Opis:
The figure of Ivan Franko is a unique phenomenon in Ukrainian literature and culture due to the diversity of his interests, erudition and rich literary, academic and journalistic legacy. His impressive output comprises six thousand publications, including poetry (ten volumes published in the years 1876-1914), prose (nine novels and more than one hundred prosaic forms: short stories, novellas and fables), drama, philosophical and folklore writings as well as critical works concerning literature and history. This vast bibliography encompasses over one thousand texts in Polish (ten poems and forty prosaic texts). The present paper constitutes a review and analysis of the Polish language translations of Franko’s texts, which include self-translations published during his lifetime as well as translations made by other authors.

Opis:
Relocated to Warmia and Mazury in 1947, the Ukrainians comprised 10% of the inhabitants of the region. At present, Ukrainians are the most numerous minority group in Warmia and Mazury, living in the northern part of the region. A report of the Institute of Public Affairs has shown that Warmia and Mazury – as a multicultural and multi-ethnic environment – is a region characterised by a higher tolerance towards otherness and an exceptionally friendly approach towards the Ukrainian minority. This article is an attempt to outline the modern developmental trends with regard to the socio-cultural identity of the Ukrainians who live in the region of Warmia and Mazury. We also mention how their linguistic identification is shaped. Most of the Ukrainians of the older and middle generations equal national identity with using the Ukrainian language in its colloquial dialect or literary variety, while the young Ukrainians associate the language with a purely symbolic status. The youth emphasise that their culture and identity do not have to be expressed through using the Ukrainian language. After 1991, the Ukrainian minority has become increasingly assertive in using the rights granted them, encouraging local governments to subsidy their cultural programmes and support them on the organisational plane. Cooperation at the level of regions, towns, communes and districts has resulted in a number of important cultural events in the region of Warmia and Mazury. Schools also conduct cultural activity, with bands and theatrical groups actively participating in building the multicultural character of the region. The present research has shown that the compulsory cultural contact led to voluntary acculturation of some members of the Ukrainian community, and to a situation in which elements of the Polish culture are interwoven into the Ukrainian cultural heritage.

Opis:
Folklore phraseology was a inexhaustible source of linguistic measures for Ivan Kotliarevsky, as it allowed him to build humorous and satirical effects through introducing into his literary works colloquial, dialectal and jocular set phrases. The aim of this paper is to undertake comparative analysis of set phrases in the original and in the Polish translation of Eneyida in order to point out similarities and differences in these two languages. The author focuses on the translation strategies implemented to translate set phrases, and analysing particular non-phraseme word connections which very often replace set phrases in the target text.

Opis:
Piotr Kupryś was the first Polish translator to fully translate two classical works fundamental for Ukrainian literature. These were: Kobzar by Taras Shevchenko and Eneida by Ivan Kotliarevsky. Kotliarevsky’s Eneida is a vivid example of adapting diverse elements of oral folklore culture in modern Ukrainian literature. The article analyses types of translation procedures the translator applied when dealing with cultural context. Generally speaking, Kupryś followed two strategies of rendering cultural elements: domestication – in order to adapt the target text to target readers’ knowledge; as well as foreignisation with explanation – thanks to which he enriched target readers’ knowledge about reality and culture of the source text.

Opis:
The article aims at presenting an outline of the Ukrainian literature that has been popularised on the Polish publishing market after 1989. The transformation taking place in Ukraine encouraged Poles’ interest in their south-eastern neighbour. This popularity is not yet reflected in their acquaintance with Ukrainian literature published in Poland. This shows that Ukraine is still perceived through a political rather than literary or cultural perspective. The undertaken analysis revealed that the range of Ukrainian literature in translation offered by Polish publishing houses is not, however, as modest as it might be expected judging by its little popularity.

Opis:
The article analyses the speech of the Ukrainian community in Warmia and Mazury after 65 years of its existence in an alien linguistic milieu, which additionally has not been conducive to its religious, political and cultural life. It was the aim of the author to determine the present state of Ukrainian dialects in the constantly growing linguistic pluralism which leads to linguistic assimilation. The research material was collected in the group of respondents who were interviewed by the author. The author limited the range of conversation topics to vocabulary connected with cultivating customs and traditions of different festivals as well as rituals connected with wedding, baptism and funeral. The performed analysis shows that the processes of assimilation threaten both city dwellers as well as villagers. Still, in villages these processes are less visible and even postponed by one generation.

Opis:
Ivan Kotlyarevsky’s Eneyida is a poem rich in paremic elements. The poem was considered a breakthrough in Ukrainian literature, not only because it was written in lively Ukrainian language, but, thanks to the author’s fascination with the folk culture and artistic traditions of previous eras, it also constituted a link between old and new Ukrainian literature. The aim of this article is to investigate the types of translation strategies used by Piotr Kupryś in the translation of Eneyida, especially those concerning paremic elements that are heavily influenced by cultural connotations. The analysis shows that Kotlarewski introduced existing proverbs, and also introduced new ones by processing others. In the Polish translation, Kupryś was not only obliged to preserve the content of the proverbs, but also to reproduce the plasticity of the images on which they were built. The techniques most widely used in his translation include domestication, exotication and tracing. It seems that the translator did manage to extract the meaning of the proverbs; he did not, however, always preserve their expressive and stylistic value, which was the basic element of building the satirical effect of the poem.

This article presents a word formation analysis of adjectival derivatives with a не- prefix in theUkrainian language. Derivatives with the following formants are discussed: -лив-, -им-, -ев- (-ев-),-к- (-ок-, -ек-), -сък- (-цък-), -л-, -уч- (-юч-), -ач- (-яч-), -ущ- (-ющ-). The conducted analysisallows for the following conclusions:1. With regard to derivative bases, the discussed affixal derivatives can be divided into twobasic groups, whose motivation is derived from nominal and verbal derivative bases and roots.2. Derived noun bases fall into the categories of derivative bases and roots, functioning in twogrammatical genders: masculine and feminine. A greater expansiveness in forming suffixal derivativesis indicated by derivative bases, mostly suffixal ones.3. In the Ukrainian language, there is a small group of the so-called polymotivational derivativeswith a double motivation, whose formation can be derived from a particular non-prefix adjectiveor a noun stem.In the Ukrainian language, a numerous group of suffixal derivatives has suppletive suffixalor paradigmatic forms.
