    The article examines the figure of the spy—alongside themes related to espionage—as employed in two books by the Northern Irish writer Ciaran Carson (1948–2019): the volume of poems For All We Know (2008) and the novel Exchange Place (2012). Carson’s oeuvre is permeated with the Troubles and he has been hailed one of key writers to convey the experience of living in a modern surveillance state. His depiction of Belfast thematizes questions of terrorism, the insecurity and anxiety it causes in everyday life, as well as the unceasing games of appearances and the different ways of verifying or revising identities. In Carson’s later work, however, these aspects acquire greater philosophical depth as the author uses the themes of doubles, spies, and makeshift identities to discuss writing itself, the construction of subjectivity, and the dialogic relationship with the other. Taking a cue from Paul Ricoeur’s and Julia Kristeva’s conceptions of “oneself as another,” the article examines how Carson’s spy-figures can be read as metaphors for processes of self-discovery and identity-formation, tied to the notion of “self-othering.” Carson employs the figure of the spy—who juggles identities by “donning” different clothes or languages—to scrutinize how one ventures into the dangerous territory of writing, translation and love, as well as to reconsider notions of originality and self-mastery. Ultimately, Carson conceptualizes literature as specially marked by deceptions and metamorphoses, defining in these terms the human condition.

    This article analyses the theme of map and territory in Catherine Malabou‟s philosophy and in contemporary poetry. Calling into question the traditional understanding of the tension between map and territory, Malabou emphasizes that no map can entirely distance itself from territory, as in the case of the brain‟s development in contact with the environment. Malabou employs cartographic ideas to clarify her own concepts of “plasticity” and “brain-world cartographies” that account for how the environment shapes us, at the same time indicating how we may partake in this process. Viewing selected works by Elizabeth Bishop and Nigel Forde in this perspective, which is demonstrated to dovetail with ecopoetics, this article explores how poetry can offer tools necessary for developing better ecologies of the mind. This is particularly urgent given the ongoing ecological crises as well as ethical challenges entailed by the advent of the Anthropocene and the scaling up of global capitalism.
    Artykuł poświęcony jest figurze mapy i terytorium w filozofii Catherine Malabou i współczesnej poezji. Problematyzując tradycyjne rozumienie napięcia między mapą a terytorium, Malabou podkreśla fakt, że żadna mapa nie może oderwać się od terytorium, co potwierdza jej analiza tego, jak mózg rozwija się w kontakcie ze środowiskiem. Malabou używa koncepcji kartograficznych opracowując pojęcia “plastyczności” oraz “kartografii świata-mózgu,” które pozwalają ująć to, jak kształtowani jesteśmy przez środowisko, wskazując tym samym sposoby, w jakie możemy wpływać na ten proces. Zastosowanie tej perspektywy do analizy wybranych utworów Elizabeth Bishop i Nigela Forde‟a pozwala ukazać zbieżność poetyk tych autorów z podejściem Malabou i programem teoretycznym ekopoetyki, dając zarazem podstawę do wysunięcia tezy, że poezja dostarcza narzędzi koniecznych do tworzenia lepszych, zrównoważonych “ekologii umysłu”. To zadanie wysuwa się na pierwszy plan w kontekście kryzysu ekologicznego i etycznych wyzwań, jakie niosą ze sobą nastanie epoki antropocenu i rozwój zderegulowanego globalnego kapitalizmu.

    This article attempts to investigate the potential resonances between Paul Ricoeur’s and Julia Kristeva’s theories of otherness as applied to the study of poetry by the Northern-Irish poet Sinéad Morrissey. In all of her five poetry books she explores various forms of otherness and attempts to sketch them in verse. She confronts alterity in many ways, approaching such subjects as the relationship with the body and children, encounters with foreigners, and coming to terms with what is foreign within us. This article engages primarily with her experiences of China, which she recorded in the long poem “China” from her third collection, The State of Prisons (2005). Firstly, this article tackles the question of the body, which is interpreted on the basis of Morrissey’s “post-mortem” poems. Their reading prepares the ground for further explorations of otherness, which Morrissey locates at the very heart of human subjectivity. In this way, she also manages to establish a poetic framework for an ethical consideration of otherness. By investigating the working of the human psyche, Morrissey seems to go along the lines of Kristeva and Ricoeur, who claim that otherness is inextricably linked with the formation of human subjectivity. Taking a cue from their philosophical enquiries, the article also attempts to establish where Kristeva’s and Ricoeur’s philosophies overlap.

    Abstract en: This article attempts to place Jeff VanderMeer’s novel Borne (2017) in the context of the New Weird, and more broadly within the tradition of speculative fiction represented by the Weird and the Gothic. The aim of this is also to bring into focus the role of genre fiction in diagnosing the uncanny underside of its times. In the present context, the key issue is to develop new models of subjectivity that would embrace a trans-species, less anthropocentric and more ecological model of caring and “making kin”. This phrase references Donna Haraway’s project, which is argued to dovetail with VanderMeer’s conclusions, defining the article’s ethical premise, formulated around the theme of adolescence in a post-apocalyptic setting.

    Artykuł stawia sobie za cel wykazanie, że we współczesnej literaturze anglojęzycznej wyodrębnić można tradycję, którą cechuje specyficzne przywiązanie do rzeczy, w wielu aspektach zbieżne z dociekaniami prowadzonymi przez przedstawicieli filozofii zwróconej ku przedmiotom (object-oriented philosophy). Pewne aspekty twórczości omawianych poetów – Gerarda Manleya Hopkinsa, Seamusa Heaneya i Jorie Graham – można interpretować jako zwrot ku rzeczom, głównie ze względu na przywiązanie tych autorów do konkretu i szczegółu, co nie powstrzymuje ich jednak przed rozwijaniem swoich zainteresowań w pełnoprawną spekulację metafizyczną. W tym wymiarze, postantropocentryczna filozofia spod znaku realizmu spekulatywnego, a zwłaszcza myśl Grahama Harmana, dostarcza narzędzi konceptualnych pozwalających ująć zagadnienie „istności rzeczy” w perspektywie nowoczesnej, radykalnie zdemokratyzowanej ontologii posthumanistycznej. Krytyka automatyzmów językowych i poznawczych nie jest tu jednak ujęta w kategoriach „śmierci podmiotu”, ale raczej otwiera pole do rozważań nad istotnym miejscem estetyki, a zwłaszcza funkcji metafory
    This paper aims to show that within contemporary English-language poetry it is possible to discern a tradition characterized by a specific attachment to things, which in many ways runs parallel to the investigations of philosophers representing object-oriented philosophy. Certain aspects of poems by authors discussed here – Gerard Manley Hopkins, Seamus Heaney and Jorie Graham – can be interpreted as a turn towards objects, mainly due to the devotion of these poets to particulars and details, which nevertheless does not hinder their further explorations of objects and things, often leading to full-blown metaphysical speculation. In this sense, the post-anthropocentric philosophy of speculative realism, especially the thought of Graham Harman, supplies conceptual tools allowing to grasp the “thingness” from the perspective of a modern, democratic post-human ontology. However, such criticism of automatism in language and cognition is not reduced here to the “death of the subject,” but rather serves as means of further opening the field for consideration, especially regarding the important function of aesthetics and the role of a metaphor.

    In this essay I analyze the phenomenon of boundary and the mode(s) of human experiencing of it. I claim that it is essential, or even foundational, to culture. Humans encounter boundaries positively or negatively virtually everywhere, in all forms of experience of reality and of themselves. To experience a boundary is, obviously, not identical with a simple acceptance of our limitations, but is equally constituted by a pursuit to transgress it. There is no boundary without at least possible transgression, and there is no transgression without a boundary. In this sense one cannot be understood without the other. This paradoxical relation is constitutive – as we know from the great narratives of our culture – for culture and humankind in their essential entanglement. But this picture is to be supplemented by a moment of resistance – even if we were able to transgress all boundaries, does that mean we should? It is this question which draws our attention to creative and normative aspects of our experience of boundaries. It is this question which constitutes a challenge to our thinking and acting whenever we encounter a boundary. In my analyses I pay some special attention to boundaries in contemporary art.
