Opis:
In this study, fatigue life predictions for the various metal matrix composites, R ratios, notch geometries, and different temperatures have been performed by using artificial neural networks (ANN) approach. Input parameters of the model comprise various materials (M), such as particle size and volume fraction of reinforcement, stress concentration factor (Kt), R ratio (R), peak stress (S), temperatures (T), whereas, output of the ANN model consist of number of failure cycles. ANN controller was trained with Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) learning algorithm. The tested actual data and predicted data were simulated by a computer program developed on MATLAB platform. It is shown that the model provides intimate fatigue life estimations compared with actual tested data.
Zastosowano sztuczne sieci neuronowe (ANN) do przewidywania trwałości zmęczeniowej dla różnych kompozytów metalowych, parametrów R, geometrii karbu, i różnych temperatur. Parametry wejściowe modelu obejmowały: różne materiały (M), o różnym rozmiarze cząstek i objętosci frakcji zbrojącej, współczynnik koncentracji naprężeń (Kt), stosunek parametru R (R), naprężenie szczytowe (S), temperaturę (T), natomiast dane wyjściowe składały się z liczby cykli awarii (SSN). Kontroler ANN był trenowany z użyciem algorytmu uczenia Levenberga-Marquardta (LM). Badane dane rzeczywiste i dane przewidywane symulowane były przez program komputerowy opracowany na platformie MATLAB. Wykazano, że model zapewnia oszacowanie trwałości zmęczeniowej bliską rzeczywistym danym badanym.

Opis:
The objectives of this study have been to determine the impact of the distance from acombustor of a cement plant (downwind direction) and duration of exposure to pollution on the bioaccumulation of metals by four lichen species. Nickel, cadmium, chromium, cop- per and lead accumulated in lichen thalli, with the highest accumulation occurring at 50 m of the cement plant and upon prolonged exposure. In contrast, the concentrations of Al were not consistently affected by the distance from the plant or the duration of exposure. Pseudevernia furfuracea was most effective as an indicator of cement dust pollution. We concluded that transplantation of Pseudevernia furfuracea on trees or shrubs can be an easy and cost-effective means of Ni, Cd, Cr, Cu and Pb pollution monitoring.

Opis:
Through the aim of this study, the effects of combined buoyancy-driven flows and thermo capillary flows, which are emerged from temperature differences, on fluid flow and heat transfer numerically investigated with differentially heated side walls in a free surface square cavity. The study has been accomplished with three milestones to achieve the right solutions. For every milestone Navier-Stokes, continuity and energy equations are discretized by using finite volume method and grids with 52 x 52 control volumes. Results are presented Pr=1, Pr=7 and Pr=100. The effect of positive and negative Marangoni number on fluid flow and heat transfer at different Rayleigh number are considered and discussed.

Opis:
Articular cartilage is a highly organized avascular tissue, a matrix consisting of a three-dimensional meshwork of type II collagen fibrils and proteoglycans. To understand the effects of the alteration in chondrocyte shape in response to physiological load in local mechanical properties and, thus, to contribute to experimental load studies, we studied variation of the natural load induced deformations in chondrocytes among five different regions from bovine articular cartilage samples using confocal laser scanning microscopy imaging methods. The morphological differences of the chondrocyte shape, orientation and circularity in articular cartilage were measured. The chondrocytes were observed to be smoother in more loaded regions to the center of the cartilage.

Opis:
In present study, Ho₂O₃ and Dy₂O₃ doped Bi₂O₃ composite materials for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) were investigated. $(Bi_2 O_3)_{1-x-y}(Ho_2 O_3)_x(Dy_2 O_3)_y$ ternary systems (x=0.11, 0.13, 0.15 and y=0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07) were fabricated using conventional solid-state synthesis techniques. The samples were characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimeter, and the four-point probe technique. X-ray powder diffraction measurements indicated that all samples have the stable fluorite type face centered cubic (fcc) δ-Bi₂O₃ phase. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs of all of the samples showed that grain size distribution was uniform. Four-point probe technique measurements showed that the conductivity of the samples increase with increase of temperature. Additionally, it has been found that the maximum conductivity values of all samples fall in a range $8.44×10^{-2}-4.60×10^{-1} Scm^{-1}$ and their conductivity values corresponding to the intermediate-temperature region vary in the range $1.65×10^{-3}-2.30×10^{-1} Scm^{-1}$. The activation energy values of the samples were calculated from łogσ graphics versus 1000/T using the Arrhenius equation. It was found that there is a good agreement between the activation energy values and conductivity values.

Opis:
In order to investigate the influence of the number of layers on the properties of ZrO₂ thin films, we prepared one pure ZrO₂ film sample with five layers and Ce, Eu, and Dy-doped ZrO₂ samples with single layer, by spin-coating sol gel-method. The crystal structures of thin films were determined using X-ray diffraction, morphology of the samples was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, and the optical properties of the samples were determined by ultraviolet/visible absorbance measurements. The results of these measurements have shown that the concentration of the dopants and the thickness of thin film layers play a vital role in the physical, chemical, and optical properties of the pure and doped ZrO₂ thin films.

Opis:
In this study, the adsorption of non-radioactive cobalt ions from aqueous solutions onto Isparta pumice and zeolite 4A sorbents was investigated. Both adsorbent materials have been activated at 873 K for 2 h prior to adsorption experiments in batch mode. The maximum removal efficiencies of 90% and 99% have been obtained experimentally using Isparta pumice and zeolite 4A, respectively. In addition, the experiments with radioactive 60Co were performed to test zeolite ability to remove radioactive compounds. Likewise, the response surface methodology (RSM) has been applied to develop the predictive regression models to describe the adsorption of cobalt and radiocobalt ions onto zeolite 4A and Isparta pumice. The results indicated that zeolite 4A as well as Isparta pumice could be used as the efficient sorption materials for cobalt and radiocobalt ions removal.

Opis:
In this study, using spin-coating sol-gel method we fabricated TiO₂ thin films, doped with different concentrations (1, 2, and 3 mole %) of Ce, Dy, and Eu. Characterization of the prepared samples was performed by means of the X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet visible absorption, and differential thermal and thermo gravimetric analysis. X-ray diffraction measurements have shown that in Eu and Dy-doped samples crystal structure consists of mixed rutile and the dominant anatase phases, however the Ce doped samples consist of anatase phase only. Scanning electron microscopy images have revealed that while average thin film thickness of the Dy-doped samples decreases with increasing concentration of Dy, the average film thicknesses of samples doped with Ce and Eu increases with increasing concentrations of these dopants. Ultraviolet visible absorption spectroscopy measurements have shown that while absorbances of the samples doped by 1 and 2 mole % of the dopants have nearly similar properties, these properties differ from each other for 3 mole % of the dopants. Finally, differential thermal and thermo gravimetric analyses have shown that the chemical reactions and weight losses of the samples have occurred at the expected temperatures.

GaInP nanofibers were formed on n-Si substrates by electrospinning method, using constant voltage (25 kV), height (6 cm), and flow rate (0.3 ml/h) during various process times (of 10, 20, 25 minutes). Characterization of the prepared samples was performed by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry/thermal gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Furthermore, the current-voltage measurements of the GaInP/n-Si samples have been carried out. The obtained results show that I-V characteristics of all GaInP/n-Si samples fabricated with three thicknesses of GaInP layers are rather in a good agreement with the theory and that they exhibit rectifying properties.
