of animals, but the intensity of it was low. However the extensity and intensity of invasion of three remaining species of nematodes distinctly arose. In comparison with bisons in closed reserves, free living bisons assimilated Oe. venulosum and Ch. ovina. It is likely that the winter quarters are the source of invasion. It can be explained by the permanent accumulation of feaces with invasive forms of nematodes, and by feeding bisons on the great amount of hay, in which the invasive forms of nematodes may also occur.
