Opis:
Synthesizing Thomism and phenomenology, this paper compares the kind of reflective thinking and willing that goes on in penitential acts to Edmund Husserl’s method of the phenomenological εποχή (epoche). Analyzing penance up through the act of contrition, it first shows it to have three primary acts: (1) the examination of conscience, (2) the reordering of the will and (3) the resolve not to sin again in regret. After presenting this Thomistic conception of contrition in detail, it then focuses on the essence of Husserl’s εποχή as a method intended to “suspend” certain beliefs in order to discover the truth about knowledge. In conclusion, it shows that a particular form of the εποχή—a penitential εποχή—must be employed in these three penitential acts so that a disposition of grace may be made present in the penitent.

The surge of diversified forms of regionalism and regional integration within the past few decades has stimulated the reappraisal of the conceptual tools traditionally designed to bench-mark and monitor region-building processes across the world. More recently, the Brexit negotiations have become a reminder that the EU remains an unfolding experience. This article argues that the study of African regionalisms constitutes a timely invitation to revisit the experience of the EU and its contribution to the world of regionalisms. After a brief survey of the classic definition of the region, we will discuss the ongoing relevance of European integration and the implications of the analytical distinction between regionalism, regionalisation and regional integration, before drawing from the study of Africa five threads which set the basis for a comparative study of regions and regionalisms beyond the classic emphasis on the EU or the world of regions.

This is the first of a two-part study treating Karol Wojtyła’s Aristotelian methodology. The study shows that Wojtyła’s inductive and reductive methodology is identical with the Aristotelian method of proceeding from what is better-known to us in experience (ἐμπειρία/empeiria) to what is better-known to nature by way of induction (ἐπαγωγή/epagoge) and analysis (ἀνάλῠσις/analusis) or division (διαίρεσις/diairesis). By a rigorous presentation of this Aristotelian methodology here in Part I, the logical form and force of Wojtyła’s method is properly disclosed and appreciated in Part II. Wojtyła’s method utilizes the logical forms of reductio ad impossibile and reasoning on the hypothesis of the end, or effect-cause reasoning, which is special to the life sciences and the power-object model of definition. By this methodology, Wojtyła obtains definitive knowledge of the human person that is necessary and undeniable: he discloses the εἶδος (eidos) or species of the person in the Aristotelian, Thomistic, and Phenomenological sense of the term.

This is the second of a two-part study treating Karol Wojtyła’s Aristotelian methodology. Having presented Aristotle’s method of induction (ἐπαγωγή/epagoge) and analysis (ἀνάλῠσις/analusis) or division (διαίρεσις/diairesis) in Part I, Part II discloses the logical form and force of Wojtyła’s method of induction and reduction as Aristotelian induction and division. Looking primarily to the introduction to The Acting Person, it is shown that Wojtyła utilizes the logical forms of reductio ad impossibile and reasoning on the hypothesis of the end, or effect-cause reasoning, which is special to the life sciences and the power-object model of definition as set down by Aristotle. The line graph of a graph with signed edges carries vertex signs. A vertex-signed graph is consistent if every circle (cycle, circuit) has positive vertex-sign product. Acharya, Acharya, and Sinha recently characterized line-consistent signed graphs, i.e., edge-signed graphs whose line graphs, with the naturally induced vertex signature, are consistent. Their proof applies Hoede’s relatively difficult characterization of consistent vertex-signed graphs. We give a simple proof that does not depend on Hoede’s theorem as well as a structural description of line-consistent signed graphs.

While the catholic intellectual tradition upholds the uniqueness of humans, much contemporary scientific research has come to the opposing conclusion that humans are not significantly different from other animals. to engage in robust dialogue around the question of human uniqueness, we utilize Aquinas’s model of disputatio to focus on an attribute of human beings that is unexplored in the literature – namely, the human capacity to garden – and address five scientific and philosophical objections to our position that the capacity to garden makes humans distinct. engaging with various branches of science, we demonstrate that human capacities and modes of gardening are not only incrementally different, but also fundamentally different in kind, from those of nonhuman creatures. Philosophically, we utilize the power-object model of division and Aristotle’s categorization of knowledge to express the difference in kind between human beings and other animals. these responses allow us to set aside each major objection.

Quantitative analysis/interpretation was undetaken on an aeromagnetic data covering latitude 6°00’-6°30’N and longitude 7°00’-7°30’E of Mmaku area, South Eastern, Nigeria by means of spectral depth analysis and Euler Deconvolution. To determine the sedimentary thickness or the depth to basement peculiar within the area, regional-residual separation was applied on the total aeromagnetic data. The resulting residual was divided into overlapping sixteen (16) spectral grids using Ms Excel. This was saved in Comma Separated Variable (CSV) format and thus imported into Origin Pro software where Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) or spectral analysis was performed on the windowed or gridded residual. The residual data was also imported into Oasis Montaj software for Standard 3D Euler Deconvolution. The result of the spectral analysis shows that the depth to various causative sources vary from 3.472 km to 6.972 km for the deeper sources, with average thickness of 5.010 km and 1.177 km to 1.834 km for the shallower sources, with average value of 1.047 km. From the Euler depth solutions, depth values ranging from 1525.74 km to 2919.21 km was revealed using structural index (SI) of 1 while depth values of 2290.49 km to 4447.62 km and 925. 93 km to 5790.49 km was observed when SI of 2 and 3 respectively were chosen. This study presents, therefore, suitable sedimentary thickness for hydrocarbon exploration to exist within the area.

The focus of this research is to delineate subsurface structures as well as their edges by interpreting a high resolution aeromagnetic data via qualitative approach. The study area lies between Latitude 6°00’- 6°30’N and Longitude 7°00’ - 7°30’E in Enugu state, south-east Nigeria. Regional-residual separation algorithm was applied on the total magnetic intensity aeromagnetic map in order to generate the residual and regional maps. On the resulting residual data, further enhancement techniques like the upward continuation at 5 km, 10 km and 20 km, band pass, high pass and low pass enhancement technique/filtering actions were undertaken. Result of the qualitative analysis shows that the study area is characterized by numerous faults and fractures expressed as NNE-SSW, E-W, N-S, NE-SW, NW-SE, and ENE-WSW tectonic trends. The NE-SW and NW-SE tectonic trends indicate that the area is affected by the charcot and oceanic fractures that existed within offshore Niger Delta, Nigeria while the ENE-WSW. NNE-SSW, E-W and N-S tectonic trends exemplify that the separation of Africa from South America affected the area.

Multi-nuclear mixed-valence clusters V$\text{}_{4}^{IV}$V$\text{}_{2}^{V}$O$\text{}_{7}$(OCH$\text{}_{3}$)$\text{}_{12}$ were studied by X-band EPR in the temperature range 4.2-300 K. An isotropic exchange interactions between four V$\text{}^{IV}$ ions with individual spin S$\text{}_{i}$=1/2 determine the energy levels structure of the compound with the total spin states S=0, 1, and 2, which are doubled and split due to the extra electron transfer. The spin-Hamiltonian approach was used for the analysis of the temperature dependences of the EPR spectra parameters and the cluster dynamics. Two types of the electron transfer are assumed: the single jump transfer leading to the splitting of the total spin states by intervals comparable in magnitude with the exchange parameter J≈100-150 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ and the double jump one resulting in dynamics. The dependence of the transition ratesν$\text{}_{tr}$ on the energy of the total spin states was observed. In particular, in the range 300-220 K theν$\text{}_{tr}$ ≈0.7×10$\text{}^{10}$ cm$\text{}^{-1}$ and below 180 K the ν$\text{}_{tr}$≈1×10$\text{}^{10}$ cm$\text{}^{-1}$ was estimated. The g-factors of the spin states were shown to depend on the values of the intermediate spins. A phase transition in the T-range 210-180 K leading to the change in the initial V$\text{}^{IV}$ ions localization was discovered.

The paper presents a method of measuring temperature of a milk and an air mixture in a teat cup during machine milking. With a newly introduced concept of a „time-impuls” we have presented characteristics of the outflow of milk from a teat. Measurements were done with 4 sensors placed in the liner channel, what restricts the stream flow ouside the measurement area. The frequency of the measurement was 5/sec. The increase of measurement frequency above the pulsation rate enables us to measure momentary values of the temperature of milk and air mixture. The analysis of the obtained empirical data and of „time impulses” makes it possible to determine time structure of the outflow of milk from the teat.

Opis:
Lately, different therapy strategies for treating or slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease are being analyzed. Moreover, the last two decades have seen a considerable research effort directed towards discovering the causes of Alzheimer's disease with the ultimate hope of developing safe and effective pharmacological treatments. In addition to the therapeutic strategies based on targeted drugs, the regimens will require the simultaneous application of neuroprotective drugs. Therefore, although there is currently no "cure" for Alzheimer's disease, a large number of potential therapeutic strategies emerged lately. In this small mini-review we will selectively describe some of the compounds derived from plants that could have a great potential in the treatment of various diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. In this way, there are many plant species that have been traditionally used for memory disorders. The differentiated results and powerful activity of these extracts are making these neuroprotective strategies to be somehow plausible for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. In addition, these plants can be examined in order to isolate and identify their active ingredients and this can serve as a starting point to find safer and more effective agents for therapeutic use. On thing is certain: as the effective treatment options are limited, there is a demand for new drugs. Thus, plant extracts or vegetal compounds could represent an important part in this equation.

BackgroundThe authors’ aim was to study the dynamics of oxidative stress in experimental exposure to silica dust, to evaluate the histopathological findings in the phase preceding the formation of fibrous/fibrohyaline pulmonary nodules, and to assess the effects of curcumin administration.Material and MethodsThe research was performed on 48 male Wistar rats with an average weight of 320 g. Overall, 38 rats were instilled with a single dose of 0.3 ml suspension containing 30 mg of a SiO2/ml saline solution, and were sacrificed 30, 90 and 120 days after instillation; 14 of those sacrificed on days 90 and 120 also received curcumin. The control group included 10 animals which were instilled with a saline solution. Malondialdehyde (MDA), carbonyl proteins (CPs), total thiolic proteins (TPs) and reduced glutathione (GSH) were determined in blood and the lung tissue. The standard technique for pulmonary toxicology developed by Porter was applied to semi-quantitatively assess the histopathological findings.ResultsIt was found that MDA had increased significantly early on in both biological environments and remained elevated, and adding curcumin proved beneficial, while CPs only increased moderately in the lung tissue without a curcumin impact. Moreover, TPs dropped abruptly, significantly and persistently in the lung tissue and blood, and were not influenced by curcumin. Finally, GSH decreased significantly and intensely in the lung tissue and blood, with curcumin lowering the levels towards those found within the control group. The histopathological examination identified nodules of a cellular type, without any fibrosis, but with spots of associated lipoproteinosis. The early lesions in the airways and vessels were suggestive of a remodeling process. Curcumin diminished the occurrence of alveolitis but not the remodeling process.ConclusionsThe study confirms the early onset of oxidative stress in experimental silicosis. It also simultaneously and dynamically researches markers of oxidative stress in blood and the lung tissue. Curcumin proved beneficial on oxidative stress and lesions in the alveolar epithelia, but ineffective in preventing vascular and airway remodeling. Med Pr. 2021;72(3):239–47
