    The author considers the problem of relation between the so called minimalist theories of truth and relativism in philosophy - trying to answer the question: Does minimalism in the theory of truth result in relativism? In order to make the above question more precise, the author takes two steps. Initially, she defines minimalism (deflationism) with respect to truth in philosophy, enumerates various theories which are counted as deflationary and submits basic claims of deflationary views trying to find their theoretical hard-core. She takes Paul Horwich's deflationary theory of truth as a representative example of minimalist approaches and present the goals which Horwich is trying to reach in this theory. She points out its elementary assumption and Horwich's solution to the problem of truth. Afterwards, the author confronts the problem of relativism. Firstly, she distinguishes various ways of understanding the very notion of 'relativism'. Secondly, she points out what kind of relativism can be dangerous (and why) in philosophy. Finally, she concludes that minimalism in the theory of truth does not result in such philosophically dangerous standpoint.

    Opis:
    The author characterize Paul Horwich's view on truth formulated in his deflationary theory of truth. She presents selected problems which arise when one analyze the elements of the theory in a more detailed way. She investigates the mentioned problems in order to show the importance of such categories like truth, acceptance, understanding, proposition and property for philosophy of language. The author concludes with a claim that philosophical acceptance (or antipathy) for minimalism in theory of truth is connected with some metaphysical assumptions which are taken for granted in advance.

    The author considers the way contemporary genetics employs the notion of the gene. She studies its history and contemporary senses, being especially interested in how genetics defines sex. She presents the history of seeking for genetically defined masculinity pointing out how it has established oversimplified model of the phenomenon of biological sex. She underlines the role of feminist critiques in developing less narrow-minded views of sex in biology. The author shows that biology and especially genetics has promised to resolve doubts concerning human nature and the nature of sexes. Making this kind of promises can be interpreted as a special way of dealing with human fears which have appeared together with development of contemporary science and modern technologies and its impact on the world. It concerns especially fears of the interventions in natural environment and applications of the results of the research in genetics to medicine, both of which change the society and its values. When genetics has promised to find causal correlations between given genes and organisms’ properties, it was supposed to explain the source of diseases or even human personalities or specific social relations. Unequivocal explanations were needed to calm us down, to reduce fears, to allow us to state that this is how we are „by nature” made. As it turned out genetics was not able to fulfilled these promises for as the author is going to show, its objects of studies are more complex and complicated than the genetics have assumed.

    The article provides a compact review of the early modern science views of the nature of science, scientific method and knowledge, rationality and objec- tivity with respect to masculinity and femininity. Following primarily Galileo and Bacon's work, the author is interested in pointing out the most important ideas of the historically fixed ways of how people imagined the acquisition of knowledge, presented nature, understood the role of researchers, as well as what metaphors they applied in defining knowledge. Due to the vast and di- verse material, the aim is not to sketch a complete and detailed portrait of the ideal of modern science, but to explore to what extent gender-related issues were of any significance here.

Autorka sytuuje rozważania amerykańskiej filozofki i biolożki na tle jej wcześniejszych książek i propozycji konceptualnych. Analizuje jej propozycję posługiwania się kategoriami chthulucenu zamiast antropocenu, systemu sympojetycznego zamiast autopojetycznego, przedstawia jej apel o tworzenie nowych form pokrewieństwa i rozbudowanej odpowiedzialności za siebie nawzajem.
    The aim of the article is to discuss the basic assumptions, theses and solutions of Donna Haraway’s book “Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene”.     This article presents methods of effective treatment of primary metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma, both causative and symptomatic, taking into account possible available treatment therapies (chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiotherapy), and includes a case report. The applied treatment allowed for satisfactory control of the disease and much higher overall survival than expected – the patient survived for 53 months from the initial diagnosis and 41 months from being diagnosed with metastatic carcinoma.

    W późnych latach sześćdziesiątych dwudziestego wieku słynny socjolog Robert Merton zauważył, że system nauki i instytucje naukowe funkcjonują w przedziwny sposób. Przyznają zasługi znanym już naukowcom; znacznie też częściej cytuje się ich prace, a ich badania uznaje się za wybitne i wyjątkowe. Opisywane zjawisko nazwał on „efektem Mateusza” i opisał jego dobroczynne działanie dla systemu nauki. Ponad dwadzieścia lat później amerykańska socjolożka i historyczka nauki Margaret Rossiter zauważyła komplementarny wobec opisywanego proces odmiennej dystrybucji uznania za osiągnięcia naukowe ze względu na płeć. Jak zauważyła, kobiety naukowczynie są często ignorowane, odmawia się im uznania, ich badania są przemilczane, a czasami zupełnie zapomniane. Nazwała to „zjawiskiem Matyldy” na cześć sufrażystki i krytyczki feministycznej Matyldy Joslyn Gage. W artykule omawiam zjawisko swoistego systemowego wymazywania kobiet z historii nauki, umniejszania ich zasług w nauce, kulturowego przemilczania i osłabiania ich roli dla rozwoju poszczególnych dziedzin, wreszcie, pomijania zmiennej płci jako istotnej dla krytycznego badania nauki. W tym celu zestawiam ze sobą rozważania Mertona nad tak zwanym „efektem Mateusza” z analizami Margaret Rossiter dotyczącymi „zjawiska Matyldy”. By zilustrować mechanizmy działania tego ostatniego, przypominam historię działalności naukowej dwóch wybitnych badaczek, chemiczki i krystalografki Rosalind Franklin i biolożki Ruth Hubbard.
    In late 1960’s the famous sociologist Robert Merton pointed out that the system of institutional science functions in a very peculiar way, namely, it distributes merits to scientists who are already known. As a result, their papers are cited more frequently and their research is highly evaluated already in advance. Merton called this tendency the ‘Matthew Effect’ and showed its advantageous results for institutionalized science. More than twenty years later the American historian of science Margaret Rossiter noticed a complementary phenomenon which consists in a division of the recognition of scientific achievements in relation to gender. According to Rossiter, women scientists have been ignored, denied appreciation and sometimes forgotten. She has labelled this phenomenon the ‘Matilda Effect’ in order to honour the suffragist and feminist critic Matilda Joslyn Gage. The aim of the present article is to examine specific mechanisms responsible for the systematic erasing of women from the history of science, which is connected with devaluation of their scientific achievements and with a reduction of their role in the development of certain scientific domains. Generally speaking, the ‘Matilda Effect’ amounts to silencing women in scientific culture. Additionally, the author refers to the ignorance of the gender factor as a significant issue in the critical approach to science. In the article Merton’s analysis is juxtaposed with Rossiter’s observations. In order to describe the functioning of the ‘Matilda effect’ in a more detailed way, I discuss the history of the scientific activity of two prominent female scientists: Rosalind Franklin, a chemist and crystallographer, and Ruth Hubbard, a biologist.
