Opis:
Let (X, F, μ) be a finite measure space, and φ an invertible, nonsingular transformation on (X, F, μ). We prove that the Pointwise Ergodic Theorem (P.E.T.) in $L_p(d\mu)$ holds for the operator $ T f = f \circ \phi $ if, and only if, it holds for the formal adjoint of T in $ L_q(d \mu ) (1//p + 1//q = 1) $. We also characterize the P.E.T. in terms of the Radon-Nikodym derivative of the measure μ with respect to an invariant measure.

Opis:
X-ray-diffraction microstructural analysis was performed for corundum powders produced from Bayer aluminium hydroxides in different ways and for high purity corundum powders produced from other raw materials. Crystalline microstructure characterised by prevalent crystallite shape, volume-weighted crystallite size distribution and second-order crystalline lattice strain distribution was determined through modelling crystallite shapes as hexagonal prisms, with the resulting mean volume-weighted standardised crystallite size in the range 406-1941 Å, height-to-base-diagonal ratio in the range 0.68-0.94 and the mean-absolute second-order strain in the range 0.028-0.087%. Crystallite size distributions were found to be well approximated as bimodal logarithmic-normal ones and consequently four types of microstructure were recognized as depending on precursors and methods of production.

Opis:
We characterize the pairs of weights on ℝ for which the operators $M_{h,k}^{+}f(x) = \underset{\text{sup}}{c>x}h(x,c) \int_{x}^{c} f(s)k(x,s,c)ds$ are of weak type (p,q), or of restricted weak type (p,q), 1 ≤ p < q < ∞, between the Lebesgue spaces with the coresponding weights. The functions h and k are positive, h is defined on ${(x,c): x < c}$, while k is defined on ${(x,s,c): x < s < c}$. If $h(x,c) = (c-x)^{-β}$, $k(x,s,c) = (c-s)^{α-1}$, 0 ≤ β ≤ α ≤ 1, we obtain the operator $M_{α,β}^{+}f = \underset{c>x}{\text{sup}} 1/(c-x)^{β} \int_{x}^{c} f(s)/(c-s)^{1-α} ds$. For this operator, under the assumption 1/p - 1/q = α - β, we extend the weak type characterization to the case p = q and prove that in the case of equal weights and 1 < p < ∞, weak and strong type are equivalent. If we take α = β we characterize the strong type weights for the operator $M_{α,α}^{+}$ introduced by W. Jurkat and J. Troutman in the study of $C_α$ differentiation of the integral.

Opis:
Some of the most recent technologies that improves the performance in continuous casting process has installed infrastructure outside the mold to modify the natural fluid flow pattern to obtain a quasi-steady condition and promote a uniform solidified shell of steel. The submerged entry nozzle distributes the liquid steel in the mold and can be used to obtain the flow symmetry condition with external geometry improvements. The fluid flow conditioners were located near the outlet ports of the nozzle. The aim of the modifiers is to impose a pseudo symmetric pattern in the upper zone of the mold by inhibiting the fluid exchange between the zones created by conditioners. This work evaluates the effect of the thickness and length of the fluid-flow modifiers on the overall performance of the submerged nozzle. These properties of the fluid-flow modifiers were normalized based on two of the geometric dimensions of the standard equipment. Numerical and physical simulations suggest that the flow modifier should be as thin as possible.
