Opis:
The optical trapping forces of tightly-focused radially polarized circular partially coherent beams on Rayleigh particles are theoretically investigated. Numerical calculations are performed to study the optical trapping forces on Rayleigh particles for different initial coherent length of the incident circular partially coherent beams. The results show that the magnitude of the gradient force decreases with the reduction of the initial coherent length of the focused radially polarized circular partially coherent beams, while the balanced position (i.e., the position where the optical trapping forces becomes zero) stays constant. Moreover, the focused spot gradually elongates along the optical axis with the reduction of the initial coherent length, and the axial gradient force on Rayleigh particles also decreases gradually with the reduction of the intensity gradient in axial direction. As there exists an spherical aberrant in the focusing optical system, the focal spot in the direction of the optical axis becomes trumpet-shaped, and the optical trapping forces on Rayleigh particles change as well.

Opis:
To promote the application of rubber-cement composites as the main bearing structure and key components in practical engineering under frequent dynamic disturbances, in this work, the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) cyclic impact tests of rubber-cement composite specimens with four different confine modes were carried out in which the impact load increased sequentially. The relationship between average strain rate, ultimate strain and impact times and the relationship between peak stress, damage energy, ultimate strain and incident energy were analyzed. The results showed that the appropriate confine reinforcement treatment can make rubber-cement composite give full play to its deformation ability when it was completely damaged. Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheet and steel cylinder can work together with the rubber-cement composite matrix to resist impact load, which effectively improves the structural strength, damage fracture energy, and cyclic impact resistance of the rubber-cement composite. Finally, based on the effect difference of confine modes, the simplified plane force models of rubber-cement composite specimens with four different confine modes were established, which clearly revealed the completely different impact resistance mechanism of the rubber-cement composites with different constraints under cyclic impact loading.

Objectives To investigate whether postnatal benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) exposure caused the impairments on the process of neurodevelopment and the alteration in the calcium medium in the neonatal rats. Material and Methods Eighty neonatal Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into 5 groups (untreated control group, vehicle group, 0.02 mg/kg, 0.2 mg/kg and 2 mg/kg B(a)P-exposed group). Rats were treated with B(a)P by the intragastric administration from postnatal day (PND) 4 to 25. Morris water maze (MWM) was employed to observe the spatial memory of rats. The activity of calcium adenosine triphosphatase (Ca2+-ATPase), sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (Na+-K+-ATPase) and calcium-magnesium adenosine triphosphatase (Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase) in the hippocampus were detected by commercial kits. Fura-2 pentakis(acetoxymethyl) (Fura-2/AM) probe and reactive oxygen species (ROS) reagent kit were used for measuring the concentration of Ca2+ and ROS in the hippocampus synapse, respectively. Results Rats exposed to B(a)P resulted in the deficits in the spatial memory manifested by the increased escape latency and decreased number of crossing platform and time spent in target quadrant in comparison with the control groups. Benzo(a)pyrene exposure caused the significant decrease in the ATPase activity in the hippocampus and caused Ca2+ overload in the synaptic, besides, the ROS concentration increased significantly which may further induce neurobehavioral impairment of the neonatal rats. Conclusions Our findings suggest that postnatal B(a)P exposure may cause the neurobehavioral impairments in the neonatal rats, which were mediated by the decreased ATPase activity and elevated Ca2+ concentration. In this paper, formulas for aspherical, sphero-cylindrical, toroidal, and ellipsoidal surfaces with astigmatic axes are derived. Based on this, four types of curved surfaces were designed to correct astigmatism with axis, and, subsequently, the lenses were simulated, fabricated, and measured. A total of ten spectacle lenses in two groups were designed. Those in the first group used identical optical parameters. The spherical and cylindrical powers and maximum and minimum edge thicknesses of aspherical, sphero-cylindrical, and ellipsoidal surfaces were compared. The results indicated that the power of the lens constructed using the toroidal surface was more accurate than those of the other three lenses. Moreover, the minimum edge thickness of the toroidal surface was 1.2%, 4.98%, and 4.87% lower than those of the aspherical, sphero-cylindrical, and ellipsoidal surfaces, respectively. The powers and edge thicknesses of toroidal surfaces with different diopters were compared in the second group. The minimum and maximum edge thicknesses were observed to be reduced by 8.97% and 6.05%, respectively, corresponding to the conic constants obtained via ray tracing. The conclusion will be significant for clinical ophthalmology and optical design for the patients with astigmatism.

Motivated by the recent success in describing the spin and orbital spectrum of a spin-orbital chain using a large-N mean-field approximation, we apply the same formalism to the case of a spin chain in the external magnetic field. It occurs that in this case, which corresponds to N=2 in the approximation, the large-N mean-field theory cannot qualitatively reproduce the spin excitation spectra at high magnetic fields, which polarize more than 50% of the spins in the magnetic ground state. This, rather counterintuitively, shows that the physics of a spin chain can under some circumstances be regarded as more complex than the physics of a spin-orbital chain.

Opis:
The safety of explosives is closely related to the stress state of the explosives. Under some stress stimulation, explosives may detonate abnormally. It is of great significance to accurately describe the mechanical response of explosives for the safety evaluation of explosives. The mechanical properties of polymer bonded explosives (PBXs) strongly depend on pressure. In this study, the mechanical behaviour of PBXs under confined conditions was investigated. It was found that the stress-plastic strain response of a PBX under high confining pressures is a combination of the non-linear and linear hardening portions. However, the linear hardening portion has often been neglected in characterizing the mechanical behaviour of a PBX under such pressures. The Karagozian and Case (K&C) model was applied to characterize the mechanical behaviour of PBXs. The numerical results demonstrated that when the confining pressure was high, the K&C model could not adequately match the experimental data due to the limitation of the damage model. Therefore, a new damage model was developed by means of considering intragranular damage and transgranular damage. This modification made it possible to introduce a linear hardening process into the original K&C model. The method proposed to describe the stress-strain results under high confining pressures was to consider the stress-plastic strain curve, including the nonlinear and linear hardening portions. The damage evolution of the original K&C model and a linear hardening model were applied for the nonlinear and linear hardening portions respectively. The influence of the linear hardening model on the damage evolution of the original K&C model was included when describing the nonlinear hardening portion. A comparison between simulation and experiment showed that the modified K&C model could well describe the mechanical response of PBXs under different confining pressures.

Opis:
Manganese is a trace element and a cofactor of many enzymes, so it is essential for physiologic functioning, but it is also a neurotoxin at high doses. Manganism is most often caused by occupational exposure. It is manifested by a myriad of signs and symptoms ranging from the neurasthenia syndrome, such as headache and dizziness, to the Parkinson-like syndrome, depending on the blood manganese levels as well as the duration of exposure. We are reporting a case of manganism using both clinical and occupational hygiene investigation methods. The patient presented the neurasthenia syndrome accompanied by hypertonicity of arm muscles and was diagnosed to have mild chronic manganism. Finally, the patient was discharged from the hospital after the treatment had improved her condition. In China, there are many chronic manga nese cases, partly due to a rapid industrial development with great use of Mn and the low self-protection awareness among the workers and the factories management that cannot catch up with the speed of the economical development. Therefore, factories are responsible for improving the conditions at the workplace.

This paper discusses the urgent need for human interventions in maximizing the promise of blue growth while ensuring sustainability in all its dimensions. It spares no efforts in highlighting the critical nexus between ocean conservation, climate change mitigation and the ecosystem services. The interpretation underscores the threat that unchecked deterioration of marine environment would present for health of the planet and its people. It is evident that the nature-based solutions provide the best options, but the significance of disruptive technologies and innovations cannot be underestimated. However, the decisions pertaining to devising and applying solutions should be informed by scientific reasoning and available evidence. Increasing attention given to blue economy shows the importance of exploring the sustainable solutions by shaping research that helps in identifying the tangible and integrated actions to fast track our progress towards implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

Oleic acid (OA) is widely used in pathology studies of hepatocellular lipid deposition. Identifying the effects of different solvents on OA-induced liver lipid deposition would be beneficial for studies on hepatocytes. We treated BRL 3A cells with OA dissolved in different solvents. After 12 h incubation, cell viability was assessed using MTT assays. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) counts, and the expression level of glucose regulated protein (GRP78), sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP-1C) and fatty acid synthase (FAS) were analyzed. Water, PBS and DMSO were disadvantageous to the dissolution of OA and did not cause an OA-induced response in hepatocytes. In the alcohol+OA-treated cells, the severe ER stress, oxidative stress and cellular fat deposition were significantly increased. BSA promoted cell growth and the cells treated with 1.2% BSA+OA showed a lower grade TG and endoplasmic reticulum stress compared with KOH+OA and alcohol+OA treatments. KOH had no significant influence on BRL 3A cells viability. When treated with OA dissolved in KOH, BRL 3A cells showed a typical hepatocyte damage. KOH was considered the suitable choice for an OA solvent for BRL 3A cells in hepatic lipidosis research.

In the present work, two PU films, TDI-P(E-co-T) and TDI-N-100-P(E-co-T), were prepared. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were composited into the TDI-N-100-P(E-co-T) film for better mechanical properties and antibacterial activities, and resultant PU/AgNPs composite film was systematically characterized and studied. The as-prepared PU/AgNPs composite film exhibits much better antibacterial properties than the traditional PU membrane, exhibiting broader application prospect.

Objectives To establish a practical method for assessing the general metabolic health conditions among different employee groups, this study utilized the total count of metabolic syndrome (MetS) elements as a parameter, and performed a retrospective analysis comparing changes of MetS component count (MSC) of 5 years among day-time work (DW) and day-andnight rotating shift work (RSW) employees. Material and Methods The data of personal histories, physical examinations, blood tests, abdominal sonographic examinations and occupational records were collected from a cohort of workers in an electronics manufacturing company. We first defined the arithmetic mean value of MSC as MSC density (MSCD) for the employee group; then we compared the changes of MSCD over 5 years between DW and RSW workers. Occupational, personal and health records were analyzed for the 1077 workers with an initial mean age of 32.4 years (standard deviation (SD): 6.2 years), including 565 RSW workers (52%). Results The initial MSCDs were 1.26 and 1.12 (p = 0.06) for DW and RSW workers, respectively; after 5 years, the increments of MSCD for DW and RSW workers were 0.10 and 0.39, respectively (p < 0.01). By performing multivariate logistic regression analyses, and comparing with DW co-workers, final results indicated that the workers exposed to RSW have 1.7-fold increased risk of elevated MSCD (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.28–2.25, p < 0.01); and are 38% less likely (adjusted rate ratio (aRR) 0.62, 95% CI: 0.45–0.86, p < 0.01) to attain decreased MSCD. Conclusions These observations demonstrate that changes of MSCD are significantly different between DW and RSW workers, and are increasingly associated with RSW exposure. In conclusion, MSCD can represent the general metabolic health conditions of a given employee group; MSC, MSCD and their transitional changes can be applied as simple and standardized tools for monitoring metabolic health risk profiles when managing employee health, at both the individual and company levels.

In this paper, an optical microscope objective with large numerical number is inserted into a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and this system is adopted to detect the surface morphologies of two ruled transmission gratings with area scale to a micrometer. The object waves transmitting from the gratings interfere with spherical reference wave, and the interferograms constructed are recorded by a high-resolution CCD. The surface maps of the gratings are retrieved from the interferograms, and the results are confirmed by the measurement with an atomic force microscope, with detection errors in nanometer scale. This work provides an optical non-destructive method for precise detection of small-area sophisticated object surfaces with an optical microscope objective.

Submicron- and nano-explosives have attracted growing attention, while the mechanism of how particle size influences the impact sensitivity is not completely understood. In the present work, HMX (octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine) based PBXs (plastic bonded explosives) of three particle size distributions (1-2 and 10-20 μm, and 100-300 nm) and two pressed densities (91%TMD and 79%TMD) were characterized and tested with a range of techniques to determine their mechanical and thermal properties and impact sensitivities. The results demonstrated that with decreased particle size, the mechanical strength as well as the thermal conductivity were dramatically improved, and the impact sensitivity was significant decreased. The structure of impacted samples suggested that the ignition mechanism is dependant on the particle size. Samples with higher density were more sensitive to impact, as the impact force acting on these samples was higher. The correlation between particle size and impact sensitivity is discussed in detail.
