    Bogusław Zmudzinski’s book Twórczość filmowa Jana Švankmajera. Główne konteksty kulturowe i ideowe [Film Works of Jan Švankmajer: Main Cultural and Ideological Contexts] (2020) is an attempt to answer the question about the contexts essential in analyzing the short film work of the Prague Alchemist. The author argues Švankmajer’s works is a polemical continuator of the oeuvre of the mannerist painter Giuseppe Arcimboldi. In his essays, Zmudzinski analyzes selected aspects of Švankmajer’s work by locating them in the context of Arcimboldi’s painting. Although the reviewer criticizes the disorderly line of argumentation, she acknowledges Zmudzinski’s research proposals as broadening the field of consideration of Polish and Czech film animation. Particularly noteworthy are the issues of festival reception of Švankmajer’s works and the postulate to take into account the local contexts of filmmaking in the process of the final interpretation of the work.

    The author looks at the Polish-Czechoslovak co-production What Will My Wife Say to This? (Co řekne žena?, dir. Jaroslav Mach, 1958) through the lens of production and culture. This article presents methodology that enables the study of co-production in the socialist countries. Further the author presents the main determinants of Polish-Czechoslovak cooperation in the years of 1948-1958. The analysis of the making of the film What Will My Wife Say to This?, the first post-war Czechoslovak-Polish co-production, shows the making of a film as a field of clashing of conflicting aspirations and interests.

    How to determine the functions of the futur antérieur tense? The aim of this article is the analysis of the context in order to distinguish the elements which influence the interpretation of the futur antérieur tense. Research takes into account: temporal and modality adverbs, the adverbs jamais and rarement, comparative constructions, verbs of opinion, type of sentence (interrogative, exclamatory, negative), type of subordinate clause (temporal, relative), subject of the sentence, aspect of the verb, position of the sentence with the futur antérieur tense in the text and type of the text. This analysis allows the construction of rules by which we can automatically identify the meanings of the futur antérieur tense.

    One of the key roles in the cinematic image of Łódź (the centre of Polish film production in the 1950s and 1960s) was played by “Se-Ma-For” Film Studio. The political and economic changes that Poland underwent at the beginning of the 1990s resulted in the liquidation of most state-owned companies. Se-Ma-For studio managed to operate until 1999, when it was closed. Th is text elaborates on the circumstances that resulted in the liquidation of the studio in 1999.

    The paper presents an interview with Krzysztof Zanussi (born 17 June 1939), one of the most renowned award-winning Polish film directors. Some of his numerous films for television and cinema have been made in co-operation with German producers, including Manfred Durniok. His film Roads in the Night (Wege in der Nacht, 1979) was presented in 1980 in Cannes as part of the section “Un certain regard”. In Germany, Zanussi filmed not only some of his own screenplays, such as Imperative (Imperativ, 1982 – Special Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival in 1982), but also adaptations of Polish and German literature, for example House of Women (Haus der Frauen, 1977) based on a play by Zofia Nałkowska and Bluebeard (Blaubart, 1983) based on a novel by Max Frisch. In addition to those productions, he concurrently made films in Poland. Director of the TOR Film Studio since 1979. He produced films by such directors as Krzysztof Kieślowski and Agnieszka Holland. He currently works on a feature film entitled Ether.

    Artykuł ma na celu przybliżenie kontekstów zagranicznej twórczości Krzysztofa Zanussiego oraz polskiej recepcji prasowej jego filmów z tamtego okresu. Efekty współpracy Zanussiego z niemieckimi producentami (firmami produkcyjnymi i stacjami telewizyjnymi) w większości były niedostępne dla polskich widzów i pomijane w polskim piśmiennictwie filmowym, co doprowadziło do wykształcenia się niepełnej – czy wręcz przekłamanej – sylwetki twórczej reżysera. Skutkowało to istotnym przesunięciem recepcji sylwetki samego Zanussiego i osłabieniem jego pozycji w polu polskiej kinematografii.
    The article aims to bring the context of foreign creativity of Krzysztof Zanussi and the Polish press reception of his films from that period. The effects of Zanussi’s cooperation with German producers (production companies and television stations) were mostly unavailable to Polish viewers and omitted in Polish film literature, which led to the development of an incomplete - or even distorted - creative figure of the director. This resulted in a significant shift in the reception of Zanussi’s work and weakening his po- sition in the field of Polish cinematography.

    Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS) are a group of rarely observed disorders, accompanying about 1% of cancer diseases. They have a typically aggressive course, leading to profound and essentially irreversible disability. The pathogenic cause behind PNS is damage of the nervous system structures as a consequence of the body’s immunological reaction induced by cancer. Onconeural antibodies generated as part of the reaction target the tumour tissues, but also the regular nervous tissue recognized as antigens. Presence of onconeural antibodies reveals a 50–60% sensitivity and 100% specificity in diagnosing PNS. Imaging and laboratory tests have a limited impact on diagnosis. What is crucial is the analysis of clinical systems following Graus’s criteria (elaborated in 2004). In the case presented here, the patient underwent treatment in many neurological departments due to the symptoms of progressive damage of the nervous system. She was eventually diagnosed with the stiff person syndrome related to breast cancer. In spite of the treatment, including an efficacious oncological therapy, the severe neurological deficit resulted in serious motor disability.

    Six hybrid N-ureidoethylamides of octapeptides in which an N-terminal cyclic structure related to enkephalin was elongated by a C-terminal fragment of deltorphin were synthesized on MBHA resin. The synthetic procedure involved deprotection of Boc groups with HCl/dioxane and cleavage of the peptide resin with 45 % TFA in DCM. d-Lys and d-Orn were incorporated in position 2, and Lys, Orn, Dab, or Dap in position 5. The side chains of the dibasic amino function were protected with the Fmoc group. This protection was removed by treatment with 55 % piperidine in DMF, and cyclization was achieved by treatment with bis-(4-nitrophenyl)carbonate. Using various combinations of dibasic amino acids, peptides containing a 17-, 18-, 19- or 20-membered ring structure were obtained. The peptides were tested in the guinea-pig ileum (GPI) and mouse vas deferens (MVD) assays. Diverse opioid activities were observed, depending on the size of the ring. Extension of the enkephalin sequence at the C-terminus by a deltorphin fragment resulted in a change of receptor selectivity in favor of the δ receptor. The conformational propensities of selected peptides were determined using the EDMC method in conjunction with data derived from NMR experiments carried out in water. This approach allowed proper examination of the dynamical behavior of these small peptides. The results were compared with those obtained earlier with corresponding N-(ureidoethyl)pentapeptide amides.
