CULTURE CHANGE
SOUTH-EASTERN POLAND
MIGRATIONS AND THEIR CHANGES
Opis:
The article discusses the origins of aspects of cultural change using the example of archaeological cultures in south-eastern Poland, and with special reference to the meso-region of the lower Wisłok River. This study concludes that it is difficult to identify local roots in a traditional cultural-historical sense for most cultures within the study area. Attention is therefore focused on migrations and other population movements, as well as more complex external impacts on local populations, which are regarded as the main factors stimulating cultural change. In addition, some transformations and formations of new units may be due to local development (evolution) of cultures.

The article analyses issues related to the protection of archaeological heritage, understood holistically, i.e. traditional conservation (sites protection in situ) and museology (ex post protection). Providing numerous examples and quoting the opinions of other archaeologists, the author confirms the diagnosis of inefficiency of the current system of protection, its numerous gaps and inconsistencies. In conclusion the author presents a proposal for a new legal regulation - the Act on the Protection of Archaeological Heritage.

Opis:
Since 2018, Polish science has been in a state of change (reform), together with the evaluation of scientific disciplines which is the most important element of it. Its result depends on the scoring achievements assigned to the publication. That is why, the list of journals and scores assigned to them are so important . The list was introduced by the decision of the Minister of Science and Higher Education. Journals that received 20, 40, 70, 140 and 200 points were presented on this list. The „Materials and Reports of the Rzeszów Archaeological Centre”, published since 1961, have not been included in this catalogue. This means that the articles published in it can be scored only 5 points in the evaluation. This paper emphasizes the enormous achievements of this journal and presents its systematic transformation towards a high scientific and editorial level. It also argues with the criteria that were adopted in the evaluation of journals. Moreover, it strongly disputes with the statement that „Materials and Reports of the Rzeszów Archaeological Centre” is a regional journal, noting that it is no more regional publication than many others, with up to 70 points assigned. The presented considerations have a more general dimension. The attention has been paid to fundamental changes in Polish archaeology that have taken place in recent years. Therefore, against this background, the elimination of titles, whose mission is primarily to publish archaeological sources, from the set of scored journals is a very large institutional threat.

Opis:
On December 12, 2018, an outstanding Polish archaeologist – Professor Tadeusz Malinowski died in Poznań. He left an enormous scientific legacy, particularly studies devoted to the funeral rite in the Bronze Age and the early Iron Age (Lusatian and Pomeranian cultures). The article briefly discusses the major publications of the Professor, paying attention to the groups of issues they concern. His publications include a very wide range of works that are different in terms of form (reviews and polemics, monographs, catalogues, problem articles) and content (works from the Stone Age to the modern period, interdisciplinary and synthetic problems). A substantial part of the article is devoted to the connections of Professor Tadeusz Malinowski with the Rzeszów archaeological centre. It was him who provided the book collection (together with author’s prints), which became the basis of the Library of the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Rzeszów, created since 1999. Professor actively participated in scientific conferences organized in Rzeszów, he was interested in its scientific life, especially publications. He participated in the preparation of some of them as a reviewer. He highly evaluated the activities of the Institute of Archaeology, writing in 2016 that „it is one of the leading ones in our country”.

The paper points to the limited scientific value of the results of the so-called investor studies of large-scale development-led (motorway) research. The studies have been confronted with the artefacts they were based on, and significant discrepancies in their cultural and chronological classification have been revealed. In the opinion of the author, the principle of limited trust should be applied to the studies contained in the archives. Additionally, the paper identifies the mechanisms responsible for such a situation.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the disappearance of the Lusatian cultural circle, also traditionally called the Lusatian culture or, in more recent literature, the Lusatian urnfields. At the beginning, terminological issues are clarified and views on the disappearance of this cultural unit, which played an important role in Central Europe in the middle of the 2nd and 1st millennium BC, are presented. The main analytical part focuses on four regions within today’s borders of Poland – north-western, north-eastern, south-western and south-eastern. This is due to the sharply outlined foreign cultural features that are particularly sharp in these regions. This applies to the infiltration of the Jastorf culture (and earlier Nordic influences), the Baltic circle, the Hallstatt cultural complex and the Eastern European nomadic world. They are the aftermath of migration movements of varying intensity and chronology, but always within the early Iron Age (9th/8th–5th centuries BC). Signs of the structural crisis of the local Lusatian communities, which are very fragmented and do not constitute a cultural monolith, are also important for the considerations undertaken. The issue of changes in the natural environment on the border of the subboreal and subatlantic periods is also considered.

The article raises important formal and organisational issues related to rescue excavations on the routes of motorways in Poland conducted from 1996 and preceding their construction. The authors make evaluation of consecutive stages of the works – from the selection of contractors through correct excavation studies and making available their results by scientific publication and of educational projects (exhibitions, popularisation). They pay attention to the role of motorway studies in the transformation of the Polish archeology.

Opis:
Tarnobrzeg Lusatian culture is a cultural unit distinguished in south-eastern Poland, spanning from the middle Bronze Age to the early Iron Age (and thus roughly from the 14th/13th to the 5th/4th century BC). One of its most characteristic features are large crematory cemeteries (the largest consisting of more than a thousand tombs), utilized for many centuries. For many of them, apart from standard archaeological information, we also possess anthropological analysis, perfect for demographic considerations. One can specify the size and structure of the population which used the cemetery, as well as study the dynamics of changes in the course of a long period of burying the dead in the same place. Such an analysis in the form of social microstructure research is the basis of inference at a higher level, including mesoregions settlement, characterized by a network of co-occurring cemeteries and accompanying settlements. The sum of these observations, in turn, allows us to estimate the number of people living in the territory assigned to Tarnobrzeg Lusatian culture. At each level of inference in terms of population size, a crucial role is played by possibly the most accurate and precise estimation of time of cemetery usage or the presence of settlements in the analyzed region.

Opis:
Archaeological studies need to use laboratory techniques, including analytical methods like Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, gas chromatography – mass spectrometry, and high-performance liquid chromatography, as well as genetic methods to resolve and verify scientific hypotheses. However, additional tools are still needed in the case of the cultural practices and traditions of ancient societies. Archaeological examinations of cultural practices have made significant progress in recent years, but additional tools are still needed to fully understand the complexity and diversity of these practices. In this work, we demonstrate how the genotyping of soil bacteria that can produce endospores is a potentially additional method for discovering past funeral rituals in various human populations who used food during their ceremonies. Endospores were isolated from soil samples taken from inside earthenware cup and pot-type vessels from a burial ground identified with the Tarnobrzeg Lusatian culture (SE Poland). The detected species of spore-forming bacteria strains were mostly environmental (originating from soil and / or water). However, the presence of some of the taxa i.e. (Peanibacillus, Bacillus) may provide a valuable source of archaeological information. We found that a combination of molecular and microbiological analysis can support archaeological studies of burial grounds and – in particular – individual graves, especially when they are characterized by a complete lack of bones.

The article presents the results of the trial excavations carried out in 2016 at the fortified settlement in Chotyniec, Jarosław district. It is an object which has been known and mentioned in archaeological literature for a long, but without its precise chronological affiliation, due to the lack of excavations. However, it was most often combined with the Middle Ages. The conducted research requires significant adjustments. All the sources and contextual records allow us to link this large fortified settlement in Chotyniec with the Early Iron Age and the forest steppe variant of the Scythian cultural circle. This unique site will be researched in the next excavation seasons.
