Opis:
The proportion of urea in the modified combustion method to prepare lithium metasilicate (Li₂SiO₃) powders was investigated. Reactions were performed using LiOH:H₂SiO₃:CH₄N₂O in molar ratios of 1:1:1, 1:1:2, 1:1:3, 1:1:4 and 1:1:5 which were heated at 450°C during 5 min. It was found, by X-ray diffraction, that LiOH:H₂SiO₃:CH₄N₂O in the ratio of 1:1:3 was the more adequate molar ratio to produce mainly Li₂SiO₃. It was observed that excess of urea produced mainly silicium dioxide (SiO₂) in coesite phase instead Li₂SiO₃. Thermogravimetric analyses showed that decomposition products of urea, such as biuret, cyanic acid and cyanuric acid, were found in samples prepared with high proportions of urea (1:1:4 and 1:1:5). Carbonates identified by IR spectroscopy were found in samples prepared with LiOH:H₂SiO₃:CH₄N₂O in 1:1:1, 1:1:2, 1:1:3, 1:1:14 and 1:1:5 molar ratios.

Opis:
Electromagnetic fields have many applications in agriculture, but much still remains to be studied to provide scientific evidence of its potential use as an alternative for improvement of food quality from plants whose seed was irradiated, especially in the physical characteristics of the product. In this study we investigated the effects of the electromagnetic fields on the physical quality of maize grain. Twelve treatments were evaluated from a combination of two maize hybrids (San Juan and San Jose) and five times of exposure to electromagnetic field (3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 minutes) plus a control (no electromagnetic treatment) in a design of randomised complete blocks with four replications. Electromagnetic treatment of the hybrid maize seeds (San Juan and San Jose), applied as a presowing treatment, modifies the physical characteristics of maize grains. It was possible to observe that there were significant differences (p≤0.01) between the experimental treatments and between the hybrids in their grain length (LG), grain width (GW) and 1000-grain weight (TGW). The hectolitric weight (HW) of the hybrids was between 69.05 and 68.98 kg hL-1, respectively. These results could have an impact on the process and quality of the tortilla that is consumed by the population; this is a function of time of exposure to electromagnetic treatment.
Badania obejmowały dwanaście kombinacji – dwie hybrydy kukurydzy (San Juan and San Jose) i pięć czasów działania polem elektromagnetycznym (3, 6, 9, 12 i 15 minut) plus kombinacja kontrolna (nasiona bez traktowania polem elektromagnetycznym). Doświadczenie założono metodą bloków losowych w czterech powtórzeniach. Przedsiewne działanie polem elektromagnetycznym na nasiona hybryd kukurydzy (San Juan and San Jose) modyfikuje cechy fizyczne otrzymanego ziarna.

Opis:
The fruit processing industry generates huge amounts of waste annually, causing severe environmental problems. Mango processing produces around 20 million tons of wastes from the non-consumed fraction, mainly peels and seeds, which constitute 30–60% of the fruit weight. However, various phytochemicals found in these residues have been implicated in preventing cancer and also cardio-metabolic and gastrointestinal diseases. Particularly, phenolic compounds hold a promising potential to be utilized as modulatory agents of the human gut microbiota (prebiotics-like actions). This review article mainly discusses the effect of phenolics from mango wastes on gut microbiota modulation and its beneficial repercussions for human health. Moreover, it also discusses the importance of phenolic compounds of mango peel and seed kernel residues, their extraction, identification, and quantification.

Opis:
Mode choice analysis of school trips becomes important due to the fact that these trips contribute to the second largest share of peak hour traffic. This scenario is more relevant in India, which has almost 265 million students enrolled in different accredited urban and rural schools of India, from Class I to XII as per the UDISE report of 2019-20. Thus, it becomes necessary to understand what mode of transport will be mostly used for school trips in order to design an efficient transportation system. Modal attributes and socio-economic characteristics are mostly considered as explanatory variables in travel mode choice models. Multinomial Logit (MNL) model is one of the classic models used in the development of mode choice models. These logistic regression models predict outcomes based on a set of independent variables. With the recent advances in machine learning, transportation problems are getting a wide arena of methods and solutions. Among them the method of ensemble learning is finding a prominent place in contemporary modelling. This study explores the potential of using ensembles of random decision trees in mode choice analysis by Random Forest Technique with a comparative analysis on conventional method. It was observed that Random Forest method outperforms MNL method in predicting the mode choice preference of students. The high accuracy of machine learning models is mainly due to its ability to consider complex nonlinear relationship between socio-economic attributes and travel mode choice. These models can learn and identify pattern characteristics extracted from sample data and form adaptive structures through computational process thereby offering insights into the relationships between variables that random utility models cannot recognize. This study considered activity -travel information, personal data and household characteristics of students as attributes for model development and observed that the age of the student and distance of school from home plays a significant role in deciding the mode choice of school trips.

Opis:
Recent advances in medical imaging technology using multiple detector-row computed tomography (CT) provide volumetric datasets with unprecedented spatial resolution. This has allowed for CT to evolve into an excellent non-invasive vascular imaging technology, commonly referred to as CT-angiography. Visualisation of vascular structures from CT datasets is demanding, however, and identification of anatomic objects in CT-datasets is highly desirable. Density and/or gradient operators have been used most commonly to classify CT data. In CT angiography, simple density/gradient operators do not allow precise and reliable classification of tissues due to the fact that different tissues (e.g. bones and vessels) possess the same density range and may lie in close spatial vicinity. We think, that anatomic classification can be achieved more accurately, if both spatial location and density properties of volume data are taken into account. We present a combination of two well-known methods for volume data processing to obtain accurate tissue classification. 3D watershed transform is used to partition the volume data in morphologically consistent blocks and a probabilistic anatomic atlas is used to distinguish between different kinds of tissues based on their density.

Opis:
Travel Demand Management (TDM) can be considered as the most viable option to manage the increasing traffic demand by controlling excessive usage of personalized vehicles. TDM provides expanded options to manage existing travel demand by redistributing the demand rather than increasing the supply. To analyze the impact of TDM measures, the existing travel demand of the area should be identified. In order to get quantitative information on the travel demand and the performance of different alternatives or choices of the available transportation system, travel demand model has to be developed. This concept is more useful in developing countries like India, which have limited resources and increasing demands. Transport related issues such as congestion, low service levels and lack of efficient public transportation compels commuters to shift their travel modes to private transport, resulting in unbalanced modal splits. The present study explores the potential to implement travel demand management measures at Kazhakoottam, an IT business hub cum residential area of Thiruvananthapuram city, a medium sized city in India. Travel demand growth at Kazhakoottam is a matter of concern because the traffic is highly concentrated in this area and facility expansion costs are pretty high. A sequential four-stage travel demand model was developed based on a total of 1416 individual household questionnaire responses using the macro simulation software CUBE. Trip generation models were developed using linear regression and mode split was modelled as multinomial logit model in SPSS. The base year traffic flows were estimated and validated with field data. The developed model was then used for improving the road network conditions by suggesting short-term TDM measures. Three TDM scenarios viz; integrating public transit system with feeder mode, carpooling and reducing the distance of bus stops from zone centroids were analysed. The results indicated an increase in public transit ridership and considerable modal shift from private to public/shared transit.

Opis:
It is a common practice to mount a catalytic converter directly at the outlet of the exhaust manifold in order to reduce the cold start emissions from the automotive engines by improving the light-off time. The so called Close-Coupled Converter, because of its nearness to the engine, is more exposed to non-uniform fluid flows comingfrom the individual manifold runners, what frequently yields a stream of gases flowing mainly through a section of the monolith causing the aging of the catalyst and low conversion efficiency, among other negative effects. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has became a very useful and widely used tool to analyze and optimize this kind of exhaust after-treatment systems in a relatively fast and accurate way for design purposes. There are several designs of exhaust manifolds whose shape and dimensions are mainly restricted not only by the engine characteristics but by the space constraints of the particular vehicles they are designedfor. In this work the commercial CFD code ANSYS FLUENT was used to evaluate and compare the effect of three shapes of exhaust manifolds on the fluid flow uniformity at the entrance of the Close-Coupled Converter. Pressure drop in the entire Manifold-Converter device is also an important parameter considered for the design evaluation. The manifolds investigated are of type cast, 4-2-1 and L-shaped, which are commonly used in the automotive industry.

Opis:
Congenital heart defects are among the most common congenital defects and contribute substantially to the mortality of newborns and young infants, in spite of well-developed medical and surgical treatments. It is estimated that the mortality of children with congenital heart defects in developing countries is as high as 20%, whereas the incidence of congenital heart defects is approximately 1/100 live births(1). Currently, there is an emphasis on early fetal screening for chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects, despite the fact that congenital heart defects are four times more frequent than chromosomal abnormalities and six times more frequent than neural tube defects(2). It should be noted that basic in-utero screening for heart defects is possible as early as the first trimester, which in some cases prompts further work-up and treatment(3). Throughout the world, second trimester screening remains the mainstay of prenatal diagnosis of cardiac anomalies. However, a comprehensive work-up for fetal heart defects can be associated with substantial psychological burden on the mother and her family. Moreover, the prevalence of misdiagnosis can be as high as 36%, thus prompting the need for further training and multidisciplinary team work(4). Furthermore, 33% of heart defects are accompanied by other anomalies(5).
Wrodzone wady serca należą do najczęstszych wad wrodzonych i mimo rozwiniętego leczenia zachowawczego, jak i operacyjnego w dalszym ciągu stanowią jedną z najczęstszych przyczyn zgonów w okresie noworodkowym i wczesnoniemowlęcym.
