Opis:: The article presents the historical overview of the Polish ski jumping hills. The analysis particularly concerned the role of the objects from the Beskid Mountains area of Bielsko-Biała and Cieszyn, including the hills in Bystra and Szczyrk-Skalite, which now significantly represent the importance of the Beskid Mountains as a ski jumping centre in Poland. The paper presents the quality of ski jumping facilities in Bystra, too. It reminds a long way that was passed by local activists to rebuild the skiing tradition in the village, and also shows the every-day sport reality. There is still a dilemma between trying to have another, third hill and cooperating with the neighbours. The last part of the article contains an analysis of the dynamic properties of the ski jumping hills in Bystra and Szczyrk. This information may be useful for trainers of young sportsmen.

Opis:: Background: Biocompatible fluids were introduced to improve dialysis and patient outcome in end-stage renal disease. However, being buffered with lactate, they may insufficiently correct metabolic acidosis, and lead to changes in peritoneum structure. Bicarbonate buffered fluids might mitigate these complications. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of a bicarbonate dialysis fluid on clinical and laboratory indices of dialysis adequacy. Material and methods: 20 prevalent peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients created two groups. One group continued on lactate fluid, the other changed to bicarbonate solution. Clinical and laboratory indices of dialysis adequacy were evaluated at baseline, and at six weeks intervals for 24 weeks. Results: In bicarbonate group, pH was 7.36±0.03, HCO3 22.1±1.8 mmol/l at baseline and 7.36±0.04 and 21.2± 2.3 mmol/l at 24 weeks, while in controls pH equaled 7.35±0.12, HCO3 22.2±1.4 mmol/l, at baseline, and 7.40±0.03, and 22.3±1.8 mmol/l, at 24 weeks, with no significant differences. Dialysis adequacy (urea Kt/V), urine output and dialysis ultrafiltration did not differ between the groups, either at baseline or at study termination. Conclusions: Bicarbonate PD solution appears to be similar to standard fluid in the impact on hydration status and on acid/base balance. Longitudinal studies are needed to assess long-term advantages of these biocompatible solutions.

Opis:: Malnutrition remains one of the major predictors of mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The aim of the study was to evaluate the nutritional status of prevalent PD patients, and to determine the best predictors of outcome among anthropometric and laboratory indices of nutrition. The study included 106 prevalent PD patients from a single university-based unit. Anthropometric assessment at baseline included: body mass, body mass index (BMI), skinfold thickness, lean body mass (LBM), content of body fat (%F), mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC). Laboratory analysis comprised of albumin and total cholesterol. Additionally, each patient underwent a subjective global assessment (SGA). The patients were followed for 36 months. Survival analyses were made with the Kaplan-Meier survival curve and the Cox proportional hazard model. Following SGA, malnutrition was diagnosed in 30 (28%) patients. Importantly, eight of the malnourished patients (27%) were nevertheless overweight or obese. Body weight and BMI showed complete lack of association with the outcome. In Kaplan-Meier analysis low: LBM, MAMC, albumin and cholesterol were significantly related to mortality. Cox analysis revealed that, following adjustment, LBM below median was independently associated with poor outcome (hazard ratio [HR] 3.15, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.17-8.49, p=0.02). Moreover, the lowest quartile of total cholesterol showed independent association with mortality (HR 8.68, CI 2.14-35.21, p<0.01). Malnutrition is prevalent in patients undergoing PD, and overweight/obesity does not preclude its appearance. The most valuable nutritional indices in predicting outcome in this cohort were LBM and total cholesterol concentration.

Opis:: Background. Dietary supplements (DS) are available over the counter, but patients with impaired renal function are specifically at risk for toxicity when consuming certain DS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of DS use in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Material and methods. A cross-sectional, controlled DS use survey (22 questions) was conducted among 180 CKD patients (stage 1-5, dialysis, kidney transplant), with 60 patients without CKD serving as controls. Results. DS use did not differ significantly between subjects with and without CKD, unless the CKD patients were on dialysis. In the CKD group, 20% admitted to use DS regularly and 22% did not take the mat all. In the controls, DS consumption was 17% and 13%, respectively (NS). The DS use was higher among women ascompared to men (89% vs. 70%; p < 0.005), and people living in cities versus those living in the country side (81% vs. 63%; p < 0.05). DS most commonly used were: vitamins, minerals, and herbs. Major indications for DS use included: musculoskeletal issues, general health improvement and prevention of urinary tract infections. Subgroup analyses revealed that dialysis patients were characterized by a significantly higher DS use in comparison to CKD stage 1-5 subjects and renal transplant recipients. The decision to introduce DS was made by the physician in 54% of cases; by a pharmacist in 9% of cases, and by the patients themselves in 37%. Only 21% of patients with CKD, and 27% of subjects without CKD, declared knowledge of any possible side-effects associated with DS (NS). Conclusions. The use of DS among patients with CKD is similar to patients without CKD, with the exception of those on dialysis. Vitamins and minerals were the most commonly reported DS consumed. The knowledge on potential side-effectof DS was limited to approximately one-fourth of those surveyed.

Opis:: Background: Analgesics can be sold following medical prescription, but also as over-the-counter (OTC) medications. In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), their use could potentially be associated with increased risk of side-effects, due to impaired renal elimination. The aim was to evaluate the epidemiology and indications for the use of OTC analgesics, and the knowledge of their side-effects in patients with CKD. Material and methods: A cross-sectional, controlled survey on the use of OTC analgesic drugs was conducted among 180 CKD patients (stage 1-5, dialysis, kidney transplant), compared to 60 controls. Results: The proportion of patients using OTC analgesics on a regular basis was higher in the CKD group, compared to controls (18.9% vs. 10.0%, p<0.02). The major indications included musculoskeletal issues, followed by headaches and other. Subgroup analysis revealed that analgesic use was lowest among transplanted patients, in comparison to CKD stage 1-5, and dialysis subjects (10%, 20%, 26%, respectively, p=0.06). Less than half of CKD patients and controls declared any knowledge on potential side-effects of analgesic drugs (45.6% vs. 40.0%, NS). Conclusions: The use of OTC analgesics among patients with CKD is higher than in subjects without CKD, with the exception of transplanted patients. The knowledge on the potential side-effect of analgesics is limited.

Opis:: Artykuł prezentuje problematykę wpływu istnienia komitetu audytu w badanej jednostce na jakość rewizji finansowej. Autorzy uzasadniają tezę, że istnienie komitetu audytu wydatnie poprawia jakość rewizji. Z jednej strony podnosi wiarygodność jednostki i zmniejsza ryzyko badania, z drugiej zaś, poprzez nadzór nad wyborem biegłego i samym badaniem, wpływa na jakość wykonywanych czynności rewizyjnych. Rozważania są prowadzone na podstawie wyników badań empirycznych przeprowadzonych w Stanach Zjednoczonych, zachodniej Europie i w Polsce, a także o studia literaturowe i doświadczenia praktyczne autorów.
The article analyses the influence of audit committee existence on quality of the external audit. The authors discuss the thesis that the audit committee considerably increases the value of the external audit. Firstly, because it increases the reliability of accounting system and decrease the risk of the audit. Secondly, because the permanent supervision of audit activities and reports positively influence quality of the financial statement revision. The article is based upon the results of research made in USA, western Europe and Poland and also upon literature and authors' personal experiences.

Opis:: The paper analyzes the problem of initial compaction of a non-cohesive soil sample on the example of dry silty sand samples. Two different compaction methodologies were used: I) dynamic compaction - using split Hopkinson pressure bar and II) vibration compaction - using a vibrating shaker. A better result of the compaction process was obtained for dynamic compaction with an initial pressure value of 0.5 bar (small difference in the result - both methods obtained comparable results). The paper also includes a numerical analysis of the calibration of the pneumatic launcher in the Matlab environment on the basis of the system of difference equations. The calibration process was carried out in the initial pressure range from 0.5 to 3.0 bar for three different variants of the barprojectile length: 100 mm, 200 mm and 250 mm and compared with the experimental analysis - the results were consistent.
