Opis:
This paper considers the feasibility of different technologies for an electromagnetic launcher to assist civil aircraft take-off. This method is investigated to reduce the power required from the engines during initial acceleration. Assisted launch has the potential of reducing the required runway length, reducing noise near airports and improving overall aircraft efficiency through reducing engine thrust requirements. The research compares two possible linear motor topologies which may be efficaciously used for this application. The comparison is made on results from both analytical and finite element analysis (FEA).

Opis:
Absorption spectra have been measured for a 10 nm CdTe(0.3%Mn) quantum well with electron concentration n$\text{}_{e}$ variable up to 1.5×10$\text{}^{11}$cm$\text{}^{-2}$. Following recent theory appropriate to low n$\text{}_{e}$, here ≈0.1/π a$\text{}_{B}^{2}$, the spectra are interpreted in a "strong exciton" model, where the initial oscillator strength of the excitonic resonance (X) is conserved, with screening and phase-space filling effects negligible. As n$\text{}_{e}$ increases in zero-field and as the filling factorν increases in magnetic field, the intensity of X is transferred to: (i) trion processes, namely exciton-one electron scattering and the trion resonance (T), and (ii) quatron processes, namely exciton-two electron scattering and trion-one electron scattering. In magnetic field, the three- and four-body scattering processes become discrete, combined "exciton and cyclotron" and combined "trion and cyclotron" excitations that take all the intensity of X and T for ν≾1 and ν>2, respectively.

Opis:
Optical spectra associated with transitions that create or annihilate charged excitons X$\text{}^{-}$ or X$\text{}^{+}$ can be observed in quantum well heterostructures containing an electron gas or a hole gas, respectively. A review is given of properties of trion states in CdTe quantum wells in zero field and of the magnetic field-dependence of the circular polarization and oscillator strength of the trion optical resonance. The possibility that disorder is needed to stabilise trion states in concentrated 2D electron or hole systems is discussed.

The phenomenon in which giant enhancement of exciton magnetic moments occurs due to translational motion was found for light hole excitons in ZnTe/ZnMgTe quantum well structures. Decreasing diamagnetic shifts as the number of the exciton quantized state increases were found for the first time.

Opis:
Although present since the mid 19th century, the introduced snail species Cepaea nemoralis has spread extensively in Göteborg, mainly in the last two decades. Early samples show the predominance of yellow-shelled morphs, but in modern populations pink shells predominate. There is great variation in morph frequencies among modern populations with high values of F ST , and with no relationships to habitat. The patterns shown resemble those seen in Sheffield (UK), a city also colonised over a similar time period, but differ from those seen in regions where the species has been established for much longer. The combination of early and recent records suggests not only that founder effects play a large part in determining morph frequencies, but that present populations derive from multiple colonisations from different sources.
