Opis:
Introduction and objective. Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) via personal insulin pump is a valuable therapeutic tool in T1DM patients. However, adherence to recommended CSII- related behaviours may be of concern to young adults with intensive, variable daily activities (students, young professionals). The aim of this observational study was to estimate treatment outcomes in young adult patients with T1DM, and compare them with older individuals. Materials and methods. Overall, 140 adults with T1DM on CSII were examined, divided into 2 subgroups: 77 patients younger than 26 years of age (mean 20.6 years) and 63 older subjects (mean 39.0). We compared the glycaemic control in both groups of T1DM subjects and analyzed treatment attitudes to identify potentially modifiable behaviours influencing the efficacy of the treatment. Results. The younger individuals were characterized by significantly worse treatment outcomes, compared to the older ones: the mean HbA1c levels were 7.6 ± 1.3% and 6.9±1.3% (p=0.00001), while the mean glucose levels based on glucometer downloads were 161±33.6 mg/dL and 136±21.8 mg/dL (p=0.00001), respectively. The frequency of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) was lower in younger individuals (5.3±2.1 vs. 7.0±2.8 daily, p=0.0005, respectively); they were also less frequently used advanced pump functions, e.g. the bolus calculator (48% vs. 67% users, p=0.0014, respectively). Conclusions. The efficacy of CSII treatment observed in young T1DM adults was worse than in older patients. The reason for this phenomenon remains unclear, it may be due simply to age-dependend behaviours, to social environment, or both.

Opis:
The paper addresses the issue of searching for similar images and objects in arepository of information. The contained images are annotated with the help of the sparse descriptors. In the presented research, different color and edge histogram descriptors were used. To measure similarities among images, various color descriptors are compared. For this purpose different distance measures were employed. In order to decrease execution time, several code optimization and parallelization methods are proposed. Results of these experiments, as well as discussion of the advantages and limitations of different combinations of metods are presented.

Opis:
Glioma detection and classification is an critical step to diagnose and select the correct treatment for the brain tumours. There has been advances in glioma research and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the most accurate non-invasive medical tool to localize and analyse brain cancer. The scientific global community has been organizing challenges of open data analysis to push forward automatic algorithms to tackle this task. In this paper we analyse part of such challenge data, the Multimodal Brain Tumor Image Segmentation Benchmark (BRATS), with novel algorithms using partial learning to test an active learning methodology and tensor-based image modelling methods to deal with the fusion of the multimodal MRI data into one space. A Random Forest classifier is used for pixel classification. Our results show an error rates of 0.011 up to 0.057 for intra-subject classification. These results are promising compared to other studies. We plan to extend this method to use more than 3 MRI modalities and present a full active learning approach.

Opis:
Most recently it has been found that nanodiamond particles have very interesting properties. There are number of research communications that detonation nanodiamond particles (NDPs) are fairly reactive and their surface can be effectively modified by chemical methods. The hydroxyl-modified NDPs were obtained by Fenton reaction, amine-functionalized NDPs were obtained by chemical reduction of the nitro- -functionalized surface and carboxyl-modified NDPs by oxidation by using H2O2 under acidic conditions. NDPs functionalized by hydroxyl- and amine- groups and amino groups were used for covalent binding of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals (aspirin, ketoprofen, ibuprofen, naproxen) via ester or amide bonds. These results of the studies proved the activity of the conjugates of active substance-NDP and study the rate of release of active substance from the NDPs surface by in vitro examinations with mouse fibroblasts. The progress of the reaction and the characteristics of the products were determined by using FT-IR. Chemical and physical structures of materials were also investigated by Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS). DRIFT spectra show the modification of nanodiamond by ketoprofen, naproxen, ibuprofen and aspirin.
