Opis:
More than forty specimens from the middle Cambrian Burgess Shale reveal the detailed anatomy of Isoxys, a worldwide distributed bivalved arthropod represented here by two species, namely Isoxys acutangulus and Isoxys longissimus. I. acutangulus had a non−mineralized headshield with lateral pleural folds (= “valves” of previous authors) that covered the animal’s body almost entirely, large frontal spherical eyes and a pair of uniramous prehensile appendages bearing stout spiny outgrowths along their anterior margins. The 13 following appendages had a uniform biramous design—i.e., a short endopod and a paddle−like exopod fringed with marginal setae with a probable natatory function. The trunk ended with a flap−like telson that protruded beyond the posterior margin of the headshield. The gut of I. acutangulus was tube−like, running from mouth to telson, and was flanked with numerous 3D−preserved bulbous, paired features interpreted as digestive glands. The appendage design of I. acutangulus indicates that the animal was a swimmer and a visual predator living off−bottom. The general anatomy of Isoxys longissimus was similar to that of I. acutangulus although less information is available on the exact shape of its appendages and visual organs. I. longissimus is characterized by extremely long anterior and posterior spines. There are now seven Isoxys species known with soft−part preservation, I. acutangulus, I. longissimus from the Burgess Shale, I. auritus and I. curvirostratus from the Maotianshan Shale of China, I. communis and I. glaessneri from the Emu Bay Shale of Australia and I. volucris from Sirius Passet in Greenland. The frontal appendages of Isoxys strongly resemble those of other Cambrian arthropods, characterized by a single pair of “great appendages” with a shared prehensile function yet some variability in length and shape.

Opis:
Recent work in our laboratory has established a time-temperature superposition law for a PBX. This was achieved by performing uniaxial compression testing over a wide range of strain rates and temperatures along with Differential Thermal Mechanical Analysis (DMTA). The classic WLF (Williams, Landel, Ferry) transform was found not to fit the shift factor needed to align the data whereas a simple log-linear fit did. The thermal properties (diffusivity, conductivity, heat capacity) of a PBX have been measured three different ways and found to agree (within experimental error) with the classic equation relating these three parameters. This gives us confidence that, for example, hot-spot ignition mechanisms of this class of energetic materials can be accurately modelled using their measured thermal properties. A modular instrumented testing facility has been designed and built to simulate and control the conditions experienced by novel heavy-metal-free (green) primers contained within ammunition. Physical data obtained from the facility, when compared with data from live fire tests, will give a greater understanding of which characteristics are important to functionality. As explosives are granular materials, the techniques developed for studying such materials are being applied to determine the effect of particle size distribution and shape on sensitivity.

Opis:
New theoretical and traditional quantitative solutions involving a pervasive unit quantum of ~10-20 J within biological and large-scale physical systems predicted that the mass of the human subject, subtle changes in gravitational phenomena, and the energy available within the cerebral volume should affect proximal random number variations produced by electron tunneling. In a series of experiments application of a specific, physiologically-patterned weak magnetic field over the right temporal lobe significantly enhanced the effects of intention upon deviations from random variations created by electron tunneling devices at a distance of 1 m. These variations were strongly (r ~0.80) correlated with the coupling between the forces from the background free oscillations of the earth and the energy differences across the cell width between lunar perigee and apogee. The results support the approach that complex cognitive processes including “intention” can be described by physicochemical parameters and their magnitude of energies are within the range by which interactions or modulations from subtle gravitational forces applied across the cellular membrane and width might occur.
