Opis:
To study the generation of exciton polaritons in a quantum well embedded in a semiconductor Fabry-Pérot microcavity with distributed Brag reflectors, a simple semi-classical auxiliary differential equation based model is proposed. The solutions are obtained using FDTD method considering only the excitations from ground to next excited states and one single QW resonance. The simulations are presented for GaAs quantum well in Al0.1Ga0.9As microcavity and a ZnS quantum well embedded in CdSe microcavity with 12 DBR layers on either side. Model is proved to be stable and agrees with properties of polarization associated with polariton dispersion. Results show that GaAs is a better quantum well material to generate polaritons than CdSe.

Opis:
Detergents at waters inducing negative changes for biological degradability and water general quality. Some authors have evidenced a considerable amount of anionic surfactant and toxic effects into natural water and effluents related to detergents. The objective of the study was to apply electron irradiation for reducing toxicity, and for degradation of surfactants. To quantify surfactant LAS determination as MBAS (metylene blue active substances) was applied. The capacity of radiation to reduce surfactants was evidenced for real effluent and for water solution containing sodium dodecyl sulfate, linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), separately. An electron beam accelerator (EBA) 1.5 MeV was the radiation source. Anionic surfactant solutions as well as real effluents resulted in less toxic samples after irradiation. Toxicity was evaluated for Vibrio fischeri and Daphnia similis. An important decline of total anionic surfactant was observed after irradiation to doses: 6.0 kGy and 20 kGy (surfactant in water solutions and effluents, respectively). To conclude, EBA irradiations accounted for 88% to 96% less toxic surfactants solutions and effluents and 68% to 96% for MBAS compounds decomposition.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Recently, investigations in a swine herd identified evidence of the existence of a novel member of the Hepadnavirus family endemic in swine. The aim of this study was to investigate the serological and molecular markers of Hepadnavirus circulation in Brazilian domestic swine and wild boar herds, and to evaluate the identity with HBV and other Hepadnaviruses reported previously. Materials and methods. For the study, 376 swine were screened for hepatitis B virus serological markers. Analyses were performed in serum samples using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits (DiaSorin®) for anti-HBc, HBsAg and anti-HBs. Reactive and undetermined swine serum samples were selected to perform DNA viral extraction (QIAamp DNA Mini Kit, Qiagen®), partial genome amplification and genome sequencing. Results. From 376 swine samples analysed, 28 (7.45%) were reactive to anti-HBc, 3 (0.80%) to HBsAg and 6 (1.6%) to anti-HBs. Besides, more 17 (4.52%) swine samples analyzed were classified in the grey zone of the EIA test to anti-HBc and 2 (0.53%) to HBsAg. From 49 samples molecularly analyzed after serological trial, 4 samples showed a positive result for the qualitative PCR for Hepadnavirus. Phylogenetic reconstruction using partial genome sequencing (360 bp) of 3 samples showed similarity with HBV with 90.8–96.3% of identity. Conclusions. Serological and molecular data showed evidence of the circulation of a virus similar to hepatitis B virus in swine.
