Introduction and aim. The professional values and the care behaviors of surgical nurse’s play an important role in providing quality patient care and increasing patient satisfaction. The aim of this study was evaluated the relationship between the professional values and care behaviors of surgical nurses. Material and methods. This descriptive and correlational study consisted of 245 surgical nurses working in Turkey. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Nurses Professional Values Scale, and the Caring Behaviors Inventory-24. Results. The NPVS total mean score of the surgical nurses was 118.26. The CBI-24 total mean score of the surgical nurses was 5.25. The nurses obtained high mean scores in both the Nurses Professional Values Scale and subscales, and the Caring Behavior Inventory-24 and subscales. A weak, positive and significant relationship was found between the professional values and care behaviors of the surgical nurses (p<0.001). Both the individual and professional characteristics of the surgical nurses affected their perceptions of professional values and care behaviors (p<0.05). Conclusion. The study showed that they had high perceptions of professional values and caring behaviors and adopted at most human dignity from professional values. Personal and organizational activities should be carried out to improve the professional values of surgical nurses and have them internalize care behaviors.

Introduction and aim. Thirst is a significant symptom and stressor among patients in the intensive care unit. The aim of this study is to assess the severity of thirst and associated symptoms experienced by patients in the intensive care unit, and to evaluate the nursing practices related to addressing thirst. Material and methods. This descriptive and correlational study involved a total of 66 patients in the intensive care unit. Severity of thirst experienced by these patients was assessed using a numeric rating scale. The nursing practices related to assessing thirst severity on admission to the unit, on the third day, and on the seventh day were also recorded. Results. Our findings showed a statistically significant increase in the levels of thirst, dry mouth, bad taste and odor in the mouth, as well as sensitivity and dryness in the throat among patients on the seventh day of hospitalization (p<0.05). Among nursing interventions, communication with the patient was the most frequently applied intervention during the seven-day period, with a range of 98.5% to 100%, biochemical control (100%), ventilation of the unit (100%), and temperature regulation (100%) were also frequently applied. Conclusion. The patients had all the symptoms of thirst. The frequency of nursing interventions increased in parallel with the severity of thirst.

Opis:
Introduction and aim. Palliative care is an approach to improve the quality of life of patients and their families facing problems associated with life-threatening illnesses or old age, to manage their pain, distress, and other symptoms, improving their quality of life, and providing psychological support. This study was designed to identify the care practices planned by nurses for the health issues of palliative surgical patients. Material and methods. This is a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study. The data was collected from digital records of the two state hospitals in the Western Black Sea Region of Turkey between January 2019 and January 2020. The research was completed with a total of 391 data of patients undergoing palliative surgery. Frequency and percentage distributions were used in descriptive statistics. Results. The frequency of symptoms observed in patients were determined as cough and sputum (81.8%), dehydration (73.9%), dyspnea (71.9%), fatigue (49.9%), loss of appetite-weight (49.9%), insomnia (44%), pain (37.6%), nausea (29.2%), and constipation (23.8%). The planned nursing diagnoses for these symptoms were identified as risk for falls, imbalanced nutrition, risk for impaired skin integrity, risk for infection, risk for aspiration, deficient knowledge, risk for impaired respiratory function, constipation, ineffective airway clearance, pain, risk for deficient fluid volume, sleep deprivation, impaired gas exchange respectively. Conclusion. This study highlights the insufficient planning of nursing care for the symptoms of palliative surgical patients receiving palliative care in our country. Therefore, it is recommended that palliative care nurses be supported with in-service training on appropriate care planning topics.

Opis:
Introduction and aim. Falls are the second leading cause of unintentional death in the world. The study was conducted to examine the risk of falls and levels of frailty in older adult patients admitted to the emergency department due to fractures, as well as to identify the factors that influence fall risk and frailty levels. Material and methods. This cross-sectional and correlational study conducted with 155 older patients. Data collected by the patient information form, Itaki Fall Risk Scale and Edmonton Frail Scale. Results. Patients diagnosed with fracture in the emergency department had a high risk of falling with a mean score of 9.55±3.84.70.3% of the patients were frail. The one-third (30.3%) had severe frailty. There was a moderate positive correlation between the risk of falling and the mean frailty score of the older adult patients (p<0.001). Conclusion. The study showed that older adults admitted to the emergency department due to falls are at high risk of falling and the majority of them are frail. Early determination of fall risk and frailty levels in the older adults with a history of falling, prevention of falls and fractures due to falls will be beneficial in increasing the quality of life of the older adults

Introduction and aim. Edema and pain may occur in the lower extremities due to the long-term standing work of nursing students and the stress they experience. In this study, the aim was to determine the effect of foot baths applied after clinical practice on foot pain and leg edema in nursing students. Material and methods. This randomized controlled study was carried out with second year nursing students. The intervention group received a foot bath (including immersion in water and massage). No intervention was performed on the control group. The data was collected using a survey form, edema follow-up form, visual analog scale, and foot bath equipment. Results. Edema levels in the right tibia decreased statistically on the 1st and 2nd days after the foot bath compared to the values measured after nurses performed clinical practice, while the edema level in the left tibia decreased significantly in the first and fourth weeks (p<0.05). The right and left foot pain scores in the intervention group increased in the evening of the day after the clinical practice compared to before clinical practice, and pain scores decreased statistically significantly after foot bath (p<0.001). The foot pain scores expressed by the students in the first week increased continuously (p<0.001). Conclusion. The study showed that a foot bath performed after clinical practice were effective for easing foot pain and leg edema.

Opis:
Objectives: This research was conducted as a cross-sectional descriptive study aimed at determining the existence of pain in the musculoskeletal system among office workers and the reasons for it. Material and Methods: The sample consisted of 528 office workers. Collection of data was achieved using a questionnaire prepared by the researchers in line with information from the literature. Results: The male and female office workers most frequently complained of pain in the lower back (55.1%), neck (52.5%) and back (53%). It was seen that out of the variables relating to the work environment, those which had the most significant effect on muscular-skeletal system pain were sitting at the desk for a long time without a break, working sitting on a chair that supported only the lumbar area and the arms, having the computer mouse at a distance from the keyboard, having the head inclined at 45° when working, working holding both forearms above the level of the desk, not taking exercise in daily life, and having a moderate or extremely stressful workplace (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The conclusion has been reached in this study that in order for office workers not to suffer musculoskeletal system pain, it is very important that the working environment should be ergonomically arranged and that various measures should be taken to ensure healthy life behavior. Behçet's disease
Opis:
Purpose: Behçet's disease is a multisystem disease characterized by recurrent oral and genital ulcers, relapsing uveitis, mucocutaneous, articular, gastrointestinal, neurologic, and vascular manifestations. Paraoxonase is believed to play an important role in protection of LDL and HDL particles from oxidation, in antioxidant effect against lipid peroxidation on cellular membranes, and in anti-inflammatory process. Lipid peroxidation and free oxygen radicals have been thought to play a role in pathogenesis of BD. The association of paraoxonase gene polymorphisms with Behçet's Disease in a group of Turkish patients with clinical manifestations and healthy controls has been investigated. Patients and Methods: Paraoxonase (PON-1-L55M) gene polymorphism was investigated in 50 Behcet patients and 50 healthy individuals with a PCR/RFLP method. Results: There were significant differences between patients and the control group in allele frequencies of the PON1 L55M polymorphism (p=0.04). Also, when patients were compared with the control group according to clinical manifestations, this statistical significance was getting sharper. Compared with the PON55 L allele, the M allele was associated with greater than 3.5 fold (OR 3.5, 95% CI 1.3-8.9) increased risk of ocular (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.1-5.3), 2.4 fold joint and 3.1 fold (OR 3.1, 95% CI 1.1-8.4) central nervous system manifestations of BD. Conclusion The PON L55M gene polymorphism seemed to play a role in the pathogenesis of BD.
