    The paper presents the BeesyCluster system as a middleware allowing invocation of services on high performance computing resources within the NIWA Centre of Competence project. Access is possible through both WWW and SOAP Web Service interfaces. The former allows non-experienced users to invoke both simple and complex services exposed through easyto-use servlets. The latter is meant for integration of external applications with services made available from clusters or servers. Details of services such as APIs used for development as MPI, OpenMP, OpenCL as well as queuing systems are hidden from the user. The paper describes both the WWW and Web Service interfaces extended for use with files of large sizes. Mechanisms for selection of devices for execution of services are described along with experiments including remote invocations.

    Non-linear properties of cardiomyocyte membranes are poorly understood. We model a cell membrane using the Beeler-Reuter model with the Drouhard-Roberge modification (the BRDR model). Simulations are performed using AC voltage test excitation of 1 or 100kHz frequency and 1 or 10mV RMS. Values of currents flowing through the cell membrane are considered to be the response. The BRDR response is presented at the fundamental frequency and at its second and third harmonics. The response is mainly contributed to by the time-independent potassium current (iK1) during resting membrane potential. The level of currents varies strongly during the period of action potential. However, the linear response from the membrane capacitance is relatively high. The second and third harmonics of the 1kHz/10mV probing voltage carry some information about the action potential. In particular, it may be used to investigate the process of repolarization and its disorders.

    In the age of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Web and the Internet have changed significantly the way applications are developed, deployed and used. One of recent trends is modern design of web-applications based on SOA. This process is based on the composition of existing web services into a single scenario from the point of view of a particular user or client. This allows IT companies to shorten the producttime to market process. On the other hand, it raises questions about the quality of the application, trade-offs between quality factors and attributes and measurements of these. Services are usually hosted and executed in an environment managed by its provider that assures the quality attributes such as availability or throughput. Therefore, in this paper an attempt has been made to perform quality measurements towards the creation of efficient, dependable and user-oriented Web applications. First, the process of designing service-based applications is described. Next, metrics for subsequent measurements of efficiency, dependability and usability of distributed applications are presented. These metrics will assess the efforts and trade-offs in a Web-based application development. As examples, we describe a pair of multimedia applications which we have developed in our department and executed in a cluster-based environment. One of them runs in the BeesyCluster middleware and the second one in the Kaskada platform. For these applications we present results of measurements and conclude about relations between quality attributes in the presented application development model. This knowledge can be used to reason about such relations for new similar applications and be used in rapid and quality development of the latter.
