Opis:
This study shows that magnetic edge states of graphene-like nanoribbons enhance effectively the thermoelectric performance. This is due to the antiparallel alignment of magnetic moments on opposite zigzag edges and the confinement effect, which jointly lead to the appearance of a gap in the electronic energy spectrum. Consequently, the Seebeck coefficient as well as the thermoelectric power factor get strongly enhanced (with respect to other alignment cases) at room temperature and energies not far away from the charge neutrality point. Moreover the corresponding figure of merit (ZT) is also improved as a result of the reduced electronic thermal conductance.

Opis:
Spin-polarized transport through a quantum dot side attached to a topological superconductor and coupled to a pair of normal leads is discussed in Coulomb and Kondo regimes. For discussion of Coulomb range equation of motion method with extended Hubbard I approximation is used and Kondo regime is analyzed by Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave boson approach. Apart from the occurrence of zero bias anomaly the presence of Majorana states reflects also in splitting of Coulomb lines. In the region of Coulomb borders the spin dependent negative differential conductance is observed. Due to the low energy scale of Kondo effect this probe allows for detection of Majorana states even for extremely weak coupling with topological wire. In this range no signatures of Majorana states appear in Coulomb blockade dominated transport.

Opis:
This paper is devoted to identification of the most important factors responsible for formation of magnetic moments at edges of graphene-like nanoribbons. The main role is attributed to the Hubbard correlations (within unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation) and intrinsic spin-orbit interactions, but additionally a perpendicular electric field is also taken into account. Of particular interest is the interplay of the in-plane edge magnetism and the energy band gap. It is shown that, with the increasing electric field, typically the following phases develop: magnetic insulator (with in-plane spins), nonmagnetic narrow-band semiconductor, and nonmagnetic band insulator.

Opis:
Strong spin-selective effects have been recently observed in both photoemission and electrical transport experiments in biomolecular systems, opening fascinating possibilities for interfacing semiconductor and biomolecular systems to create highly efficient spintronics devices. From the theoretical and experimental point of view there are strong suggestions that molecular chirality is playing a crucial role. In this study we extend a previously formulated model (R. Gutierrez, E. Díaz, R. Naaman, G. Cuniberti, Phys. Rev. B 85, 081404 (2012)) describing the linear propagation of a charge with spin along the axis of a helical charge distribution. We explore different parameter regions and show that a strong negative spin polarization as observed in the previously mentioned experiments can be obtained with reasonable values of both the electronic coupling elements and the helical field induced spin-orbit interaction.
